Christ is the Sabbath Rest

From Creation, the Sabbath pointed forward to the finished work of redemption. God rested on the seventh day not from exhaustion, but because His creative work was complete, inviting man to live from that finished provision. The Fall introduced the futile toil of self-righteousness, and while the Mosaic Law commanded a weekly cessation from physical labor, it could never grant soul rest. Under the Levitical system, priests stood continuously because the work of atonement was never done, leaving the weekly Sabbath as a recurring shadow of a reality yet to come.

Jesus Christ brought this shadow to its intended fulfillment. Upon the cross, He cried, "It is finished," accomplishing the complete atonement for sin. As Hebrews explains, while Old Testament priests offered repeated sacrifices that could never take away sins, Christ offered one single sacrifice for sins for all time and sat down at the right hand of God. His posture of sitting signifies that the redemptive labor is forever ended.

Hebrews directly applies this to salvation, declaring that there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God, for whoever has entered God's rest has also rested from his works as God did from His. Salvation is ceasing from the exhaustive striving to justify oneself through human effort. When Jesus invites the weary and heavy-laden to come to Him for rest, He offers deliverance from the burden of the law and self-salvation. True biblical Sabbath is not observing a calendar day, but entering by faith into Christ, who is our eternal rest.
