CAD for home projects

All,

I use Linux, and need a tool that runs on Linux, low cost, and is 
appropriate for projects like book case, planter, storage cabinets, etc. 
Basically, there seems to be 2D CAD and 3D CAD.  Which would be most 
appropriate to use (and learn)?
