Amos 1

Judgment Against Israel's Neighbors

1 (2Sa 14:2; Hos 1:1) The words of Amos, who was among the shepherds
of Tekoa, which he saw concerning Israel in the days of Uzziah king of Judah
and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash king of Israel two years
before the earthquake.
2 (Joel 3:16; Isa 42:13) He said:
The Lord roars from Zion
and utters His voice from Jerusalem;
the pastures of the shepherds languish,
the top of Carmel withers.
3 (Isa 8:4; Am 1:9) Thus says the Lord:
For three transgressions of Damascus,
and for four, I will not revoke the punishment,
because they have threshed Gilead
with threshing sledges of iron.
4 (2Ki 6:24; Jer 49:27) So I will send fire against the house of Hazael,
and it will devour the fortresses of Ben-Hadad.
5 (2Ki 16:9; Jer 51:30; Am 9:7) I will break the gate bar of Damascus;
from the Valley of Aven I will cut off the one enthroned,
and from Beth Eden the one who holds the scepter.
The people of Aram will go into captivity to Kir,
says the Lord.
6 (2Ch 28:18; 1Sa 6:17) Thus says the Lord:
For three transgressions of Gaza,
and for four, I will not revoke the punishment,
because they carried away into exile an entire deportation,
to deliver them up to Edom.
7 So I will send fire against the wall of Gaza,
and it will devour its fortresses.
8 (Eze 25:16; Isa 14:29-31; Zep 2:4-7) From Ashdod I will cut off
the one enthroned and from Ashkelon the one who holds the scepter.
I will turn My hand against Ekron,
and the remnant of the Philistines will perish,
says the Lord God.
9 (1Ki 9:11-14; Isa 23:1-18) Thus says the Lord:
For three transgressions of Tyre,
and for four, I will not revoke the punishment,
because they delivered up an entire deportation to Edom,
and did not remember the covenant of kinship.
10 (Zec 9:4) So I will send fire against the wall of Tyre,
and it will devour its fortresses.
11 (2Ch 28:17; Nu 20:14-21) Thus says the Lord:
For three transgressions of Edom,
and for four, I will not revoke the punishment,
because he pursued his brother with the sword,
and repressed all pity;
his anger tore with no ceasing,
and his wrath persisted with no end.
12 (Jer 49:7; 49:20) So I will send fire against Teman,
and it will devour the fortresses of Bozrah.
13 (Hos 13:16; Jer 49:1-6) Thus says the Lord:
For three transgressions of the Ammonites,
and for four, I will not revoke the punishment,
because they ripped open the pregnant women of Gilead,
in order to enlarge their border.
14 (Dt 3:11; Am 2:2) So I will kindle a fire against the wall of Rabbah,
and it will devour its fortresses,
with a war cry on the day of battle,
with a tempest on the day of the whirlwind.
15 (Jer 49:3) Their king shall go into captivity,
he and his princes together,
says the Lord.

Amos 1
[1] The words of Amos, who was among the herdman of Tekoa, which he saw
concerning Israel in the days of Uzziah king of Judah, and in the days of
Jeroboam the son of Joash king of Israel, two years before the earthquake.
[2] And he said, The LORD will roar from Zion, and utter his voice from
Jerusalem; and the habitations of the shepherds shall mourn, and the top of
Carmel shall wither.
[3] Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of Damascus, and for four,
I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they have threshed
Gilead with threshing instruments of iron:
[4] But I will send a fire into the house of Hazael, which shall devour the
palaces of Ben-hadad.
[5] I will break also the bar of Damascus, and cut off the inhabitant from
the plain of Aven, and him that holdeth the sceptre from the house of Eden:
and the people of Syria shall go into captivity unto Kir, saith the LORD.
[6] Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of Gaza, and for four, I
will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they carried away captive
the whole captivity, to deliver them up to Edom:
[7] But I will send a fire on the wall of Gaza, which shall devour the palaces
thereof:
[8] And I will cut off the inhabitant from Ashdod, and him that holdeth the
sceptre from Ashkelon, and I will turn mine hand against Ekron: and the
remnant of the Philistines shall perish, saith the Lord GOD.
[9] Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of Tyrus, and for four, I
will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they delivered up the
whole captivity to Edom, and remembered not the brotherly covenant:
[10] But I will send a fire on the wall of Tyrus, which shall devour the
palaces thereof.
[11] Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of Edom, and for four,
I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because he did pursue his
brother with the sword, and did cast off all pity, and his anger did tear
perpetually, and he kept his wrath for ever:
[12] But I will send a fire upon Teman, 
which shall devour the palaces of Bozrah.
[13] Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of the children of Ammon,
and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they have
ripped up the women with child of Gilead,
that they might enlarge their border:
[14] But I will kindle a fire in the wall of Rabbah, and it shall devour the
palaces thereof, with shouting in the day of battle, with a tempest in the day
of the whirlwind:
[15] And their king shall go into captivity, he and his princes together,
saith the LORD.

Amos 2
1 (Isa 15:1-9; Zep 2:8-9) Thus says the Lord:
For three transgressions of Moab,
and for four, I will not revoke the punishment,
because he burned to lime
the bones of the king of Edom.
2 (Jer 48:24; 48:41) So I will send fire against Moab,
and it will devour the fortresses of Kerioth;
Moab will die in uproar,
with a war cry and the alarm of the trumpet.
3 (Jer 48:7) I will cut off the ruler from its midst,
and will slay all its princes with him,
says the Lord.

[1] Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of Moab, and for four,
I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because he burned the bones
of the king of Edom into lime:
[2] But I will send a fire upon Moab, and it shall devour the palaces of
Kerioth: and Moab shall die with tumult, with shouting, and with the sound
of the trumpet:
[3] And I will cut off the judge from the midst thereof, and will slay all
the princes thereof with him, saith the LORD.

Judgment Against Judah

4 (Eze 20:24; 20:13; 20:16) Thus says the Lord:
For three transgressions of Judah,
and for four, I will not revoke the punishment,
because they have rejected the law of the Lord,
and have not kept His commandments.
The lies which their fathers followed
have led them astray.
5 (Jer 17:27; Hos 8:14) So I will send fire against Judah,
and it will devour the fortresses of Jerusalem.

[4] Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of Judah, and for four,
I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they have despised the
law of the LORD, and have not kept his commandments, and their lies caused
them to err, after the which their fathers have walked:
[5] But I will send a fire upon Judah, and it shall devour the palaces
of Jerusalem.

Judgment Against Israel

6 (Joel 3:3; 2Ki 18:12) Thus says the Lord:
For three transgressions of Israel,
and for four, I will not revoke the punishment,
because they sell the righteous for silver,
and the poor for a pair of sandals.
7 (Am 5:12; Isa 10:2) They trample the head of the poor
into the dust of the earth,
and push the oppressed out of the way.
A man and his father go in to the same woman,
profaning My holy name.
8 (Am 6:6) They recline by every altar
on garments taken in pledge,
and in the house of their gods
they drink the wine from those who have been fined.
9 (Mal 4:1; Nu 13:32-33) Yet it was I who destroyed the Amorite before them,
whose height was like the height of the cedars.
He was strong as the oaks,
yet I destroyed his fruit above
and his roots below.
10 (Ex 12:51; Dt 2:7) It was I who brought you up from the land of Egypt,
and led you forty years through the wilderness,
to possess the land of the Amorite.
11 I raised up some of your sons as prophets,
and some of your young men as Nazirites.
Is it not so, O children of Israel?
says the Lord.
12 (Isa 30:10; Am 7:13) But you made the Nazirites drink wine,
and commanded the prophets, saying, "Do not prophesy."
13 (Isa 1:14) Indeed I will slow you down,
as a wagon is slowed that is full of sheaves.
14 (Jer 9:23; Ps 33:16) Flight will perish from the swift,
the strong will not retain his strength,
nor will the warrior save his life.
15 The bowman will not stand firm,
the swift-footed will not escape,
nor will the horseman save his life.
16 (Jdg 4:17; Jer 48:4)1 He that is courageous among the warriors
will flee away naked on that day,
says the Lord.

[6] Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of Israel, and for four, I
will not turn away the punishment thereof;
because they sold the righteous for silver, and the poor for a pair of shoes;
[7] That pant after the dust of the earth on the head of the poor, and turn
aside the way of the meek: and a man and his father will go in unto the same
maid, to profane my holy name:
[8] And they lay themselves down upon clothes laid to pledge by every altar,
and they drink the wine of the condemned in the house of their god.
[9] Yet destroyed I the Amorite before them, whose height was like the height
of the cedars, and he was strong as the oaks; yet I destroyed his fruit from
above, and his roots from beneath.
[10] Also I brought you up from the land of Egypt, and led you forty years
through the wilderness, to possess the land of the Amorite.
[11] And I raised up of your sons for prophets, and of your young men for
Nazarites. Is it not even thus, O ye children of Israel? saith the LORD.
[12] But ye gave the Nazarites wine to drink; and commanded the prophets,
saying, Prophesy not.
[13] Behold, I am pressed under you, as a cart is pressed that is full of
sheaves.
[14] Therefore the flight shall perish from the swift, and the strong shall
not strengthen his force, neither shall the mighty deliver himself:
[15] Neither shall he stand that handleth the bow; and he that is swift of
foot shall not deliver himself: neither shall he that rideth the horse deliver
himself.
[16] And he that is courageous among the mighty shall flee away naked in
that day, saith the LORD.

Amos 3

First Pronouncement of Punishment

1 (Am 2:10; Jer 8:3) Hear this word that the Lord has spoken against you,
O children of Israel, against the whole family I brought up from the land
of Egypt, saying:
2 (Dt 7:6; Ro 2:9) You alone have I known
of all the families of the earth;
therefore I will punish you
for all your iniquities.
3 Do two people walk together,
if they have not agreed?
4 (Ps 104:21; Hos 11:10) Does a lion roar in the forest,
if it has no prey?
Does a young lion cry out from its den,
if it has not caught something?
5 Does a bird fall into a trap on the ground,
if there was no snare for it?
Does a trap spring up from the ground,
if it has not caught something?
6 (Isa 45:7; 14:24-27) If the trumpet blasts in the city,
are not the people frightened?
If there is disaster against a city,
is it not the Lord who has done it?
7 (Ge 18:17; Jn 15:15) Surely the Lord God does nothing
without revealing His purpose
to His servants the prophets.
8 (Jer 20:9; Ac 4:20) The lion has roared;
who will not fear?
The Lord God has spoken;
who can but prophesy?
9 (Am 4:1; 6:1; 1Sa 5:1) Proclaim to the fortresses in Ashdod,
and the fortresses in the land of Egypt, and say:
"Assemble yourselves on the mountains of Samaria,
and see the great disorders within her,
and the oppression in her midst."
10 (Jer 4:22; Zep 1:9) They do not know how to do right, says the Lord,
storing up violence and destruction in their fortresses.
11 (Am 2:5; 6:14) Therefore thus says the Lord God:
An enemy will surround your land;
he will tear down your defenses,
and your fortresses will be plundered.
12 (1Sa 17:34-37; Am 6:4) Thus says the Lord:
As the shepherd rescues out of the mouth of the lion
a pair of legs or a piece of an ear,
so will the children of Israel be rescued,
those who live in Samaria,
with the corner of a bed
or a piece of a couch.
13 Hear and testify against the house of Jacob,
says the Lord God, the God of Hosts:
14 (2Ki 23:15; Hos 10:5-8) Surely on the day
I punish the transgressions of Israel,
I will also punish the altars of Bethel;
the horns of the altar will be cut off
and fall to the ground.
15 (Jdg 3:20; 1Ki 22:39) I will destroy the winter house
as well as the summer house,
and the houses of ivory will perish;
the great houses will come to an end,
says the Lord.

Amos 3
[1] Hear this word that the LORD hath spoken against you, O children of
Israel, against the whole family which I brought up from the land of Egypt,
saying,
[2] You only have I known of all the families of the earth: therefore I
will punish you for all your iniquities.
[3] Can two walk together, except they be agreed?
[4] Will a lion roar in the forest, when he hath no prey? will a young lion
cry out of his den, if he have taken nothing?
[5] Can a bird fall in a snare upon the earth, where no gin is for him? shall
one take up a snare from the earth, and have taken nothing at all?
[6] Shall a trumpet be blown in the city, and the people not be afraid? shall
there be evil in a city, and the LORD hath not done it?
[7] Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto
his servants the prophets.
[8] The lion hath roared, who will not fear? the Lord GOD hath spoken, who
can but prophesy?
[9] Publish in the palaces at Ashdod, and in the palaces in the land of
Egypt, and say, Assemble yourselves upon the mountains of Samaria,
and behold the great tumults in the midst thereof, and the oppressed
in the midst thereof.
[10] For they know not to do right, saith the LORD, who store up violence
and robbery in their palaces.
[11] Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; An adversary there shall be even
round about the land; and he shall bring down thy strength from thee,
and thy palaces shall be spoiled.
[12] Thus saith the LORD; As the shepherd taketh out of the mouth of the lion
two legs, or a piece of an ear; so shall the children of Israel be taken out
that dwell in Samaria in the corner of a bed, and in Damascus in a couch.
[13] Hear ye, and testify in the house of Jacob, saith the Lord GOD, the
God of hosts,
[14] That in the day that I shall visit the transgressions of Israel upon
him I will also visit the altars of Bethel: and the horns of the altar shall
be cut off, and fall to the ground.
[15] And I will smite the winter house with the summer house; and the houses
of ivory shall perish, and the great houses shall have an end, saith the LORD.

Amos 4

Second Pronouncement of Punishment

1 (Ps 22:12; Eze 39:18) Hear this word, you cows of Bashan,
who are on the mountain of Samaria,
who oppress the poor and crush the needy,
who say to their husbands, "Bring us something to drink!"
2 (Ps 89:35; Jer 16:16) The Lord God has sworn by His holiness:
Indeed the days are coming upon you
when they will take you away with hooks,
the last one of you with fishhooks.
3 (Eze 12:5; 12:12) You will go out through breached walls,
every one straight ahead of her;
you will be exiled to Harmon,
says the Lord.
4 (Eze 20:39; Hos 4:15) Come to Bethel and transgress,
to Gilgal and multiply transgression;
bring your sacrifices every morning
and your tithes every three days.
5 (Lev 22:18-21; Ps 81:12) Burn leavened bread as a thank offering;
announce your voluntary offerings loudly,
for so you love to do, O children of Israel,
says the Lord God.
6 (Hag 2:17; Jer 5:3) Though I gave you cleanness of teeth in all your cities
and lack of food in all your places,
yet you did not return to Me,
says the Lord.
7 (Ex 9:26; 9:4) I also withheld the rain from you,
when there were still three months to the harvest.
I would send rain on one town,
and send no rain on another town.
One field would receive rain,
but another field without rain would wither.
8 (1Ki 18:5; Am 4:6) So two or three towns wandered
to one town to drink water,
but they were not satisfied;
yet you did not return to Me,
says the Lord.
9 (Dt 28:22; Hag 2:17) I struck you with blight and mildew.
Locusts devoured your many gardens and vineyards,
your fig trees and olive trees;
yet you did not return to Me,
says the Lord.
10 (Lev 26:25; Dt 28:60) Pestilence like that of Egypt
I sent against you.
By the sword I killed your young men;
your horses were taken captive.
The stench of your camps I brought up into your nostrils;
yet you did not return to Me,
says the Lord.
11 (Isa 13:19; Zec 3:2) I destroyed some of you,
as God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.
You were like a firebrand plucked out of the fire;
yet you did not return to Me,
says the Lord.
12 Therefore thus will I do to you, O Israel,
and because I will do this to you,
prepare to meet your God, O Israel!
13 (Am 5:8; 9:6; Mic 1:3) The One who forms the mountains
and creates the wind,
who reveals His thoughts to man,
who turns the darkness into dawn
and strides on the heights of the earth-
the Lord, the God of Hosts, is His name.

Amos 4
[1] Hear this word, ye kine of Bashan, that are in the mountain of Samaria,
which oppress the poor, which crush the needy, which say to their masters,
Bring, and let us drink.
[2] The Lord GOD hath sworn by his holiness, that, lo, the days shall
come upon you, that he will take you away with hooks, and your posterity
with fishhooks.
[3] And ye shall go out at the breaches, every cow at that which is before
her; and ye shall cast them into the palace, saith the LORD.
[4] Come to Bethel, and transgress; at Gilgal multiply transgression;
and bring your sacrifices every morning, and your tithes after three years:
[5] And offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving with leaven, and proclaim and
publish the free offerings: for this liketh you, O ye children of Israel,
saith the Lord GOD.
[6] And I also have given you cleanness of teeth in all your cities, and want
of bread in all your places: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the LORD.
[7] And also I have withholden the rain from you, when there were yet three
months to the harvest: and I caused it to rain upon one city, and caused it
not to rain upon another city: one piece was rained upon, and the piece
whereupon it rained not withered.
[8] So two or three cities wandered unto one city, to drink water; but they
were not satisfied: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the LORD.
[9] I have smitten you with blasting and mildew: when your gardens and your
vineyards and your fig trees and your olive trees increased, the palmerworm
devoured them: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the LORD.
[10] I have sent among you the pestilence after the manner of Egypt: your
young men have I slain with the sword, and have taken away your horses;
and I have made the stink of your camps to come up unto your nostrils:
yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the LORD.
[11] I have overthrown some of you, as God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah,
and ye were as a firebrand plucked out of the burning:
yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the LORD.
[12] Therefore thus will I do unto thee, O Israel: and because I will do this
unto thee, prepare to meet thy God, O Israel.
[13] For, lo, he that formeth the mountains, and createth the wind, and
declareth unto man what is his thought, that maketh the morning darkness,
and treadeth upon the high places of the earth, The LORD, The God of hosts,
is his name.

Amos 5

Third Pronouncement of Punishment

1 (Eze 19:1; Jer 7:29) Hear this word which I take up as a dirge against you,
O house of Israel:
2 (Jer 14:17) Fallen, no more to rise
is maiden Israel;
forsaken on her land,
with no one to raise her up.
3 For thus says the Lord God:
The city that went out with a thousand
will be left with a hundred,
and the one that went out with a hundred
will be left with ten for the house of Israel.
4 (Isa 55:3; 2Ch 15:2) Indeed, thus says the Lord to the house of Israel:
Seek Me and live!
5 (Am 4:4; 8:14) But do not seek Bethel,
and do not enter into Gilgal
or cross over to Beersheba;
for Gilgal will surely go into captivity,
and Bethel shall be no more.
6 (Am 5:4) Seek the Lord and live,
or He will break out like fire in the house of Joseph,
and it will devour Bethel,
with no one to quench it.
7 (Am 6:12) You who turn justice into bitterness
and cast righteousness down to the ground!
8 (Am 4:13; Job 9:9; Ps 104:20) The One who made the Pleiades and Orion,
who turns the deep darkness into dawn
and darkens the day into night,
who summons the waters of the sea
and pours them out on the surface of the earth-
the Lord is His name,
9 the One who flashes destruction against the strong,
so that destruction comes against the fortress.
10 (1Ki 22:8; Isa 29:21) They hate the one who prosecutes at the gate,
and abhor the one who speaks with integrity.
11 (Mic 6:15; Dt 28:30) Therefore, because you trample on the poor
and take from him a levy of wheat,
though you have built houses of hewn stone,
you will not dwell in them;
though you have planted pleasant vineyards,
you will not drink their wine.
12 (Am 2:6-7; 1Sa 8:3) For I know your transgressions are many
and your sins are grievous,
you who oppress the just,
who take a bribe and subvert the needy at the gate.
13 (Ecc 3:7; Hos 4:4) Therefore the prudent are silent at such a time,
for it is an evil time.
14 (Mic 3:11) Seek good and not evil, so that you may live;
then the Lord, the God of Hosts, will truly be with you,
as you claim.
15 (Ps 97:10; Joel 2:14) Hate evil and love good, and establish justice
at the gate. It may then be that the Lord God of Hosts will be gracious
to the remnant of Joseph.
16 (Joel 1:11; Jer 9:10) Therefore thus says the Lord, the God of Hosts,
the Lord:
Wailing will be in all the squares,
and in all the streets they will say, "Alas! Alas!"
They shall call the farmer to mourning,
and to wailing those skilled in lamentation.
17 (Ex 12:12; Isa 16:10) In all vineyards there shall be wailing,
for I will pass through you,
says the Lord.

[1] Hear ye this word which I take up against you, even a lamentation,
O house of Israel.
[2] The virgin of Israel is fallen; she shall no more rise: she is forsaken
upon her land; there is none to raise her up.
[3] For thus saith the Lord GOD; The city that went out by a thousand shall
leave an hundred, and that which went forth by an hundred shall leave ten,
to the house of Israel.
[4] For thus saith the LORD unto the house of Israel, Seek ye me, and ye
shall live:
[5] But seek not Bethel, nor enter into Gilgal, and pass not to Beer-sheba:
for Gilgal shall surely go into captivity, and Bethel shall come to nought.
[6] Seek the LORD, and ye shall live; lest he break out like fire in the
house of Joseph, and devour it, and there be none to quench it in Bethel.
[7] Ye who turn judgment to wormwood, and leave off righteousness in the 
earth,
[8] Seek him that maketh the seven stars and Orion, and turneth the shadow
of death into the morning, and maketh the day dark with night: that calleth
for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth:
The LORD is his name:
[9] That strengtheneth the spoiled against the strong, so that the spoiled
shall come against the fortress.
[10] They hate him that rebuketh in the gate, and they abhor him that
speaketh uprightly.
[11] Forasmuch therefore as your treading is upon the poor, and ye take
from him burdens of wheat: ye have built houses of hewn stone, but ye shall
not dwell in them; ye have planted pleasant vineyards,
but ye shall not drink wine of them.
[12] For I know your manifold transgressions and your mighty sins: they
afflict the just, they take a bribe, and they turn aside the poor in the
gate from their right.
[13] Therefore the prudent shall keep silence in that time; for it is an
evil time.
[14] Seek good, and not evil, that ye may live: and so the LORD,
the God of hosts, shall be with you, as ye have spoken.
[15] Hate the evil, and love the good, and establish judgment in the gate:
it may be that the LORD God of hosts will be gracious unto the remnant of
Joseph.
[16] Therefore the LORD, the God of hosts, the Lord, saith thus; Wailing
shall be in all streets; and they shall say in all the highways,
Alas! alas! and they shall call the husbandman to mourning,
and such as are skillful of lamentation to wailing.
[17] And in all vineyards shall be wailing: for I will pass through thee,
saith the LORD.

The Day of the Lord Is Darkness

18 (Joel 1:15; Isa 5:19) Woe to you that desire
the day of the Lord!
Why do you want the day of the Lord?
It is darkness, and not light,
19 (Isa 24:17-18; Jer 15:2-3) as if someone fled away from a lion,
but a bear attacked him,
or got into the house
and rested his hand on the wall,
but a snake bit him.
20 (Isa 13:10) Will not the day of the Lord be darkness, and not light?
Will it not be deep darkness, with no brightness in it?
21 (Lev 26:31; Isa 1:11-16) I hate, I despise your festivals,
and I am not pleased by your solemn assemblies.
22 (Isa 66:3; Mic 6:6-7) Though you offer Me burnt offerings
or your grain offerings,
I will not accept them,
nor will I regard the offerings
of your fattened animals.
23 (Am 6:5; 8:3) Take away from Me the noise of your songs;
I will not listen to the melody of your harps.
24 (Mic 6:8) But let justice roll down like water,
and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.
25 (Ac 7:42-43; Jos 24:14) Did you bring Me sacrifices and offerings
those forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel?
26 But you will carry away Sukuth your king
and Kaiwan your star-images,
your gods that you made for yourselves,
27 (2Ki 17:6; Am 4:13) as I drive you away into exile beyond Damascus,

As a child, I brought home a report card with all S's, which stood for 
Satisfactory. My sister, who was five years older than me, had a mixture 
of A’s and B’s. I thought our report cards proved I was smarter because I 
had what I thought was the equivalent of all A's. My older brother then 
proceeded to offer us a test. He went to my parents' bookshelf and pulled out 
a book. He asked me to read a passage. I stumbled, only recognizing a few 
words. My sister read the passage flawlessly. My brother declared 
her the smartest.

Lesson learned. His test proved to be wise.

The people in Israel learned a lesson on wisdom from King Solomon. Two women 
had delivered babies. One baby died when his mother accidentally "lay on him"
(1 Kings 3:19). This mother then tried to claim the living baby as her own. 
The women went to Solomon to ask who should keep the baby. When he heard the 
complaint, he ordered that the living baby be cut in two so both women could 
have a half of the child (v. 25).

The woman who was not the mother agreed to this order, but the true mother 
said, "Give her the living baby! Don't kill him!" (v. 26). When she spoke up 
to save the child, Solomon ruled that she was the mother and said to give her 
the baby (v. 27). Solomon's God-given wisdom was on full display.

As God helps us, our actions can show others the true wisdom 
that comes from Him too (Proverbs 2:6).

Romans 8:38-39

Separation is a fact of human life. Relationships disintegrate,
children grow up, loved ones die, husbands and wives divorce,
friends changes and drift apart. We may resist change and separation,
but we must deal with them nevertheless.
Separation sometimes is a natural result of growth and development;
sometimes it is a violent, cataclysmic shaking of an individual's life.
2 lifelong friends go separate ways to college or into future careers;
a church splits over doctrinal differences; a wife finds out a hidden
secret in her husband's past.
But with God, there is no separation, no death, no breaking of vows,
no growing beyond the relationship. Nothing, says Paul, can separate
us from the love of God. A skeleton in my closet, once revealed, may
cost me the trust of those I thought were my friends. But God knows
all my past, all my sin; he forgives, and it cannot separate me from him.
My present personal struggles may cause trouble in my job and result in
the loss of that income, but God understands what I'm going through,
and even when I'm angry at him, he can take it without drawing away
or striking back. My present problems cannot separate me from the Lord.
And God knows, too, the plan he has established for my future. I cannot
walk away from him, grow beyond my need for him, or outrun him into
tomorrow.
She may separate me from my awareness of God's presence in my life,
but it cannot set me beyond his reach. There is no power that is greater
than God's love, and no place I can go that will separate me
from that love.

When the new moon is sighted it marks the beginning of t he new Islamic month
and Eid al-Fitr, the "Festival of Breaking the Fast", will start! After 30 days
of fasting, the Eid  celebration at the end of Ramadan is a joyful time that 
usually lasts about 3 days. Muslims will buy new clothes, exchange gifts and,
of course, enjoy special foods. In Muslim-majority nations, the streets may be
decorated and festivals will be held.

For many Muslims, Eid-al-Fitr begins with communal prayers at daybreak and the
distribution of money (zakat) to the poor, which is one of the 5 pillars of
Islam.

You can greet Muslim friends during this time by saying "Eid Mubarak",
which means Blessed Eid!"

Ramadan is over for this year, but you can continue to pray for Muslims you 
know, and Muslims around the world:

- Despite the unsettling developments in our world today that involve actions
in the name of Islam, there is at the same time a largely untold story about
unprecedented movement to Christ among Muslims. There have been more such
movements of thousands or more new disciples among Muslims in the last three
decades or so than in all the previous history of Christian Muslim
relationships! Pray for this momentum to continue.
Acts 2:12-17 :  17 "In the last days it shall be," says God,
"that I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh; 
your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, 
your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams.
18 Even on My menservants and maidservants 
I will pour out My Spirit in those days; and they shall prophesy. 
19 And I will show wonders in heaven above and signs on the earth below: 
blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke.  20 The sun shall be turned into darkness,
and the moon into blood, before that great and glorious day of the Lord comes.
21 And whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved."[a]

I struggled with depression, brokenness, and addiction to
