They did. Acts and the letters of Paul reference the early church 
was organised around communes with a divine death sentence if you

Putin backed the russian orthodox because it has resumed its 
power and oppression of the poor and dissenting. Since Putin 
doesn't like the poor and dissenting either, it makes sense for 
him to co-opt that church rather than fight with it.

Rather than co-opt that church Lenin made it a rival for power, 
and dealt with it the same way as other rivals.
