Synopsis: Osteoporosis is a systemic skeletal disorder characterized by low bone mass, micro-architectural deterioration of bone tissue leading to bone fragility, and consequent increase in fracture risk. It is the most common reason for a broken bone among the elderly. Bones that commonly break include the vertebrae in the spine, the bones of the forearm, and the hip. Until a broken bone occurs there are typically no symptoms. Bones may weaken to such a degree that a break may occur with minor stress or spontaneously. After the broken bone heals, the person may have chronic pain and a decreased ability to carry out normal activities. (Wikipedia)

With the publication of "Understanding Osteoporosis: An Introduction for Patients and Caregivers", Dr. Naheed Ali offers the non-specialist general read with an interest in the subject cutting-edge tips for sufferers and those who help them, and offers an informed and informative overview of the essentials of treatment, symptoms, risk factors, and outcomes.

Osteoporosis is prevalent among aging women especially, but it can affect anyone as they age. with "Understanding Osteoporosis" Dr. Ali also offers an overview of the disorder and its warning signs and risk factors. He walks his readers through prevention strategies, common symptoms, treatment options, and potential outcomes for sufferers. Keeping caregivers in mind, too, Dr. Ali offers advice for both sufferers and those who love and care for them, to keep them safe.

Critique: While note intended to be a curriculum textbook, but exceptionally well written, organized and presented, "Understanding Osteoporosis: An Introduction for Patients and Caregivers" should be considered essential and informative reading for anyone who is dealing with the medical condition of osteoporosis in themselves, a friend or family member, or who are charged with caregiving responsibilities of patient or client with osteoporosis. While unhesitatingly and unreservedly recommended for personal, professional, community, and academic library Health/Medicine collections, it should be noted for personal reading lists that "Understanding Osteoporosis" is also available in a digital book format (Kindle, $33.00).

Synopsis: With unprecedented global aging, countries around the world ranging from Japan to the United States must undertake all-of-society efforts to maximize the benefits and minimize the burdens of aging populations.

"The Global Roadmap for Healthy Longevity" describes a realistic vision of healthy longevity that could be achieved by 2050. The vision includes full inclusion of people of all ages, regardless of health or functional status, in all aspects of society and societies characterized by social cohesion and equity.

To achieve the vision, "Global Roadmap" (a product of the Commission for a Global Roadmap for Healthy Longevity -- National Academy of Medicine) recommends changes that need to be made to health systems, social infrastructure, physical environments, education, work, and retirement. In some cases, the recommended changes benefit older people most directly, but when older people thrive, people of all ages benefit.

If taken up, the recommendations of this report can support individuals of all ages in all corners of the globe to live long, meaningful, and purpose-driven lives by 2050

Critique: An aging population is a critically important and global issue that affects everything for social norms, political stability, economics, needed infrastructure, and so much more, the "The Global Roadmap for Healthy Longevity" is highly recommended for personal, professional, community, governmental, and academic library Health Policy/Public Health collections and deserves as wide a readership as possible, especially for students, academia, governmental policy makers, political activists, and non-specialist general readers with an interest in the subject.
