Scripture Establishes Jesus Christ is God

First Proposition

The Bible declares plainly that the Word was God

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. (John 1:1, ESV)

The plain statement of Scripture is that the Word was God. Attempts to change this to read that the Word was merely a god contradict the clear testimony of the rest of the Bible regarding the nature of God and the nature of the Word.

Second Proposition

The Scriptures teach there is only one God and no other god was formed by Him

You are my witnesses, declares the LORD, and my servant whom I have chosen, that you may know and believe me and understand that I am he. Before me no god was formed, nor shall there be any after me. (Isaiah 43:10, ESV)

Thus says the LORD, the King of Israel and his Redeemer, the LORD of hosts: I am the first and I am the last; besides me there is no god. (Isaiah 44:6, ESV)

If Jesus were a created god who came into existence after the Almighty, this would make the Bible contradict itself, because God explicitly states that no god was formed after Him. Because the Bible is completely reliable, Jesus cannot be a lesser, created god. He is the one true God.

Third Proposition

Jesus Christ created all things, proving He Himself is not a created being

For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. (Colossians 1:16, ESV)

All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. (John 1:3, ESV)

The Scripture states that Jesus is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. The very next verse explains exactly what this means: He is supreme over creation because He created all things. The title firstborn indicates supreme rank, authority, and inheritance over the creation. If without Him was not anything made that was made, then Jesus Himself cannot be a made thing. He is the Creator.

Fourth Proposition

God the Father addresses Jesus Christ as God

But of the Son he says, "Your throne, O God, is forever and ever, the scepter of uprightness is the scepter of your kingdom." (Hebrews 1:8, ESV)

Here, God the Father speaks directly to the Son and calls Him God. This leaves no room for debate about whether Jesus is God. The Father Himself establishes the truth of it.

Fifth Proposition

Jesus Christ accepted worship and the title of God from His followers

Thomas answered him, "My Lord and my God!" (John 20:28, ESV)

When Thomas recognized who Jesus was after the resurrection, he did not call Him a god, nor did he simply call Him the Son of God. He addressed Him as my Lord and my God. Jesus did not rebuke Thomas for this statement, but accepted it as the correct conclusion of faith.
