Psalm 9: What Reasons Does It Give To Praise God?

David’s meditation shows three reasons to praise God: God’s 
faithfulness, righteousness, and power [1]

*God’s Faithfulness* anchors the first category. Because of God’s 
marvelous works down through the ages, whenever trouble surrounds us, we 
should take a stroll through the past. Every one of us can rehearse his 
or her personal history and testify to God’s faithfulness. Time and 
again, when we have asked Him to meet some need, we have witnessed the 
marvelous works of God in our lives.[1] God had won a victory for David, 
so he sang a song of praise to the Lord. Because David was doing God’s 
will, the Lord maintained his cause.[2]

*God’s Righteousness* forms the second pillar. David looked ahead to the 
time when God would finally judge sin and establish His righteous 
kingdom.[2] The Lord’s self-revelation in judgment struck terror in the 
hearts of the wicked, but hope in those oppressed by wickedness.[3] God 
does not forget his own, in contrast to the nations that forget God. The 
“poor” refers to those righteous servants of God who suffer unjustly at 
the hands of evil persons, yet whose hope of God’s intervention does not 
perish.[3]

*God’s Power* completes the triad. He is their Refuge and will never 
forsake them.[2] David’s motive was that he might praise the Lord and 
tell others of His salvation, because there is a place called hell and 
God’s salvation is the only escape from that terrible place.[2]
