Squirrels are rats with bushy tails. The teeth of rats and squirrels grow continuously. They chew on pretty much everything to keep their teeth from growing too long. I had squirrels chew off the lead covering my plumbing vent pipes, causing leaks in my upstairs bedroom and bathroom. I have controlled their activity on my house somewhat by trimming trees back. Trapping and relocating the squirrels has helped. That is a continuous process. Pretty much every morning I will find small branches the squirrels have gnawed off my trees on the ground.

My neighbor who was content to let nature run wild had to replace all the trim and siding on his house.
