I don't think that Our Historian >ever said where they came from. That's the easiest thing to answer, based on what we know now. There are rogue planets all over the cosmos, it seems. Consider 'Oumuamua, which is even shaped like a projectile. (And no, I don't think any intelligence shaped it to be one. I think it got near a star on one of those hyperbolic passes, melted, and was stretched out by the star's gravity before escaping. There's an early Niven story in which the same thing nearly happens to the protagonist; I forget its title but I bet somebody can supply it.) -- Dorothy J.
