skillfully use the metaphor of the journey to suggest the course of 
potential development from moral ignorance to full appreciation of the 
Tao. Like the traveler, the person set upon self­cultivation meets 
various obstacles and detours, but so long as he never swerves from the 
right path, he will eventually arrive safely at his destination. The 
journey metaphor also levels implicit criticism at the Sophists and at 
Chuang tzu, who used the paradox "Mountain and abyss are level" in 
arguing for the absolute equivalence of all experience. Following the 
tradition of the philosopher Hsün tzu, Yang Hsiung insists upon the 
substantive differences between various courses of action open to the 
individual. In his verses, then, mountain and abyss are shown to be far 
more dangerous than hill and gully.

two senses: It is essential to future development and nourishing like 
yellow Earth. It is pure in that it is both unadulterated and 
concentrated, though latent. Here it is poised to feed the roots of 
future action.

Position 1 is aligned with the Beginning of Thought, as well as with the 
Water phase. The watery depths symbolize the mind's unseen operations 
prior to action and may also suggest the suasive potential of the 
superior man.

The *BABY* IS NAKED, alerting us to man's original likeness to the 
beasts. The *NEWBORN* *BABE* is rosy, with red signifying virile yang 
ch'i, and by extension, perfect potentiality, auspicious coherence, and 
concentration of the vital powers. The powerful metaphor of the rosy 
babe is typically employed by early Taoist thinkers to prove the 
remarkable strength of the inborn capacities.

However, the Mystery is careful to distinguish the potential for virtue 
implanted in all of us from its eventual actualization in the noble man. 
The seeds of inborn goodness are fragile and easily lost. And a return 
to infantile spontaneity is by no means to be confused with true virtue.

Just as the *NAKED* *CHILD* in its highly vulnerable state requires the 
support of both loving parents, so does full development of the 
heart/mind depend upon careful training received from moral superiors. 
This poem praises not the child, but those authorities (living or dead) 
who guide their subordinates "as if they were tending a *NEWBORN* 
*BABE*." As the Changes maxim puts it, "To nourish the Right in the 
young ignoramus is the task of the sage."

Of course, once the extended course of moral training has led the child 
to realize his full potential for humanity, the son becomes the joy of 
his parents' old age. That explains why the parents watch over it not
