I've thought about this a lot. I think what makes books so powerful at 
changing minds and people is that the images in them are created by our 
own brains. Unlike when we watch a movie or TV show, where the images 
are shown to us passively. When our minds have to build the images from 
scratch I think it helps build empathy. I read an article about fiction 
specifically and empathy, I will try to find it for you.
