An 11-year-old child was stabbed to death by his mother at a hotel in
Santa Ana on Wednesday, March 19, police said.

At around 9 a.m., the boy was stabbed in a room at the La Quinta Inn on
Hotel Terrace, said Officer Natalie Garcia, a Santa Ana Police Department
spokesperson.

The 48-year-old woman then called police and confessed to killing her son,
police said.

The motive was unclear.

Authorities found the boy suffering from multiple stab wounds in bed, and
declared him dead at the scene. Authorities did not immediately release
his name.

Police found a knife at the scene that is believed to be the weapon used
in the attack.

The mother, whose name had not been released yet, was in custody at a
local hospital and was reported to be stable. The woman had ingested a
large amount of over-the-counter pills, Garcia said. Her last known
residence was in Irvine.

The mother had reportedly been checking in and out of the hotel multiple
times over the last two weeks, Garcia said. It was not immediately clear
why.

Alyssah Witherell, 23, was staying in the hotel, a floor below where
police say the stabbing occurred.

“We heard some banging and didn’t think that was anything abnormal,”
Witherell said. “Kids yell, and I didn’t think anything of it, and I
really wish I would have.”

Witherell said the hotel is a known spot for some people staying up to a
month. Many families stay at the hotel, she said, and the only cameras she
was aware of are in the lobby.

“They have so many children that stay here,” Witherell said.

Wednesday afternoon, Santa Ana police were parked around the 181-room
hotel and the building remained open.

A memorial was erected outside the hotel later in the day. Prayer candles
and a red balloon were placed at the base of a white cross, which had
flowers and a teddy bear in the center.

This is a breaking story. Please check back for updates.
