Hi. After 27years I would like to come back to modeling.

After priming, spray painting 3D printed models is a surprisingly quick pro=
cess (with the right technique). For a glossy finish, you must build up thi=
n layers of even paint in multiple coats over a pretreated surface. Thin co=
ats allow under painted layers to show through, creating a rich, deep color=
. To spray thin coats, hold the paint can nozzle very close to the model an=
d move quickly. Rotate the model to keep coats even.

Primer is a special type of paint that adheres strongly to the part and pro=
vides a uniform surface for paint to bond with. Different primers have diff=
erent uses. A spray-on primer is the best way to paint your printed parts b=
ecause it quickly covers a surface with an even coating. Brush-on primers a=
re available, but they are tricky to work with and better for fine touch up=
s. For best results, choose a primer and paint that are plastic compatible =
and from the same brand. We like Krylon and Montana (though both are thick =
formulas), but nothing really compares to Tamiya brand model paint - it goe=
s on extremely thinly and evenly, preserving delicate surface details.

This simple trick will save you grief in the spray booth (we were excited w=
hen we saw this technique in a modelmaking how-to video by Adam Savage). By=
 mounting your 3D print on a dowel (often you can use a preexisting hole in=
 the part), you can quickly maneuver while spraying, allowing you to get to=
 all sides and into the nooks and crannies of the part without creating any=
 fingerprints. When you want to add an even coat to all sides of your model=
, this is pretty essential. We recommend ordering a variety of size of dowe=
ls. To minimize the hole size on a part, start with a small size and work y=
our way up until the model feels firmly seated. Drill a corresponding hole =
in a block of wood or MDF and insert the part with the dowel - now you can =
keep the model hands free while spraying.

In May 2001 I wrote a brief preview on the Protar's 1/12 Alfa Romeo 179. Th=
is wonderful Formula One was one of the few cars in modern F1 history which=
 chassis and engine were the same brand. Is this model really difficult? Th=
is is the key question for this model, and the answer is NO. If it were a T=
amiya model, that is to say the same matrix but injected with Tamiya plasti=
c and having the quality control of this huge Japanese company, I would say=
 that this is one of the most delicious models I have ever built. Unfortuna=
tely, it has some flaws, mainly due to its poor quality than to the work of=
 the Protar craftsmen.

ast decade. Thanks to Tamiya we can have a model of it, both were the reaso=
ns why I decided to build it trying to get the most detailed model I could =
, taking advantage of the fact that as it was a mass production model, it w=
ould be possible for me to get a lot of references. Not only I built and su=
perdetailed the model, but also made a slightly and own customized version,=
 a real Panigale, as I would like to have. The aim of this article, is to s=
how with pictures and their comments the work accomplished as a guide and t=
o give ideas of the details that can be added or showing in some cases how =
to do the different tasks.

Advanced techniques: Building the P-51D Mustang "Lt Col John Myers" Petie 3=
rd Dragon 1/32 scale The infamous Dragon P-51D in 1/32. This model was star=
ted before Tamiya announced their kit, and I have to admit that during this=
 build I did consider scrapping it more than once. In the end, I am very gl=
ad I did not. Despite the challenges and limitations of this kit, I am very=
 happy (and proud) of the end result.

A plastic model is a plastic scale model manufactured as a kit, primarily a=
ssembled by hobbyists, and intended for static display. A plastic model kit=
 depicts various subjects, with a majority depicting military and civilian =
vehicles. A kit varies in difficulty, ranging from a "snap-together" model =
that assembles straight from the box, to a kit that requires special tools,=
 paints, and cements.

The most popular subjects of plastic models by far are vehicles such as air=
craft, ships, automobiles, and armored vehicles such as tanks. The majority=
 of models depict military vehicles,[citation needed] due to the wider vari=
ety of form and historical context compared to civilian vehicles. Other sub=
jects include science fiction vehicles and robots (most famously from the G=
undam series), real spacecraft, buildings, animals, human figures, and char=
acters from motion pictures. While military, ship, and aircraft modelers pr=
ize accuracy above all, modelers of automobiles and science-fiction themes =
may attempt to duplicate an existing subject, or may depict a completely im=
aginary subject. The creation of custom automobile models is related to the=
 creation of actual custom cars and often an individual may have an interes=
t in both, although the cost of customizing a real car is obviously enormou=
sly greater than that of customizing a model.

The first plastic models were injection molded in cellulose acetate (e.g. F=
rog Penguin and Varney Trains), but currently most plastic models are injec=
tion-molded in polystyrene, and the parts are glued together, usually with =
a plastic solvent-based adhesive, although experienced modelers may also us=
e epoxy, cyanoacrylate, and white glue where their particular properties wo=
uld be advantageous. While often omitted by novice modellers, specially for=
mulated paint is sold for application to plastic models. Complex markings s=
uch as aircraft insignia or automobile body decorative details and model id=
entification badges are typically provided with kits as screen-printed wate=
r-slide decals.

Recently, models requiring less skill, time, and/or effort have been market=
ed, targeted to younger or less skilled modelers as well as those who just =
wish to reduce the time and effort required to complete a model. One such t=
rend has been to offer a fully detailed kit requiring normal assembly and g=
luing, but eliminate the often frustrating task of painting the kit by mold=
ing it out of colored plastic, or by supplying it prepainted and with decal=
s applied. Often these kits are identical to another kit supplied in normal=
 white or gray plastic except for the colored plastic or the prepainting, t=
hus eliminating the large expense of creating another set of molds.

Almost all plastic models are designed in a well-established scale. Each ty=
pe of subject has one or more common scales, though they differ from one to=
 the other. The general aim is to allow the finished model to be of a reaso=
nable size, while maintaining consistency across models for collections. Th=
e following are the most common scales for popular subjects:

The first plastic models were manufactured at the end of 1936 by Frog in th=
e UK, with a range of 1/72nd scale model kits called 'Penguin'. In the late=
 1940s several American companies such as Hawk, Varney, Empire, Renwal and =
Lindberg began to produce plastic models. Many manufacturers began producti=
on in the 1950s and gained ascendancy in the 1960s such as Aurora, Revell, =
AMT, and Monogram in America, Airfix in UK and Heller SA in France. Other m=
anufacturers included; Matchbox (UK), Italeri, ESCI, (both Italian) Novo ex=
-Frog moulds (former Soviet Union), and Fujimi, Nichimo and Bandai (Japan).
