What the Bible Teaches Regarding Blood Transfusions and the Command to 
Abstain from Blood

The Biblical Prohibition Specifically Forbids Eating Blood as Food

(1) "Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you. And as I gave 
you the green plants, I give you everything. But you shall not eat flesh 
with its life, that is, its blood." (Genesis 9:3–4 ESV)
God gave animal flesh to Noah and his descendants for food, but strictly 
forbade eating the flesh while the lifeblood was still in it. The 
context is unequivocally dietary consumption.

(2) "For the life of every creature is its blood: its blood is its life. 
Therefore I have said to the people of Israel, You shall not eat the 
blood of any creature, for the life of every creature is its blood. 
Whoever eats it shall be cut off." (Leviticus 17:14 ESV)
God repeatedly defines the infraction as eating the blood of an animal 
slain for food. The prohibition was placed upon taking the lifeblood 
into the digestive tract.

(3) "For it has seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us to lay on you 
no greater burden than these requirements: that you abstain from what 
has been sacrificed to idols, and from blood, and from what has been 
strangled, and from sexual immorality." (Acts 15:28–29 ESV)
The Jerusalem Council addressed the Gentile believers regarding pagan 
table practices and meat offered to idols. The abstention from blood and 
strangled meat preserved table fellowship among Jewish and Gentile 
Christians by avoiding pagan culinary practices.

Proposition: The Scriptural command to abstain from blood is strictly 
and consistently directed against the ingestion and eating of blood as food.

A Medical Transfusion is Not Digestion or Ingestion of Food

(1) "Do you not see that whatever goes into the mouth passes into the 
stomach and is expelled?" (Matthew 15:17 ESV)
Our Lord defines the process of eating: food enters the mouth, passes 
through the stomach, is digested for nourishment, and is eliminated.

(2) A blood transfusion does not enter the digestive system, is not 
digested as nutrients, and does not feed the body. It is a cellular 
tissue transfer directly into the circulatory system to sustain 
oxygenation and preserve bodily life. The analogy comparing alcohol 
infusion to a blood transfusion fails because alcohol is a drug that 
intoxicates whether absorbed through the stomach or the bloodstream, 
whereas blood is cellular tissue that functions only to sustain life 
within the circulatory vessels, not as digestive fuel.

Proposition: An intravenous blood transfusion does not constitute 
eating, digesting, or consuming blood as food within the meaning of 
Scripture.

God's Law Prioritizes the Preservation of Human Life

(1) "He said to them, 'Which one of you who has a sheep, if it falls 
into a pit on the Sabbath, will not take hold of it and lift it out? Of 
how much more value is a man than a sheep! So it is lawful to do good on 
the Sabbath.'" (Matthew 12:11–12 ESV)
Jesus taught that preserving and saving life supersedes ceremonial 
restrictions.

(2) "And he said to them, 'Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to 
do harm, to save life or to kill?' But they were silent." (Mark 3:4 ESV)
The Lord rebuked the Pharisees for enforcing ritual regulations in a way 
that permitted a person to suffer or die when relief and life could be 
provided.

(3) "By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we 
ought to lay down our lives for the brothers." (1 John 3:16 ESV)
Giving of oneself to preserve another's physical life reflects the 
supreme principle of Christian love, not the violation of a dietary statute.

Proposition: Biblical law never requires the sacrifice of human life to 
satisfy a dietary regulation concerning animal consumption.

Summary

The Old and New Testaments consistently define the prohibition of blood 
as eating or ingesting it as food.

A medical blood transfusion is a life-preserving tissue graft, not an 
act of nutritional consumption.

Jesus explicitly condemned religious traditions that elevated ceremonial 
or dietary interpretations above the saving of human life.

Therefore, teaching that a life-saving blood transfusion is the 
equivalent of eating blood contradicts both the plain language of the 
biblical text and the direct teachings of Jesus Christ concerning the 
preservation of human life.
