Pangolins are a source of food and medicine in parts of Asia and Africa. So=
me believe that their scales can help cure ailments from hysteria to low la=
ctation of a young mother. Because of this, the cute pangolin has been hunt=
ed to near extinction and governments around the world instituted an intern=
ational ban on their trade in 2016. Despite this ban, trade in pangolin sca=
les and meat continues to grow due to criminal networks facilitating intern=
ational smuggling operations.

Fortunately, live pangolins have started to gain some fans and advocates, t=
hanks to spreading information online, and major news outlets running artic=
les about them. Pangolin trading has been outlawed worldwide by the U.N., a=
nd conservation efforts and awareness campaigns (including burning massive =
collections of confiscated scales and skins, not unlike ivory burnings) are=
 taking place in countries around the world. While pangolins may not be as =
charismatic and endearing as elephants, rhinos, tigers, and the like, they =
are pretty darn cute, which is always helpful for gaining attention and sym=
pathy.
