Dad failed the medical so the army wouldn't take him.  He did Civil
Defence stuff instead, like fire-spotting from church towers during 
air raids.  Most civilians were sheltering from the bombing by going
"down the tube" to the underground railway.  If you were lucky, your
home would still be there when you came up to the surface the next
morning, but many were bombed out.
