I'm a huge fan of the background eraser in the photo editor. I like to apply an offset shadow to products when I'm placing them a new images after erasing their background. Sometimes the shadow feature just disappears so I can't add a shadow to the image that I've just erased the background on. It seems completely random and I can't figure it out. Has this happened to anybody else? How do you get it back?

Shotwell has a single photo view that allows you to do most if not all of what you're asking. Shotwell, of course, has the advantage that it's included by default in modern Ubuntu so there's nothing to install.


To access the Shotwell viewer without separately launching the main Shotwell app, right click the photo and from the Open With menu select Shotwell Photo Viewer:






(You can make the Shotwell viewer the default program to open photos by selecting Properties from the right click menu and messing around in the Open With tab there.)


Whereas usually Shotwell is nondestructive (in the sense that any manipulations you perform on photos are only saved to a photo file if you export it), hitting save from the viewer does indeed write the changes to the file.


When making a new listing on desk top. directly on the eBay platform. You can whiten the background but after saving go to crop the photo down to highlight product the button shows crop outline. However it in not adjustable and does not work.


Same Problem here. I upload high res photos from my phone and I can only crop a sliver of the image. It acts like I have low res photos. Some have worked ok but now all the images I took last night I cannot crop the way I would like. Please fix.


I use Google Photos to host (free & secure "https") all my images. If you do all your edits (cropping / color / brightness / contrast) in google photos, way more control and editing capabilities, then you can copy the URL on that image and paste it into the E-Bay listing tool. This will keep the original size so when you see an image on E-Bay and hover over it or click on it, then it will show the larger size image. I haven't had much success using the E-Bay photo edit tool.


I do have options, like the free Adobe Photoshop Express, and my cameras native software, or Capture One express for my camera brand. While these do teh basic photo development very well, the photo editing features are not extensive, typically I'd have to also send the initial image from these apps to darktable for any further editing


Over the last few weeks, since I made this request, I spent more time reviewing images with the various raw processors I have installed, darktable, Capture One for Sony, Sony;s own Imaging Edge app for Windows, Adobe Photoshop Express, and Filmulator. Then one night, by accident pretty exhausted, and quite frustrated, I stumbled upon someone who is obviously a professional photographer on Youtube, who was displaying pretty remarkable images via darktable. I do not think darktable is his main app, cos he clearly also uses many other photo development apps, such as the usual suspects from Adobe.


One thing that began to sink in was me appreciating that for professional photos, they have lighting sorted, using either good lights on location, or flash, They do not mess with such things, so their images right from raw, already contain the contrast that would make them stand out, with very little increase in contrast from the raw, which is what all raw processing apps, add.


With that in mind, I eventually found a way, after much review of the darktable filmic-rgb module, predominantly based around enabling its middle luminance slider, which allowed me to adjust for the kind of low contrast from poor lighting scenarios that is the bane of non-professional photography like mine. From my research, I found that most apps, by default, in whatever photo science they use, have excellent settings that optimise both amateur and professionally lighted photos. With darktable, the default settings in the advised raw processor which is filmic-rgb, leave non professionally lighted scenes, too dark.


I also found an experimental module known as sigmoid, which complements filmic, and with a combination of the two, I have been consistently able to arrive at a set of default presets for both of these modules, which serve as acceptable starting points for image development. For any really problematic images, which I still want to look natural, I may prefer to use another editor like Capture One, rather than struggle in vain in darktable. Like I said earlier, my opinion is the key module in darktable - filmic-rgb, is expecting images shot in professional lighting scenarios. And I can appreciate this cos the developer of this module is a long time professional who has been associated with photography for ages.

I am in a much better place with darktable, and with the main issue fixed, I find that I make very few adjustments, once my presets in filmic are applied, and yes I also use presets for the few other modules I use regularly, where such presets may apply to most images. So photo development is so much faster.


Certain aspects of the images are some of the most authentic, I have ever seen on any raw photo development app. The colours are spectacular. With only one exception. It requires images that are definitely cautious about overexposure. But I could see that with manual adjustment of zones, there may be a way forward.


I came into my interest in photography, from the audio world, where for 25 years, we have gotten used to being able to mix and match audio processors, implemented as plugins, that enable you to have a huge choice of all kinds of audio processing, and you decide the chain of the audio path through these processors.


In photo processing, each pipeline image processor (Adobe, darktable, etc, etc,) is justifiably protective about their way of thinking. And developers of image processing tools for these apps, belong to one camp or another, not common to see many of the same tools, with identical code, available in more than one app. Now this is pretty ridiculous, cos underneath the covers, many of them share the common use of the same open source libraries, for performing basic functions like opening and decoding the contents of a raw file, or creating a jpeg/tiff output. So especially in open source, they benefit from easy availability of some core code components, which are reused across multiple apps, but it has not occurred that - if only the apps like lightzone and darktable could also become "platforms" that enable easy extension and inclusion of imaging plugins, we'd have a much better ecosystem.


In photography you have a parallel, interchangeable lenses, and with adapters you can also repurpose many lenses to camera mounts for which they were not intended. So you have businesses like Tamron, who do not make camera bodies, and focus only on lenses.


My lesson from photography, the world is such a wonderful place, when I look at my photos and see details which I could never have had the time to observe in the original scene. Digital photography, from what I can see has done a decent job of the capture, cos when I use a diligent raw processor, all the awesome detail and colors in the shot are displayed, and I wonder its amazing how much most people are not seeing in their images, cos the raw processors and process used is sub par, and they do not know it. Guess ignorance is bliss, as they say in English. You cannot lust after what you have never experienced or become aware of its existence.


I have a strong hunch that in the archives of our photography are amazing images, which could be reprocessed with much better raw processing, that improves even further, as the technology advances. And a lot of this is not rocket science, we just need tools that give us a bit of flexibility to mix and merge, what already exists.
