F1 2009 is a video game based on the 2009 season of the Formula One motor r=
acing series.[2][3] It was released on the Wii and PlayStation Portable[4][=
5] in 2009 on 16 November in North America, 19 November in the PAL region a=
nd 20 November in the United Kingdom. The game was also released on iOS on =
14 December for 6.99.[1] The PlayStation Portable version was also availabl=
e as a download from the PlayStation Store from 16 November.[1]

F1 2009 features all the circuits that are on the 2009 calendar including t=
he Marina Bay Street Circuit for night racing and the new Yas Marina Circui=
t. The game only features the 20 drivers that started the 2009 Formula One =
season, and does not include the driver changes that were made during the s=
eason.[11] There are 15 driver aids each switchable on and off for first ti=
me and experienced players, and in the multiplayer version, the level of he=
lp changes according to the player's skill, by using a "Fair Play" system.[=
12][13] It features slick tyres,[5] as well as the newly introduced KERS co=
ncept that functions like a turbo boost, although the game has the feature =
on all the cars, not just the few that actually used it in the motor racing=
 series.[11] There are several different gameplay modes: Quick Race, where =
players can choose from a multitude of options, from driver and track to da=
mage and weather, Time Trial, where players compete to set the fastest lap =
possible by tuning car setups, a two-player split-screen mode on the Wii, a=
nd wireless multiplayer option on the PSP for up to four players.[11][14] T=
he game also offers the choices of playing through a whole Championship sea=
son, or taking part in a Grand Prix weekend. It includes the possibility of=
 participating in all the practice sessions, qualifying and the race.[11][1=
5] A career mode, involving three seasons of the Formula One World Champion=
ship, is also included.[11] The game features technical settings for the pl=
ayer to change if desired, including aerodynamics, car balance, gear settin=
gs and suspension settings, wheel geometry, tyre compound and pressures, su=
spension spring rates, individual gear ratios, ride height and wing adjustm=
ents.[11] About 70 smaller mini-game style challenges in "Challenge Mode" a=
re also included.[11]

The game features all the drivers and tracks from the 2009 season, but does=
 not represent the replacement drivers that featured in the real F1 season,=
 therefore Luca Badoer, Romain Grosjean, Kamui Kobayashi, Jaime Alguersuari=
 and Vitantonio Liuzzi are not featured, although Giancarlo Fisichella who =
replaced Luca Badoer (substituting for the injured Felipe Massa) at Ferrari=
 is featured in the Force India team (although he had spent over half of th=
e season driving for Force India anyway).

F1 2009 received generally mixed reviews from game critics, for both Wii an=
d PlayStation Portable versions. The graphics of the game were heavily crit=
icised by reviewers: IGN said that the textures were "murky" and the models=
 "half-hearted",[10] while the Official Nintendo Magazine said that "visual=
ly it's a dog's dinner".[21] GameZone continued the theme, saying that "the=
 graphics... are super plain and are often ugly", and also commenting that =
the game "looks like it should have been released for the PSone".[19] GameS=
pot said that the physics were "not up to scratch", also commenting that "y=
our car will bounce off walls and other vehicles with little regard for wha=
t would happen in the real world".[16] The AI was singled out as a failure =
of the game, with IGN calling it "underwhelming", while Eurogamer said that=
 the computer-controlled cars followed the racing line "too rigidly", comme=
nting that "they appear just as likely to run into your gearbox as attempt =
to overtake you".[11] The fact that the game contained only the 20 drivers =
that started the 2009 Formula One season, and did not take into account the=
 driver changes that happened during the season, was another complaint.[11]=
[21] The sound was also criticised, with GameSpot calling it "uniformly poo=
r".[23][16][19][10]

Eurogamer summarised by saying: "This may not be the revolution the Formula=
 1 subgenre has been waiting for, but you're not likely to find many Wii ow=
ners complaining".[11] GameSpot summarised the game by saying: "If you're l=
ooking for an arcade-style racer with a Formula 1 badge, then F1 2009 may f=
it the bill and is likely to keep you busy for quite some time. Unfortunate=
ly, if you're looking for a game that captures the essence and challenge of=
 the pinnacle of motorsport, you're going to be disappointed".[16] GameZone=
 recommended that customers play the game before they bought it,[19] while =
IGN said that "for fans of the sport deprived of an F1 game for so many yea=
rs this does just enough to satiate the thirst".[10] VideoGamer.com looked =
forward to the game's sequel, F1 2010, to be released on PlayStation 3, Xbo=
x 360 and PC, stating that "there's undoubtedly something better coming nex=
t year, on platforms that can do the sport justice".[23] VideoGamer.com sum=
marised the general consensus: "This is a perfectly competent racer, one of=
 the best on the Wii, but it's not a classic by any stretch of the imaginat=
ion".[23]

This Codemasters effort is everything I feared it would be. Essentially a m=
oving, interactive low resolution picture of the 2009 F1 season. I struggle=
 to even call it a game. Absolute rubbish waste of the F1 license.

Just took delivery of F1 2009 on the Wii. Great game. OK not the best graph=
ics but it is a Wii. You CAN tweek all the settings, wing angles, toe in, w=
heel cambers, gear ratios etc. My only real gripe is that all the cars seam=
 to have KERS.

It's not really a realistic game seeing that every car has kers wich kinda =
isnt the case in the real 2009 season, wich kinda defeats the purpose of no=
t equiping it in real life because of some of the disadvantages. So if you =
dont use kers, like i do, you are kinda in a disadvantage. The handling is,=
 as said before, not very realistic, but loads of fun. It can be hard to ad=
apt to the handling if you are used to race sims, as I am, but once you get=
 the hang of it its great fun. It's also great that the AI drivers finish i=
n believable positions.
