The whole world is short staffed be kind to those that have showed up.

"So, I was out running errands today and ended up placing a pickup order
at the Marlow Road Safeway because the three Safeway locations closer to
me didn’t have everything I needed.

Before leaving the Kaiser Permanente area on Bicentennial, I used the
app to let the store know I was on my way. When I arrived, I entered my
parking-space number—and waited. And waited some more.

Eventually, the app recognized that I had been waiting unusually long
and gave me the option to contact the store. While I was waiting to be
connected, I spotted the familiar pickup cart rolling outside with its
bins. I showed the employee my order code, and we started talking.

It turned out that this person was the **interim store manager**,
currently commuting all the way from Clear Lake (if memory serves
correct) to manage the Marlow Road location.

That conversation reminded me of something important.

I frequently see people on Nextdoor complaining about customer service
at Safeway, Starbucks and other local businesses. Sometimes those
concerns are completely valid—but please direct them to someone who
actually has the authority to address them.

The barista taking your order did not decide how many employees would be
scheduled or hired.

The grocery employee bringing your order outside did not design the app,
determine staffing levels or create corporate policy.

Frontline employees are usually doing their best to carry out decisions
made far above their pay grade—often while working short-staffed and
absorbing the frustration of customers all day.

I don’t know the circumstances that led Marlow Road Safeway to need an
interim manager from Clear Lake. However, if this transition ultimately
improves employee morale, store operations and service to the community,
perhaps we can extend the team a little patience while they adjust.

By all means, hold businesses accountable—but take complaints to
corporate leadership, where the decisions are actually being made.
