One summer night 70 years ago, a wealthy oil man was snatched from his Oklahoma City home by 'Machine Gun' Kelly and his gang. Charles Urschel was released after the ransom was paid, but the arrest of suspects and their swift trial was the death knell for the nation's 'gangster era' and set the stage for the rise of J. Edgar Hoover.


AS THEY often did on a sultry summer night, Charles and Berenice Urschel were enjoying a game of bridge with another couple on the screened-in porch of their Heritage Hills home near downtown Oklahoma City.


Threatening letters arrived at the Urschel home and in the judge's chambers. Melodramatic outcries in the courtroom were commonplace, as was the drama of Kathryn Kelly, whom Hamilton defined in his book as a "cunning, shrewd criminal-actress," even after her arrest.


Federal authorities scrambled to get the nonsequential cash together and yet record all the serial numbers. Earnest Earl "E.E." Kirkpatrick traveled to a Kansas City hotel as instructed with the money. While handing over the ransom, he was told Urschel would be home in 12 hours.


It actually took far longer for Urschel to arrive home. The kidnappers had to count the money and ensure it wasn't marked. A debate also ensued on whether to kill Urschel. The female kidnapper argued that Urschel would be better off dead.


Meanwhile, threatening letters swirled back and forth. Undaunted, Urschel testified brilliantly against his captors in a courthouse clamped down by officers carrying machine guns, sawed-off shotguns and revolvers.


Logan had bought the home for $6.55 million five years ago and after renovations was looking to sell the 14 bedroom 30,000 square feet property for $8.5 million.
