FCC Drops Private/Network Ownership Percentage Rule

The Federal Communications Commission voted Thursday to
eliminate the long-standing 39% national television ownership
cap, delivering a major victory to the broadcast TV industry
while opening the door to sweeping media consolidation — and
an almost certain court fight over whether the FCC has the
legal authority to act without Congress.

Conservatives — who have long opposed media concentration —
were surprised that this was the first major policy move
of the President Donald Trump-controlled FCC under Chairman
Brendan Carr.

The commission voted 2-1, with Republican Carr and Commissioner
Olivia Trusty supporting the change and Democrat Commissioner
Anna Gomez dissenting.

The FCC will replace the fixed nationwide ceiling with
case-by-case reviews of proposed station acquisitions.

Eliminating the cap has long been an objective of major
television station groups
