I knew a woman PhD chemist that did this.  Her husband was a lawyer and 
they both made good money but with child care and her other costs of 
working figured it was better for the family not to work for the extra 
money.  I also knew another that went back to work when the kids left 
home.  Also knew of a couple of husbands that stayed home to raise the 
kids.  One of them decided he would rather become the mother but that is 
another story.
