May Day: Some SF businesses staying open despite calls for economic blackout

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- The drinks will still be flowing on Friday at
many bars across San Francisco despite calls for an economic blackout on
May Day in support of workers' rights and in protest of the Trump
administration. 

It's anticipated to be the largest national day of action since the No
Kings rallies in January but this time around, some businesses aren't on
board. 

"I think we're all a pretty politically conscious group of people, and
we didn't feel comfortable staying open, but this time, I think it just,
you know, it's just like we can't keep doing it," I think a lot of
people can't afford to be out of work on a Friday," said Joanna Lioce,
with Vesuvio Cafe. 

Daniel Macchiarini also shut down his North Beach business for No Kings
Day, but won't for May Day. 

"I'm not opposed to those businesses that want to protest, but our
culture has always supported May Day and International Workers' Day, and
the idea of closing seems to be shutting off to everyone who might want
to come in here and experience our art," said Macchiarini. Still, there
are plenty of businesses in the Bay taking part in the May Day blackout.
Arizmendi Bakery with locations in San Francisco and the East Bay will
be closing its doors, as will the Oakland Museum of California. 

In San Francisco's Chinatown, Ed Sui is closing his travel agency for at
least most of the day. 

"I fully support the No Kings, and believe strongly about closing
tomorrow," said Sui, who is also the president of the Chinatown
Merchants Association, noting the majority of businesses can't afford to
close. 

"In Chinatown, especially, it's mom-and-pop shops mostly, and they
really need the business, especially on a Friday and over the weekend.
They still consider about the politics, but their business is more
important," Sui added.
