The Deity and Eternal Power of Jesus Christ

The Scriptural Declaration that Jesus Christ is God and Almighty

Claim: The Bible never calls Jesus God or Almighty, nor does the Father 
ever address the Son as God.

Here God the Father directly addresses the Son as "O God."

"Thomas answered him, 'My Lord and my God!'" (John 20:28, ESV)

Thomas addresses Jesus directly as his Lord and his God, and Jesus 
accepts this title without rebuke.

(3) Titus 2:13
"waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great 
God and Savior Jesus Christ," (Titus 2:13, ESV)

The Apostle Paul explicitly calls Jesus Christ "our great God and Savior."

(4) Isaiah 9:6
"For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government 
shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful 
Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace." (Isaiah 
9:6, ESV)

The coming Messiah is explicitly named the "Mighty God."

(5) Revelation 1:8 with Revelation 1:17-18 and Revelation 22:12-13, 16
" 'I am the Alpha and the Omega,' says the Lord God, 'who is and who was 
and who is to come, the Almighty.' " (Revelation 1:8, ESV)
"When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. But he laid his 
right hand on me, saying, 'Fear not, I am the first and the last, and 
the living one. I died, and behold I am alive forevermore, and I have 
the keys of Death and Hades.' " (Revelation 1:17-18, ESV)
" 'Behold, I am coming soon, bringing my recompense with me, to repay 
each one for what he has done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first 
and the last, the beginning and the end.' ... 'I, Jesus, have sent my 
angel to testify to you about these things for the churches.' " 
(Revelation 22:12-13, 16, ESV)

The One who is the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, is the 
Lord God, the Almighty. In Revelation, Jesus declares Himself to be the 
First and the Last who died and is alive forevermore, and the Alpha and 
the Omega who is coming soon.

Proposition: The Scriptures explicitly declare that the Father calls the 
Son God, that the apostles confessed Him as God, and that Jesus bears 
the divine titles of Mighty God, the First and the Last, and the Alpha 
and Omega.

The Scriptural Testimony on John 1:1

Claim: John 1:1 is a translation error and merely describes Jesus as 
godlike rather than truly God.

Refutation from the Plain Statements of Scripture:

(1) John 1:1-3
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word 
was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through 
him, and without him was not any thing made that was made." (John 1:1-3, 
ESV)

The text plainly states three distinct truths:

The Word was already existing in the beginning (eternity).

The Word was with God (distinction of Person).

The Word was God (identical in divine nature and essence).

(2) John 1:14
"And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his 
glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and 
truth." (John 1:14, ESV)

The Word who was God took upon Himself human flesh. The lack of the 
definite article before God in the final clause of John 1:1 properly 
indicates the nature of the Word without confusing the Person of the 
Word with the Person of the Father.

Proposition: John 1:1 directly affirms the eternal deity and distinct 
personhood of the Word who became flesh.

The Creator of All Things Cannot Be a Created Being

Claim: Colossians 1:15 and Revelation 3:14 teach that Jesus was the 
first creation of God.

Refutation from the Plain Statements of Scripture:

(1) Colossians 1:16-17
"For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and 
invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities--all 
things were created through him and for him. And he is before all 
things, and in him all things hold together." (Colossians 1:16-17, ESV)

Every created thing in heaven and on earth was created by Jesus Christ. 
He is before all things. If He created all things, He Himself cannot be 
a created thing. The title "firstborn over all creation" denotes His 
preeminence and supreme rank as heir over all creation, not that He was 
created.

(2) Revelation 3:14
" 'And to the angel of the church in Laodicea write: "The words of the 
Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of God's creation." ' 
" (Revelation 3:14, ESV)

The Greek word rendered "beginning" (arche) signifies the source, ruler, 
or origin of God's creation, entirely consistent with John 1:3 which 
states that without Him was not anything made that was made.

Proposition: Jesus Christ is the uncreated Creator and Sustainer of all 
creation.

Divine Worship Belonging to Jesus Christ

Claim: Only God the Father is to be worshiped, and Jesus is never 
properly worshiped as God.

Refutation from the Plain Statements of Scripture:

(1) Matthew 4:10
"Then Jesus said to him, 'Be gone, Satan! For it is written, "You shall 
worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve." ' " (Matthew 
4:10, ESV)

Jesus confirms that worship belongs only to God.

(2) Acts 10:25-26 and Revelation 22:8-9
"When Peter entered, Cornelius met him and fell down at his feet and 
worshiped him. But Peter lifted him up, saying, 'Stand up; I too am a 
man.' " (Acts 10:25-26, ESV)
"I, John, am the one who heard and saw these things. And when I heard 
and saw them, I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel who showed 
them to me, but he said to me, 'You must not do that! I am a fellow 
servant with you and your brothers the prophets, and with those who keep 
the words of this book. Worship God.' " (Revelation 22:8-9, ESV)

Holy men and holy angels immediately and strictly refuse worship, 
commanding men to worship God alone.

(3) Matthew 14:33 and Matthew 28:9
"And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, 'Truly you are the Son of 
God.' " (Matthew 14:33, ESV)
"And behold, Jesus met them and said, 'Greetings!' And they came up and 
took hold of his feet and worshiped him." (Matthew 28:9, ESV)

Jesus regularly accepted divine worship from His disciples without 
refusing it or rebuking them.

(4) Hebrews 1:6
"And again, when he brings the firstborn into the world, he says, 'Let 
all God's angels worship him.' " (Hebrews 1:6, ESV)

God the Father explicitly commands all the angels of heaven to worship 
the Son.

(5) John 5:23
"that all may honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. Whoever does 
not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him." (John 5:23, ESV)

God requires all men to give the exact same honor to the Son that they 
give to the Father.

(6) Revelation 5:13-14
"And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth 
and in the sea, and all that is in them, saying, 'To him who sits on the 
throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and might forever 
and ever!' And the four living creatures said, 'Amen!' and the elders 
fell down and worshiped." (Revelation 5:13-14, ESV)

The exact same universal worship, praise, and glory given to the Father 
on the throne is given simultaneously to the Lamb.

Proposition: Since worship belongs to God alone, and Scripture commands 
both men and angels to worship Jesus Christ, Jesus Christ is truly God.

Old Testament Passages Concerning Jehovah Applied Directly to Jesus Christ

Claim: The New Testament maintains a complete separation between Jehovah 
and Jesus.

Refutation from the Plain Statements of Scripture:

(1) Isaiah 6:1-3, 10 compared with John 12:41
"In the year that King Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, 
high and lifted up... And one called to another and said: 'Holy, holy, 
holy is the LORD of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!' " 
(Isaiah 6:1, 3, ESV)
"Isaiah said these things because he saw his glory and spoke of him." 
(John 12:41, ESV)

John states that when Isaiah saw the supreme glory of Jehovah on His 
throne in the temple, he saw the glory of Jesus Christ.

(2) Psalm 102:25-27 compared with Hebrews 1:10-12
"Of old you laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the 
work of your hands. They will perish, but you will remain; they will all 
wear out like a garment. You will change them like a robe, and they will 
pass away, but you are the same, and your years have no end." (Psalm 
102:25-27, ESV)
"And, 'You, Lord, laid the foundation of the earth in the beginning, and 
the heavens are the work of your hands; they will perish, but you 
remain; they will all wear out like a garment, like a robe you will roll 
them up, like a garment they will be changed. But you are the same, and 
your years will have no end.' " (Hebrews 1:10-12, ESV)

The Old Testament prayer addressed directly to Jehovah the Creator is 
quoted in Hebrews 1:10-12 as being addressed by the Father directly to 
Jesus the Son.

(3) Isaiah 45:23 compared with Philippians 2:10-11
"By myself I have sworn; from my mouth has gone out in righteousness a 
word that shall not return: 'To me every knee shall bow, every tongue 
shall swear allegiance.' " (Isaiah 45:23, ESV)
"so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on 
earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is 
Lord, to the glory of God the Father." (Philippians 2:10-11, ESV)

What Jehovah swore in Isaiah belongs exclusively to Himself is fulfilled 
when every knee bows and confesses Jesus Christ as Lord.

Proposition: New Testament Scripture takes what is said exclusively of 
Jehovah God in the Old Testament and applies it directly to Jesus Christ.

Summary Conclusion

By the direct address of the Father calling the Son God, by the Son's 
eternal role as the uncreated Creator and Preserver of the universe, by 
the command of God for all men and angels to worship the Son just as 
they worship the Father, and by the application of Old Testament 
passages of Jehovah directly to Jesus Christ, the Bible plainly and 
consistently teaches the full deity and eternal power of the Lord Jesus 
Christ.
