SAN DIEGO — Police have discovered human remains at a Southcrest house
where 74-year-old Dwight Rhone previously lived, marking a significant
development in an ongoing investigation that has drawn police activity to
the property for the past three days. While Rhone has been named a person
of interest in connection with the remains, he has not yet been charged in
relation to the discovery.

The identities of the victims and the exact number of remains found have
not been disclosed. The location within the house where the remains were
discovered also remains unclear.

Photos obtained by CBS 8, taken in 2023 before the house was renovated and
sold, show the residence in a deteriorated condition. The images reveal a
basement with wooden stairs leading underneath the house—an area police
have been investigating. One photo shows a woman sitting on a bed;
according to the photographer, she was a transient.

Rhone, an ex-convict with a criminal history dating back to his teenage
years, is currently in jail facing charges related to a 2023 murder in the
South Bay. He is scheduled for a hearing in that murder case on Wednesday
of next week.

Court records paint a troubling picture of Rhone's past behavior at the
residence. In a 2017 restraining order seeking to remove him from the
house, his sister-in-law wrote, "(Rhone) has brought men and women to our
home who are drunk and appear to be on drugs."

Federal court records reveal additional concerns. In 2018, a Border Patrol
agent wrote in a sworn declaration, "Rhone has been previously apprehended
for alien smuggling in the Campo Border Patrol Station's area of
responsibility and is a known alien smuggler."

In 2023, Rhone was arrested for being a felon in possession of a handgun
while in the company of a gang member. "SDPD officers... observed a known
5-9 Brim criminal street gang member sitting in the passenger side of the
vehicle," one officer wrote in a court statement.
