TikTokless ??? US House Overwhelmingly Votes to ZAP China-Linked Forum

A bill that could lead to a ban of TikTok in the U.S. sailed
through the House with rapid speed on Wednesday, but is facing
headwinds in the slower-moving Senate, where previous efforts
to restrict the popular app have stalled.

The House on Wednesday overwhelmingly passed the bill, known
as the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled 
Applications Act, in a vote of 352 to 65. The legislation would
require TikTok's parent company, the Beijing-based ByteDance,
to sell TikTok within six months to maintain access to U.S.
web-hosting services and app stores.

The bipartisan legislation quickly gained momentum in the
House, unanimously advancing out of the House Energy and
Commerce Committee last week.

   That's a VERY wide vote margin given the normally
   ultra-polarized state of the Legislature.

   May have problems in the Senate, but it looks as if
   the sentiment IS strong for nuking TikTok.

   Biden said he WOULD sign the bill into law if it
   arrived on his desk.

   There is, legit, debate about libertarian concepts,
   censorship and precedent for govt micromanagement
   of 'social' networking sites. There is also a
   question about how EFFECTIVE this would be in
   protecting the national security and keep
   exploitable personal details away from China
   since US equivs can and do sell such info to
   any buyer - which can include China or one
   of its proxies.

   Trump, in something of a reverse, said he now
   kind-of opposes this law - at least in its
   present form - saying US kiddies would "go
   crazy" if they couldn't get their TikTok.

   I'd submit one of the reasons they ARE crazy
   is BECAUSE of TikTok  :-)

   The bill does NOT actually ban TikTok as most
   users experience it - the bill requires its PRC
   masters to divest and disconnect, sell the visible
   TikTok to a US or EU corp.

   BUT, are Bezos or Zuckerman any more reliable ? They
   went whole hawg biasing their services in a partisan
   fashion.

   Though it is anti-libertarian, I am going to suggest
   supporting this law. China decidedly does NOT have
   our best interests at heart, it is technically
   an Enemy Power hostile to the USA/EU. The more
   info it gets in more detail in real-time ... just
   makes it TOO easy for them to launch cyber-attacks.

   (although it's TOO EASY already for a bunch of reasons)

   I wonder if today's busy all-purpose internet will have
   to contract considerably over the next years just for
   the sake of safety ? Big govt/health/bank systems may
   need to use less-exposed means. Utility grids and
   industrial-automation systems too. What they WANT us
   to use the internet for perhaps always assumed there
   would be only good actors involved. That's less and
   less true every day - but DENIAL still rules.
