Sure you can subcontract raising children.  For some kids, it may be a 
benefit if the caregiver is better at it than the parent. They can even 
video important things like the kid's first steps and such to show the 
parents.

Every case is different.  My kids (now 56,54) will tell you they like 
coming home from school and be greeted by mom.  Occasionally, mom would 
volunteer at the school.
