NY Times,

"Spokane Wildfires Destroy Hundreds of Buildings as Thousands Evacuate
Firefighters were hopeful that improving weather conditions in
Washington state could help efforts to contain the blaze, which
officials described as the largest natural disaster in the history of
Spokane."

That is county, not city, but still populous. It hits close to home
for me because I went to grade school there. 1st through 7th. That
area always was very dry, like eastern oregon and calif. The best
vegetation you could get there was some scattered scrub pine. How
could a widespread fire burn there?
