The left is correct on this one. Slavery gave the South vastly more population and thus dozens more representatives than they deserved. The slaves shouldn't have been counted at all for representation purposes because as slaves, they had no representation. In 1787 the US population was a bit under 4 million. The slave population was almost 3/4 of a million. Though they could not vote, they were still counted as population for the purpose of calculating the number of reps in the house and the number of electors each state was entitled to.
