The Inability of Man's Death or Any Created Thing to Atone for Sin

The Utter Inability of Human Death or Wealth to Ransom the Soul

(1) "Truly no man can ransom another, or give to God the price of his
life, for the ransom of their life is costly and can never suffice, that
he should live on forever and never see the pit." (Psalm 49:7-9, ESV)

No human being possesses the power, life, or resources to pay the ransom
price for another person. The required price for redemption is so great
that mere human life and death can never suffice.

(2) "And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that
comes judgment." (Hebrews 9:27, ESV)

Human death is not an atoning payment that settles sin; it is the
appointed threshold leading directly to divine judgment and accountability.

(3) "And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne,
and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the book
of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books,
according to what they had done." (Revelation 20:12, ESV)

Those who die in their sins do not have their sins atoned for or cleared
by physical death; they face judgment for their deeds after death.

(4) "For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit
his soul? For what can a man give in return for his soul?" (Mark
8:36-37, ESV)

A man has nothing of his own—neither his possessions nor his own
soul—that he can offer to buy back or atone for his lost condition.

First Proposition: Human physical death does not satisfy divine justice,
cancel guilt, or ransom anyone from condemnation; rather, it delivers
the sinner directly to divine judgment.

God's Rejection of Any Blemished or Defiled Offering

(1) "You shall not offer anything that has a blemish, for it will not be
acceptable for you." (Leviticus 22:20, ESV)

God explicitly forbids and rejects any sacrifice that possesses a
blemish or defect.

(2) "If anyone offers a sacrifice of peace offerings to the Lord to
fulfill a vow or for a freewill offering, from the herd or from the
flock, to be accepted it must be perfect; there shall be no blemish in
it." (Leviticus 22:21, ESV)

In order for any sacrifice to be accepted before God, it must be
entirely perfect and without blemish.

(3) "The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord, but the
prayer of the upright is acceptable to him." (Proverbs 15:8, ESV)

The offering or sacrifice of a guilty, sinful person is an abomination
in the sight of God.

(4) "The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination; how much more when
he brings it with evil intent." (Proverbs 21:27, ESV)

Nothing offered from a sinful, unregenerate human being is acceptable to
God; it is utterly abhorrent to Him.

(5) "Then Haggai said, 'If someone who is unclean by contact with a dead
body touches any of these, does it become unclean?' The priests answered
and said, 'It does become unclean.' Then Haggai answered and said, 'So
is it with this people, and with this nation before me, declares the
Lord, and so with every work of their hands; and what they offer there
is unclean.'" (Haggai 2:13-14, ESV)

Defilement corrupts everything a defiled person produces or offers. A
sinner cannot offer himself to God, because his own defilement makes his
offering unclean.

Second Proposition: God requires absolute perfection in any offering
made for sin, strictly rejecting anything tainted by defect. Because
every mere human being is morally blemished and defiled by sin, the
death or sacrifice of a sinner is unclean and an abomination to God.

The Inability of Human Works, Torments, or Religious Deeds to Remove Sin

(1) "For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his
sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin." (Romans 3:20, ESV)

No human deed, suffering under the law, or personal effort can justify
anyone in the sight of God.

(2) "I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness were
through the law, then Christ died for no purpose." (Galatians 2:21, ESV)

If any human action, legal obedience, or human sacrifice could produce
righteousness or atone for sin, Christ's death would have been
completely useless and without purpose.

(3) "For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse; for it is
written, 'Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in
the Book of the Law, and do them.'" (Galatians 3:10, ESV)

Relying on anything originating from man leaves a person under the curse
of God, because divine law requires continuous and absolute perfection.

(4) "For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away
sins." (Hebrews 10:4, ESV)

Physical, earthly animal sacrifices were inherently powerless to remove
sin from the conscience; they merely foreshadowed the only true sacrifice.

Third Proposition: No human works, personal suffering, legal
performance, or earthly offerings possess any power to remove sin or
justify man before God.

The Absolute Spotlessness and Efficacy of Christ's Sacrificial Death

(1) "Knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from
your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, but
with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish
or spot." (1 Peter 1:18-19, ESV)

Redemption is accomplished solely through the precious blood of Jesus
Christ, who alone meets God's standard of being a Lamb completely
without blemish and without spot.

(2) "How much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal
Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience
from dead works to serve the living God." (Hebrews 9:14, ESV)

The blood of Christ purifies the human conscience because He offered
Himself without blemish to God.

(3) "He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth." (1
Peter 2:22, ESV)

Jesus Christ lived in absolute, flawless sinlessness.

(4) "For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him
we might become the righteousness of God." (2 Corinthians 5:21, ESV)

Jesus Christ was entirely without personal sin, making Him the only
qualified substitute upon whom God could place the sins of others.

(5) "For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the
unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the
flesh but made alive in the spirit." (1 Peter 3:18, ESV)

It was the righteous One dying on behalf of the unrighteous that made
peace with God.

(6) "And by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of
the body of Jesus Christ once for all. And every priest stands daily at
his service, offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never
take away sins. But when Christ had offered for all time a single
sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God." (Hebrews
10:10-12, ESV)

The single offering of Jesus Christ's body was made once for all time,
fully removing sin and completing the work of atonement forever.

Fourth Proposition: Jesus Christ alone was spotless, sinless, and
acceptable to God; therefore, His death alone possesses atoning value to
satisfy divine justice and remove the guilt of sin.

The Exclusive Provision of Salvation in Christ Alone

(1) "Jesus said to him, 'I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No
one comes to the Father except through me.'" (John 14:6, ESV)

There is no way to God the Father apart from Jesus Christ.

(2) "And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name
under heaven given among men by which we must be saved." (Acts 4:12, ESV)

God has provided no other person, means, or name under heaven through
which salvation can be attained.

(3) "For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and
men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all, which
is the testimony given at the proper time." (1 Timothy 2:5-6, ESV)

There exists only one mediator between God and men, Jesus Christ, who
alone gave Himself as the ransom price for all.

(4) "Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey
the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him." (John
3:36, ESV)

Those who do not place their faith in Jesus Christ do not have their
sins removed; the wrath of God remains upon them continuously.

Fifth Proposition: God has established no other sacrifice, ransom,
mediator, or name by which man can be saved. Apart from faith in the
spotless sacrifice of Jesus Christ, divine wrath remains upon man.

Summary

By the plain statements of Scripture:

Human physical death is not a payment that satisfies divine justice or
ransoms the soul, but is the passage directly into divine judgment
(Psalm 49:7-9; Hebrews 9:27; Revelation 20:12).

God strictly rejects any sacrifice or offering that contains a blemish
or moral defilement; because all men are sinners, a sinner's death or
offering is unclean and an abomination to God (Leviticus 22:20-21;
Proverbs 15:8; Haggai 2:13-14).

No human deeds, legal observances, or animal offerings can take away sin
or grant justification before God (Romans 3:20; Galatians 2:21; Hebrews
10:4).

Jesus Christ, being the only sinless, spotless, and unblemished Lamb of
God, offered the only acceptable, once-for-all sacrifice capable of
removing sin (1 Peter 1:18-19; 2 Corinthians 5:21; Hebrews 10:10-12).

Salvation, atonement, and reconciliation with God are found exclusively
in Jesus Christ, and all who reject Him remain under the wrath of God
(John 14:6; Acts 4:12; 1 Timothy 2:5-6; John 3:36).

Therefore, the teaching that a man's own physical death pays for or
atones for his sins is a direct contradiction of the Word of God.

Good News †

By dying on the cross, Christ canceled the legal debt of our sins
against God (Colossians 2:14), and God validated this victory by raising
Him from the grave (Romans 1:4). God is now able to justly declare
sinners righteous (Romans 3:26) and spare them from His future wrath (1
Thessalonians 1:10). This grace is freely given to all who place their
trust in Him (Romans 6:23). Put your faith in the Lord and call on His
name to be saved (Romans 10:9-13):
