Psalm 28: How Does It Reveal God?

Psalm 28 demonstrates the character of God across three offices: Holy Judge, Covenant Redeemer, and Faithful Shepherd.

  •  God as Holy Judge (Verses 1–5)

The Lord exercises absolute, retributive justice against the wicked.

The holiness of God requires a sharp distinction between the righteous who seek Him and the hypocrites who speak peace while harboring malice. His judgment is governed by lex talionis: repaying evil workers according to the work of their hands.

The fundamental charge against the ungodly is theological: they fail to regard the works of the Lord and the operation of His hands. Because they disregard His revelation and righteous rule, the holy Judge tears them down rather than building them up. He does not allow the unrepentant to escape the penalty their deeds demand.

  •  God as Covenant Redeemer (Verses 6–8)

The Lord delivers His people based on His covenant commitment to hear and save.

God does not remain deaf to supplication; He intervenes directly for the one who trusts in Him. As Redeemer, Yahweh becomes the active "strength and shield" of the believer, turning helplessness into deliverance, and fear into exultant praise.

This redemption extends beyond the individual to the covenant office: the Lord is the saving refuge of His anointed king. Deliverance is not an abstract concept, but the concrete rescue of the faithful through divine power.

  •  God as Faithful Shepherd (Verse 9)

The Lord sustains, guides, and preserves His flock for eternity.

The psalm culminates in pastoral care for the corporate people of God, designated as His heritage and inheritance. The petition demands three actions that only a shepherd can provide: save the sheep, bless their provision, and feed and carry them forever.

God does not abandon His flock after delivering them from immediate danger. He bears them up, leading and sustaining them perpetually under His sovereign, benevolent oversight.
