From the beginning I have not heard about widespread desertification. I did hear when it became clear that the phrase "global warming" was giving the people the wrong impression. That would have been maybe 10 years ago or so. So, it was decided to call it climate change which is more accurate predicting wetter dry places and drier wet places among various other effects. That has been the story for a long time.
