Job 29: Why did Job long for the past?

Job longed for the past because it was a time of characterized by the 
conscious presence, communion, and favor of God.

In Job 29:2–5, Job identifies the core of his past joy: "when God 
watched over me," "when His lamp shone upon my head," and "when the 
friendly counsel of God was over my tent." The loss of his material 
possessions and earthly honor was secondary to his perception that God 
had withdrawn His fellowship and turned against him. Job longed for the 
time when God’s favor was evident and uninterrupted.

What should we learn from this?

The God-Centered Nature of True Fellowship: Job's primary treasure was 
God Himself, not the blessings God bestowed. A truly righteous soul 
grieves the perceived loss of God's presence far more than the loss of 
physical prosperity or earthly comfort.

The Imperfection of Subjective Feeling in Divine Favor: Job felt that 
God had abandoned him because his circumstances had drastically changed. 
However, the larger narrative reveals that God had not removed His love 
or favor from Job. Faith must rely on God's character rather than 
emotional perception or temporal circumstances.

The Danger of Nostalgia in Seasons of Suffering: Longing for past days 
of blessing can obscure God's ongoing work in present trials. While 
Job's grief was natural, God was actively working through Job's 
suffering to reveal a deeper revelation of His sovereignty, power, and 
sufficiency that Job could never have known in his days of ease.
