Youth Day 2026: 50 years

Today is Youth Day in South Africa.

It commemorates events of 50 years ago when young people protested
against an inferior system of education, and many were shot by police.

Twenty years ago, on the 30th anniversary of the events, the Orthodox
Church in Gauteng held a special gathering to commemorate the
occasion, which you can read about here:

I'm not aware of any such commemoration this year, but it is worth
thinking about because the ideology that lay behind the inferior
system of education the youth were protesting against, Christian
Nationalism, is currently enjoying a revival in the USA. 

In South Africa in the 1950s and 1960s Christian Nationalism gave
birth to Christian National Education, of which Bantu Education, which
the youth were protesting against in 1976, is a subset. It was rightly
said of Christian National Education that it was neither Christian,
nor national, nor was it education. Its revival in the USA is not a
good thing.
