Does anyone know how I can export my family tree and attached documents and photos from Ancestry? I want to stop paying their membership but don't want to lose everything. It would also be nice to back everything up somewhere other than their site now that they are owned by a private equity fund.

After you provide a saliva sample, 23andMe uses genotyping to analyze your DNA. This means we look at specific locations in your genome that are known to differ between people. We then turn those results into personalized genetic reports on everything from ancestry composition to traits to genetic health risks. Note that genotyping is different from DNA sequencing, which looks at every letter in a particular stretch of DNA.

There are many benefits of DNA testing, including finding relatives, learning whether you have genetic variants you could pass onto your children, and receiving personalized insights into your health and ancestry. 23andMe Health + Ancestry Service offers 150+ DNA reports that do just that. In addition to taking greater control of your own health and digging deeper into your ancestry, you can also opt in to participate in research that could help fuel scientific discoveries that benefit the larger community.

Australia is one of the most multicultural countries in the world. Its settlement started with convicts, sent from England as punishment. Others have fled here seeking refuge, or with the desire to start a new life. We are a melting pot of genes, cultures, and faiths.

A few years after arriving in Australia, James changed his surname from Kimmerley to Kimmorley. Now, every Kimmorley in the world is not only a direct descendant of James, but is also is a distant relative in some way.

Hello! I'm fairly new to genealogy. During COVID, my local library made it possible to access Ancestry Canada from home. Unfortunately, I only discovered this recently, and that arrangement ends after this month. Beginning in June, access is only possible at the physical library, which means competing for access to their limited bank of computers, working under a time cap, and so forth. So then I considered getting an Ancestry subscription ... and was shocked to learn just how expensive it is!

Many people use the database on their computer as the master file, upload that to ancestry for hints with or without media but manually add any new finds to the computer file not to ancestry. Then you can sync up and not mess up your master file. It sounds like you worked mainly in the ancestry website and only recently started using a genealogy program on your computer which may change how best to work.

Where did you buy RM7 from? Under your name I can see registrations for RM7 and RM8 but not the purchase through us. You can email sales rootsmagic.com to have them check if you were entitled to a free upgrade to RM8.

I converted my archived Tree to RM8 format - 308 media items all linked correctly.

Uploaded it to Ancestry - everything looked great, even the profile pictures were in place.

Downloaded it back to RM8.

And there are 250 media items.

Though the user created items (such as photographs) are all there now.

I see several posts going back to abt. 2013 reporting incompatibility of Safari with the app Ancestry. I had no problems with Ancestry until this last year, when it would have problems saving records, albeit intermittently. Numerous calls to Ancestry ended in frustration with their stock answer: clear your cache and try another browser. I was able to live with this on/off situation until about 3-4 weeks ago, when records on Ancestry suddenly started to display improperly. To be specific, I would bring up a record, the information for which had been transcribed, and there would be a thumbnail image of the basic record itself with a tab saying "click to view full record". This indeed would bring up the record, but would display only the top-left 1/8 of the page - whether it be a will, or a whatever document, rendering it useless. This phenomenon started about the same time I updated Mac OS to 10.15.5. Am running Safari 13.1.1. I don't recall when Safari was last updated. Whether this is pure coincidence or that Apple has now made some change that further exacerbates the problem with Ancestry, I don't know. How does one get to Apple to ask that question? In any case, I get no help from Ancestry - same story. So in desperation, as I have a countless number of hours invested in a massive family tree on Ancestry, I bit the bullet and downloaded Firefox. It runs slow vs. Safari on this app, but at least it seems to work, and I no longer have the problem with the display of partial pages. I have not tried Google Chrome, which is another browser that Ancestry recommends. I bought a Mac to try to live an Apple life!

Kristin, you are absolutely right. I know because my wife is a DAR and a genealogy enthusiast who frequently uses ancestor.com. I am doing what I teach my students all good researchers do, searching for examples that complicate explanations, in this case the one that Ryan has so clearly articulated. Consider the following, at this point entirely hypothetical case. A non-Native American child is captured and brought up Native American. From the usual anthropological perspective, she becomes Native American. Then, however, she marries another non-Native American and for her descendants she is their only direct lineal connection with her Native American identity. Is this connection sufficient for them to be counted as members of a Native American tribe? And does the answer vary from one tribe to another?

Ancestry and Newspapers. com offer some wonderful integration which makes saving an article to the Ancestry tree very efficient. However the quality of the document saved appears to be compromised. For example I attached a newspaper.com clipping to the Ancestry tree and then downloaded it from Ancestry. It was a 77K JPG file and very low resolution. When I downloaded it from newspapers.com to my hard drive it was 270K. Both were readable but the 270K was much clearer.

Family Tree Maker Sync makes this article obsolete. FTM downloads all media and source data from these linked records while you have a subscription. Then you can discontinue your paid subscription if you wish and you can still access these items on your computer.

I use ancestry uk, when saving records i use snipping tool found in start programs in windows (windows 7) for me currently then save them to a folder for that particular surname. after i have saved it i can then zoom in and snip out the relevant section i want for example on a census the family i am looking for.

A week ago, I contacted someone on Ancestry that shared my personal photos from Find A Grave and uploaded them to Ancestry without proper attribution. He did apologize and added credit where credit was due upon my contacting him. I was a little surprised that this incident came about from someone who has been a genealogist for 15 years!

I have a question. I notice that more and more people are downloading and re-uploading documentation to their trees, which puts them as the original submitters with no source citations attached. I understand that many members feel that they are paying for the documentation by way of subscription, however, I feel it is still right/proper to add a source citation so that others know from whence you have originally found the documentation.

While I do download the majority of records I add to my tree, there have been those moments when winding down for the night or feeling rushed have resulted in no downloads. Phew! You truly have lifted a huge weight from my shoulders.

Researchers share with others out of a courtesy and in return they deserve the right to have their information shared responsibly. If not then many tree owners will delete their trees or make them private because others were stealing their photos then resubmitting them under a new submitter. I know several people who have done this. This is a disadvantage for those who are serious about their research and it can be blamed on the childish attitude of others who think everything should be free.

I never understood how Ancestry could claim ownership for something they never created. The census records are not the property of Ancestry because they are still available on government websites and basically in the public domain. Ancestry just wants to own everything.

Good article. I do like ancestry.com but I tell people to be careful with their recurring billing practices, and to take a screen grab or download any content you get from them while subscribed, otherwise you may come back and find it locked off.

I have always downloaded the documents from ancestry, and then renamed them in the form 1876census_Williamjones family , and filed them in the Jones-William folder. But I do wonder if the name that they have when downloaded has any relevance that I might find useful in the future?

I have tried to deal with Ancestry and always find they want more and more money for everything. Also, I have gone on genealogy sites thinking they are free and they turn out to be owned by Ancestry. I have given up on dealing with them to get any kind of fair priced help with my genealogy. By the way, you ask how Christian is that, I believe they think Jesus is an angel not the Son of God. So technically, they are not Christian.

If you belong to a library in your city, you can get a lot of free help with genealogy like Heritage Quest. You just need a library card and they will show you how to download it. That site can lead you to other more

 reasonable Family Tree sites. Bea

Actually, by the end of 2016 things should be BETTER. Previously there was no way to access both Ancestry and Family Search from one program. RootsMagic 7 can import FULL FTM 2014 trees, including images. And it STILL can access Family Search.
