NUMBERS 30

The Law About Vows

1 (Nu 7:2) And Moses spoke to the heads of the tribes of the children 
of Israel, saying: This is the thing that the Lord has commanded. 
2 (Job 22:27; Ps 22:25) If a man vows a vow to the Lord, or swears 
an oath to bind himself with a bond, he will not break his word. 
He will do according to all that proceeds out of his mouth.
3 If a woman makes a vow to the Lord, and binds herself by a bond, 
while in her father's house in her youth, 
4 and her father hears her vow and her bond with which she has bound 
herself, and her father is silent to her, then all her vows will stand, 
and every bond with which she has bound herself will stand. 
5 But if her father restrains her in the day he hears, none of her vows 
or her bonds with which she has bound herself will stand, 
and the Lord will forgive her, because her father restrained her.
6 (Ps 56:12) If she had a husband when she vowed, or uttered anything 
out of her lips with which she bound herself, 
7 and her husband heard it and was silent to her in the day that he heard it, 
then her vows will stand, and her bonds with 
which she bound herself will stand. 
8 (Ge 3:16) But if her husband restrains her on the day that he heard it, 
then he will make her vow which she vowed and that which she uttered 
with her lips, with which she bound herself, of no effect, 
and the Lord will forgive her.
9 But every vow of a widow and of her that is divorced, 
with which she has bound herself, will stand against her.
10 If she vowed in her husband's house, or bound herself by a bond 
with an oath, 
11 and her husband heard it and was silent to her and did not restrain her, 
then all her vows will stand, and every bond with 
which she bound herself will stand. 
12 (Nu 30:8) But if her husband has clearly voided them on the day 
he heard them, then whatever proceeded out of her lips concerning her vows, 
or concerning the bond of herself, will not stand. Her husband 
has voided them, and the Lord will forgive her. 
13 Every vow, and every binding oath to afflict her soul, 
her husband may establish, or her husband may nullify. 
14 But if her husband says nothing to her from day to day, 
then he confirms all her vows, or all her pledges, which bind her. 
He confirms them because he said nothing to her on the day that he heard them. 
15 (Lev 5:1) But if he clearly makes them void after he has heard them, 
then he will bear her iniquity.
16 These are the statutes which the Lord commanded Moses, 
between a man and his wife, and between the father and his daughter, 
while she is still young and in her father's house.

Numbers 30
[1] And Moses spake unto the heads of the tribes concerning the children of
Israel, saying, This is the thing which the LORD hath commanded.
[2] If a man vow a vow unto the LORD, or swear an oath to bind his soul with
a bond; he shall not break his word, he shall do according to all that
proceedeth out of his mouth.
[3] If a woman also vow a vow unto the LORD, and bind herself by a bond,
being in her father's house in her youth;
[4] And her father hear her vow, and her bond wherewith she hath bound her
soul, and her father shall hold his peace at her: then all her vows shall
stand, and every bond wherewith she hath bound her soul shall stand.
[5] But if her father disallow her in the day that he heareth; not any of
her vows, or of her bonds wherewith she hath bound her soul, shall stand:
and the LORD shall forgive her, because her father disallowed her.
[6] And if she had at all an husband, when she vowed, or uttered ought out
of her lips, wherewith she bound her soul;
[7] And her husband heard it, and held his peace at her in the day that he
heard it: then her vows shall stand, and her bonds wherewith she bound her
soul shall stand.
[8] But if her husband disallowed her on the day that he heard it; then he
shall make her vow which she vowed, and that which she uttered with her
lips, wherewith she bound her soul, of none effect: and the LORD shall
forgive her.
[9] But every vow of a widow, and of her that is divorced, wherewith they
have bound their souls, shall stand against her.
[10] And if she vowed in her husband's house, or bound her soul by a bond
with an oath;
[11] And her husband heard it, and held his peace at her, and disallowed her
not: then all her vows shall stand, and every bond wherewith she bound her
soul shall stand.
[12] But if her husband hath utterly made them void on the day he heard
them; then whatsoever proceeded out of her lips concerning her vows, or
concerning the bond of her soul, shall not stand: her husband hath made them
void; and the LORD shall forgive her.
[13] Every vow, and every binding oath to afflict the soul, her husband may
establish it, or her husband may make it void.
[14] But if her husband altogether hold his peace at her from day to day;
then he establisheth all her vows, or all her bonds, which are upon her: he
confirmeth them, because he held his peace at her in the day that he heard
them.
[15] But if he shall any ways make them void after that he hath heard them;
then he shall bear her iniquity.
[16] These are the statutes, which the LORD commanded Moses, between a man
and his wife, between the father and his daughter, being yet in her youth in
her father's house. 

NUMBERS 31

Vengeance on the Midianites

1 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 
2 (Nu 27:13) "Avenge the children of Israel on the Midianites. 
Afterward you will be gathered to your people."
3 (Lev 26:25) Moses spoke to the people, saying, 
"Arm some of your men for war, and let them go against the Midianites 
to give the vengeance of the Lord against Midian.
 4 A thousand from each tribe, throughout all the tribes of Israel, 
you will send to the war." 
5 So there were delivered from the thousands of Israel
1000 of each tribe, 12000 armed for war. 
6 (Nu 14:44; 10:8-9) Moses sent them to the war, a thousand from each tribe, 
with Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, with the holy vessels 
and the trumpets to sound the alarm in his hand.
7 (Jdg 21:11; 1Ki 11:15-16) They waged war against the Midianites, 
as the Lord commanded Moses, and they killed every male. 
8 (Nu 25:15; Jos 13:21-22) They killed the kings of Midian, 
in addition to the rest of those who were killed: 
Evi, and Rekem, and Zur, and Hur, and Reba, 
five kings of Midian. Balaam the son of Beor they also killed with the sword. 
9 The children of Israel returned with the women of Midian and their children 
and took their livestock, and all their flocks, 
and all their wealth for plunder. 
10 They burned with fire all their cities in which 
they lived and all their camps. 
11 (Dt 20:14; Jos 8:2) They took all the plunder and all the prey 
of men and of beasts. 
12 (Nu 22:1) They brought the captives, the prey, and the plunder to Moses, 
to Eleazar the priest, to the assembly of the children of Israel, 
and to the camp on the plains of Moab, which are by Jordan across from Jericho.
13 Moses and Eleazar the priest and all the leaders of the assembly went 
to meet them outside the camp. 
14 Moses was angry with the officers of the army, with the captains 
over thousands, and captains over hundreds, who came from the battle.
15 (1Sa 15:3) Moses said to them, "Have you saved all the women alive? 
16 (2Pe 2:15; Rev 2:14) These caused the children of Israel, through 
the word of Balaam, to act unfaithfully against the Lord concerning 
the thing of Peor, and there was a plague among the assembly of the Lord. 
17 (Jdg 21:11-12) So now kill every male among the little ones, 
and kill every woman who has known a man by lying with him. 
18 (Dt 21:10-14) But keep alive for yourselves all the young girls 
who have not known a man by lying with him.
19 (Nu 5:2; 19:11-22) "And you stay outside the camp seven days. 
Whoever has killed any person and whoever has touched any slain, 
purify both yourselves and your captives on the third day 
and on the seventh day. 
20 Purify all your clothes, and all that is made of skins, 
and all work of goats' hair, and all things made of wood."
21 Eleazar the priest said to the fighting men of Israel who went 
to the battle, "This is the ordinance of the law which the Lord 
commanded Moses: 
22 Only the gold, and the silver, the bronze, the iron, the tin, 
and the lead, 
23 (Nu 19:9; 19:17) everything that can go through the fire, 
you will make it go through the fire, and it will be clean, 
but some of it will be purified with the water of purification, 
and all that cannot pass through the fire you will make go through the water. 
24 (Lev 11:25) You will wash your clothes on the seventh day, 
and you will be clean, and afterward you will come into the camp."

[1] And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

[8] And they slew the kings of Midian, beside the rest of them that were
slain; namely, Evi, and Rekem, and Zur, and Hur, and Reba, five kings of
Midian: Balaam also the son of Beor they slew with the sword.
[9] And the children of Israel took all the women of Midian captives, and
their little ones, and took the spoil of all their cattle, and all their
flocks, and all their goods.
[10] And they burnt all their cities wherein they dwelt, and all their
goodly castles, with fire.
[11] And they took all the spoil, and all the prey, both of men and of
beasts.
[12] And they brought the captives, and the prey, and the spoil, unto Moses,
and Eleazar the priest, and unto the congregation of the children of Israel,
unto the camp at the plains of Moab, which are by Jordan near Jericho.
[13] And Moses, and Eleazar the priest, and all the princes of the
congregation, went forth to meet them without the camp.
[14] And Moses was wroth with the officers of the host, with the captains
over thousands, and captains over hundreds, which came from the battle.
[15] And Moses said unto them, Have ye saved all the women alive?
[16] Behold, these caused the children of Israel, through the counsel of
Balaam, to commit trespass against the LORD in the matter of Peor, and there
was a plague among the congregation of the LORD.
[17] Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every
woman that hath known man by lying with him.
[18] But all the women children, that have not known a man by lying with
him, keep alive for yourselves.
[19] And do ye abide without the camp seven days: whosoever hath killed any
person, and whosoever hath touched any slain, purify both yourselves and
your captives on the third day, and on the seventh day.
[20] And purify all your raiment, and all that is made of skins, and all
work of goats' hair, and all things made of wood.
[21] And Eleazar the priest said unto the men of war which went to the
battle, This is the ordinance of the law which the LORD commanded Moses;
[22] Only the gold, and the silver, the brass, the iron, the tin, and the
lead,
[23] Every thing that may abide the fire, ye shall make it go through the
fire, and it shall be clean: nevertheless it shall be purified with the
water of separation: and all that abideth not the fire ye shall make go
through the water.
[24] And ye shall wash your clothes on the seventh day, and ye shall be
clean, and afterward ye shall come into the camp.

Dividing the Plunder

25 The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 
26 "Take the count of the plunder that was taken, of man and of beast, 
you and Eleazar the priest, and the chief of the fathers of the assembly. 
27 (Jos 22:8) And divide the prey into two parts between those that took 
the war on themselves, who went out to battle, and between all the assembly. 
28 (Nu 18:26; 31:30) And levy a tribute to the Lord 
from the fighting men of Israel who went out to battle: 
1 person out of 500, of the people and of the oxen, and of the donkeys, 
and of the sheep; 
29 take it from their half, and give it to Eleazar the priest 
as an offering to the Lord. 
30 (Nu 3:7-8; 3:25) Of the half of the children of Israel, you will take 
one portion of fifty, of the people, of the oxen, of the donkeys, 
and of the flocks, of all manner of beasts, and give them to the Levites, 
who keep the guard of the tabernacle of the Lord." 
31 Moses and Eleazar the priest did as the Lord commanded Moses.
32 The plunder, being the rest of the prey, which the fighting men of Israel 
had caught, was 675000 sheep, 
33 72000 oxen, 
34 and 61000 donkeys, 
35 and 32 000 people in all, of women 
who had not known a man by lying with him.
36 The half, which was the portion of those that went out to war, 
was 337500 sheep.
37 And the Lord's tribute of the sheep was 675.
38 The oxen were 36000, of which the Lord's tribute was 72.
39 The donkeys were 30500, of which the Lord's tribute was 61.
40 The people were 16000, of which the Lord's tribute was 32 people.
41 (Nu 18:8; 18:19) Moses gave the tribute which was the Lord's offering 
to Eleazar the priest, as the Lord commanded Moses.
42 Of the half of the children of Israel, 
which Moses divided from the men who fought, 
43 the half belonging to the assembly was 337500 sheep, 
44 36000 oxen, 
45 53500 donkeys, 
46 and 16000 people. 
47 (Nu 31:30) From the half of the children of Israel Moses took one out 
of fifty, of man and of beast, and gave them to the Levites, who kept 
the guard of the tabernacle of the Lord, as the Lord commanded Moses.
48 The officers who were over thousands of the army, 
the captains of thousands, and captains of hundreds, 
came near to Moses, 
49 and they said to Moses, "Your servants have taken 
the count of the fighting men of Israel who are in our hand, 
and not a man of us is missing. 
50 (Ex 30:12; 30:15-16) We have brought an offering for the Lord, 
what every man has gotten of jewels of gold, chains, and bracelets, 
rings, earrings, and pendants, to make an atonement for ourselves
before the Lord."
51 Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold from them, 
all in the form of fashioned articles. 
52 All the gold of the offering that they offered up to the Lord, 
of the captains of thousands and of the captains of hundreds, 
was sixteen thousand seven hundred and fifty shekels. 
(About 420 pounds, or 190 kilograms. )
53 (Dt 20:14) The fighting men of Israel had taken plunder, 
each man for himself. 
54 (Ex 30:16) And Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold of the captains 
of thousands and of hundreds and brought it into the tent of meeting 
as a memorial for the children of Israel before the Lord.

[25] And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
[26] Take the sum of the prey that was taken, both of man and of beast,
thou, and Eleazar the priest, and the chief fathers of the congregation:
[27] And divide the prey into two parts; between them that took the war upon
them, who went out to battle, and between all the congregation:
[28] And levy a tribute unto the LORD of the men of war which went out to
battle: one soul of five hundred, both of the persons, and of the beeves,
and of the asses, and of the sheep:
[29] Take it of their half, and give it unto Eleazar the priest, for an
heave offering of the LORD.
[30] And of the children of Israel's half, thou shalt take one portion of
fifty, of the persons, of the beeves, of the asses, and of the flocks, of
all manner of beasts, and give them unto the Levites, which keep the charge
of the tabernacle of the LORD.
[31] And Moses and Eleazar the priest did as the LORD commanded Moses.
[32] And the booty, being the rest of the prey which the men of war had
caught, was six hundred thousand and seventy thousand and five thousand
sheep,
[33] And threescore and twelve thousand beeves,
[34] And threescore and one thousand asses,
[35] And thirty and two thousand persons in all, of woman that had not known
man by lying with him.
[36] And the half, which was the portion of them that went out to war, was
in number three hundred thousand and seven and thirty thousand and five
hundred sheep:
[37] And the LORD's tribute of the sheep was six hundred and threescore and
fifteen.
[38] And the beeves were thirty and six thousand; of which the LORD's
tribute was threescore and twelve.
[39] And the asses were thirty thousand and five hundred; of which the
LORD's tribute was threescore and one.
[40] And the persons were sixteen thousand; of which the LORD's tribute was
thirty and two persons.
[41] And Moses gave the tribute, which was the LORD's heave offering, unto
Eleazar the priest, as the LORD commanded Moses.
[42] And of the children of Israel's half, which Moses divided from the men
that warred,
[43] (Now the half that pertained unto the congregation was three hundred
thousand and thirty thousand and seven thousand and five hundred sheep,
[44] And thirty and six thousand beeves,
[45] And thirty thousand asses and five hundred,
[46] And sixteen thousand persons;)
[47] Even of the children of Israel's half, Moses took one portion of fifty,
both of man and of beast, and gave them unto the Levites, which kept the
charge of the tabernacle of the LORD; as the LORD commanded Moses.
[48] And the officers which were over thousands of the host, the captains of
thousands, and captains of hundreds, came near unto Moses:
[49] And they said unto Moses, Thy servants have taken the sum of the men of
war which are under our charge, and there lacketh not one man of us.
[50] We have therefore brought an oblation for the LORD, what every man hath
gotten, of jewels of gold, chains, and bracelets, rings, earrings, and
tablets, to make an atonement for our souls before the LORD.
[51] And Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold of them, even all
wrought jewels.
[52] And all the gold of the offering that they offered up to the LORD, of
the captains of thousands, and of the captains of hundreds, was sixteen
thousand seven hundred and fifty shekels.
[53] (For the men of war had taken spoil, every man for himself.)
[54] And Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold of the captains of
thousands and of hundreds, and brought it into the tabernacle of the
congregation, for a memorial for the children of Israel before the LORD.

Ephesians 4:1-7

Unity of the Body

1 (Eph 3:1; Col 1:10) I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, exhort you to
walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you were called.
2 (Col 3:12-13; Ac 20:19) With all humility, meekness, and patience,
bearing with one another in love,
3 be eager to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
4 (Eph 1:18; 2:16) There is one body and one Spirit, even as you were called
in one hope of your calling,
5 (1Co 8:6; Mt 28:19) one Lord, one faith, one baptism,
6 (Ro 11:36; 1Co 12:6) one God and Father of all, who is above all,
and through all, and in you all.
7 (Ro 12:3; Eph 3:2) But grace was given to each one of us according
to the measure of the gift of Christ. 

[1] I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy
of the vocation wherewith ye are called,
[2] With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one
another in love;
[3] Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
[4] There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of
your calling;
[5] One Lord, one faith, one baptism,
[6] One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you
all.
[7] But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the
gift of Christ. 

In January 1967, the town of Winneconne discovered it had been mistakenly 
omitted from the official Wisconsin state road map, costing the town vital 
tourist revenue. So the town decided to secede from Wisconsin and become its 
own sovereign state on July 21 of that year. Some say the secession was a 
move to embarrass the state government, while others claim it was 
a tongue-in-cheek act of humour. In any case, months of negotiations resulted 
in state and town coming together again on July 22, 1967.

Most division isn't as good-natured or as easily resolved. Division is such a
threat that the book of Proverbs lists "the person who stirs up conflict" 
(6:19) as one of seven things "that are detestable to [God]" (v. 16). 

Division may not only cause problems but misrepresents Jesus and His Father. 
The night before the cross, Christ prayed that His followers would be one in 
Him, "that the world may believe that you have sent me" (John 17:21).

Jesus made it clear that our unity as brothers and sisters in Christ (or lack 
of it) impacts the world's belief in Him! Perhaps that's why Paul told the 
Ephesians, "Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the 
bond of peace" (Ephesians 4:3). May we allow the Spirit of Christ to make us 
one-that the world may be drawn to Him.

Week 1 Knowing God's Word Day 7 - The Cost of Wisdom

Proverbs 4:4,7

Proverbs 4

4 (Pr 7:2; Eph 6:4) He also taught me and said to me,
"Let your heart retain my words; keep my commandments, and live.
7 (Mt 13:44-46) Wisdom is principal; therefore get wisdom.
And with all your getting, get understanding. "

4 He taught me also, and said unto me,
Let thine heart retain my words:
Keep my commandments, and live.
7 Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom:
And with all thy getting get understanding.

Establishing priorities is a popular topic of conversation in our
generation. We carry appointment calendars and attend goal-setting
strategy seminars. We let machines answer our telephones so that
we won't miss any important messages, or so that we can screen calls
before we answer them. We order our lives so that we can "get ahead".
"Getting ahead" in God's kingdom, however, involves other priorities
than the ones we may set for ourselves. "Wisdom is supreme," the
principal thing, says Proverbs 4:7, "Get wisdom. Though it cost
all you have, get understanding."
Wisdom is defined as "an understanding of what is true, right, or lasting."
Biblical wisdom is not merely the accumulation of facts about God and his
teaching, but the application of those truths of life, taking on
the character of God as we mature in the image of Christ.
Such wisdom may, indeed, come at great cost. Jesus calls us to "lay
down our lives" to follow him - perhaps not literally to die, but to die
to self-centered priorities, to allow the Holy Spirit to establish
his value system in us.
"Keep my commandments and you will live," Proverbs 4:4 says. Real life -
rich, fulfilling, significant, abundant life - comes only through union
with God. The success offered by the world, the acclaim of others, material
prosperity and convenience cannot satisfy us once we have tasted
the joy of life with God in Christ.

Saskatoon has seen quick growth in its Muslim population over the past
5 years, which maybe as high as 5000 today. Islamic leaders have 
focused specifically on this city , having twice already sent cohorts
of about 70 families to start mosques. There are now 7 Islamic centres
of worship and an ISlamic madrassah (school) located right next to a 
Christian school.
Of particular concern recently is the number of young adults who grew up
in evangelical churches and converted to Islam. Most of these are young
women whowere wooed by Muslim man and became emotionally bonded. 
Both prior to and after marrying, these women are known to convert to ISlam.

Agree in prayer with us for:
- entire congregations and individual believers to catch God's heart
and passion for reaching Muslims in Saskatoon and the other growing
Muslim population centres of Saskatchewan.
- for the eyes and understanding of Canadian youth to be opened to the 
  spiritual reality of Islam, and not deceived nor manipulated into
  converting to a religion which cannot offer assurance of salvation. 
- for the few workers among Muslims now engaged there, and for many more
  to be raised up into effective witness.
- for prayer and training events that are starting in Saskatoon 
  to spread and grow to other cities.

Pray for Bangladesh</a>

   Five years ago, Rupal and his brother moved to Dhaka, the capital of
   Bangladesh, in order to find work. They found an affordable place to
   live, with five other men in a small apartment. Rupal thought that one
   roommate was different, perhaps because he came from another region.

   Aarav ("peaceful") was a peaceful person who never spoke badly about
   anyone. But eventually Rupal discovered that this man was reading the
   Injil (New Testament) regularly. Rupal tried to talk Aarav out of
   reading this book. But Aarav told him that it was different than other
   books.

   "The Injil changes you!" Aarav said. "When you read it, it seems like a
   person talking to you that knows you well."
        
   Rupal wanted to read he Injjil himself, and Aarav allowed him to borrow
   his copy. Quickly, Rupal found himself reading it more and more . And
   Aarav was proved right. The Injil did seem to change Rupal.
   
  In Matthew 5-7 he found the most beautiful things he had ever heard.
   This was the true way! Jesus taught with authority, not like other
   teachers. He showed the straight path to God, forgiving enemies and
   obeying God, not people.

   Rupal decided that he needed Jesus. Some time later, Rupal's brother
   started to follow Jesus, too. Now they are seven men following Jesus
   and reading together. They love each other and people around them. And,
   as they reach out to Bengali people, they show them that the Injil has
   not been changed, but that it is the wonderful book that changes you!
   
 How to Pray

     * Pray for Aarav, Rupal and others, to experience God's wisdom, power
       and protection.
     * Cry out in faith for the more than 135 million Bengali people who
       are among the least reached peoples worldwide.
     * Pray that the many Bible study groups among the Bengali would
       develop into churches glorifying Jesus.

My paternal side is of Muslim heritage and will offer this section to further
call for Muslim converts to Christian and any other converts to Christianity
(Hindus, Jews, aboriginals Canadian, ...) .

Eight) Day 13 - New season, crucified self, resurrected life.

Scripture: Galatians 2:20

Or by the faith of the Son of God. who loved me and gave Himself for me.

of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

I have a friend who chants to himself, "die to self, die to self," when he is 
doing something that he does not want to do for his wife. This is a humourous 
thing, but it is a true statement that Jesus calls us to in Luke 9:23: we are 
to deny ourselves, give up our own ways, pick up the cross, and follow Him.

This is dying to our old self, not just in changing our actions, but dying to 
our old identity. The context of Galatians 2:20 concerns the law and our 
inability to fulfill it and be right with God by our own actions. Our identity
is not based on our efforts to do good; it is based on Jesus Christ. 
It is trusting Christ to live through you.

Dying to ourselves is relinquishing control of our lives to Christ. It is 
accepting God's will over our personal preference, and accepting death to 
anything that is not aligned with God. This shift takes away our 
self-centeredness and our former self, who was dominated by sin, 
is now put to death. 

Our new life is now lived by faith in Christ's love and sacrifice, 
not by self-directed ambition.

This new identity in Christ can be further studied: 

2 Corinthians 5:17, 

17 (Jn 3:3; Ro 16:7) Therefore, if any man is in Christ,
he is a new creature. Old things have passed away. Look, all things have
become new.

[17] Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are
passed away; behold, all things are become new. 

John 1:12, 

12 Yet to all who received Him, He gave the power to become sons of God,
to those who believed in His name,

[12] But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the
sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
