Acts 11:27-30

27 (Ac 13:1; 1Co 12:28; Ac 2:17) In these days prophets came down
from Jerusalem to Antioch.
28 (Ac 21:10; 18:2) One of them, named Agabus, stood up and prophesied
by the Spirit that there would be a great famine throughout all the world,
which came to pass in the days of Claudius Caesar.
29 Then every disciple, according to his ability, determined to send relief
to the brothers who lived in Judea.
30 (Ac 12:25; 14:23) Indeed they did, and sent it to the elders by the hands
of Barnabas and Saul. 

[27] And in these days came prophets from Jerusalem unto Antioch.
[28] And there stood up one of them named Agabus, and signified by the
spirit that there should be great dearth throughout all the world: which
came to pass in the days of Claudius Caesar.
[29] Then the disciples, every man according to his ability, determined to
send relief unto the brethren which dwelt in Judaea:
[30] Which also they did, and sent it to the elders by the hands of Barnabas
and Saul. 

1 Corinthians 14:1

1 (1Co 12:1; 14:39) Follow after love and desire spiritual gifts,
but especially that you may prophesy. 

[1] Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may
prophesy. 

A) What is prophecy?

1 Corinthians 12:8,10

8 (2Co 8:7; 1Co 1:5) To one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom,
to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit,
10 (Mk 16:17; 1Jn 4:1; 1Co 12:28-30) to another the working of miracles,
to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits,
to another various kinds of tongues,
and to another the interpretation of tongues. 

[8] For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the
word of knowledge by the same Spirit;
[10] To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another
discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the
interpretation of tongues: 

1 Corinthians 14:29

29 (1Co 12:10) Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others judge. 
[29] Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge. 

John 10:27

27 (Jn 10:14; 10:16) My sheep hear My voice, and I know them,
and they follow Me.

B) What does scriptures teach us?

1 Corinthians 12:11

11 (1Co 12:4; 2Co 10:13) But that one and very same Spirit works all these,
dividing to each one individually as He will.

[11] But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to
every man severally as he will. 

1 Thessalonians 5:19-20

19 (Eph 4:30; 1Co 14:30; 1Ti 4:14) Do not quench the Spirit.
20 (1Co 11:4; 14:1) Do not despise prophecies.

[19] Quench not the Spirit.
[20] Despise not prophesyings. 

1 Corinthians 14:1

but especially that you may prophesy.

Acts 2:17-18

17 (Isa 44:3; Ac 10:45) 'In the last days it shall be,' says God,
'that I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh;
your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
your young men shall see visions,
and your old men shall dream dreams.
18 Even on My menservants and maidservants
I will pour out My Spirit in those days;
and they shall prophesy. 

[17] And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out
of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall
prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream
dreams:
[18] And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days
of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy: 

1 Corinthians 14:20

20 (Ro 16:19; Ps 119:99) Brothers, do not be children in your thinking;
rather be infants in evil, but in your thinking be mature. 

[20] Brethren, be not children in understanding: howbeit in malice be ye
children, but in understanding be men. 

C) What is the purpose of this gift?

a) To help each other

1 Corinthians 12:7

7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given
to everyone for the common good.

[7] But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit
withal. 

1 Corinthians 14:3-4


3 (Ro 14:19; 1Co 14:12) But he who prophesies speaks to men
for their edification and exhortation and comfort.
4 (Mk 16:17; 1Co 14:3) He who speaks in an unknown tongue edifies himself,
but he who prophesies edifies the church. 


[3] But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and
exhortation, and comfort.
[4] He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that
prophesieth edifieth the church. 

b) To prepare for the future

Acts 11:27-30

27 (Ac 13:1; 1Co 12:28; Ac 2:17) In these days prophets came down

Notice the church's respond in Acts 11:29-30

c) To bring conviction of sin

1 Corinthians 14:24-25

24 But if all prophesy and there comes in one who does not believe
or one unlearned, he is convinced by all and judged by all.
25 (Isa 45:14; Zec 8:23) Thus the secrets of his heart are revealed.
And so falling down on his face, he will worship God and report that God
is truly among you. 

[24] But if all prophesy, and there come in one that believeth not, or one
unlearned, he is convinced of all, he is judged of all:
[25] And thus are the secrets of his heart made manifest; and so falling
down on his face he will worship God, and report that God is in you of a
truth. 

D) When do we need to be careful?

E)  How do we use this gift properly?

1 Corinthians 14:26,29,30,31

26 (Ro 14:19; 1Co 12:7-10) How is it then, brothers? When you come together,
every one of you has a psalm, a teaching, a tongue, a revelation,
and an interpretation. Let all things be done for edification.
29 (1Co 12:10) Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others judge.
30 (1Th 5:19-20) If anything is revealed to another that sits by,
let the first keep silent.
31 For you may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn
and all may be encouraged. 

[26] How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, everyone of you hath a
psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an
interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying.
[29] Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge.
[30] If any thing be revealed to another that sitteth by, let the first hold
his peace.
[31] For ye may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be
comforted. 

Romans 12:6

6 (Ac 13:1; 1Co 13:2) We have diverse gifts according to the grace
that is given to us: if prophecy, according to the proportion of faith;

[6] Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us,
whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith; 

1) Proverbs 22-24

Proverbs 22
1 (Ecc 7:1) A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches,
and loving favor rather than silver and gold.
2 (Job 31:15; Pr 14:31) The rich and poor have this in common,
the Lord is the maker of them all.
3 (Pr 14:16; 27:12) A prudent man foresees the evil and hides himself,
but the simple pass on and are punished.
4 (Pr 21:21) By humility and the fear of the Lord
are riches, and honor, and life.
5 (Pr 15:19; 1Jn 5:18) Thorns and snares are in the way of the perverse;
he who guards his soul will be far from them.
6 (Eph 6:4; 2Ti 3:15) Train up a child in the way he should go,
and when he is old he will not depart from it.
7 (Jas 2:6; Pr 18:23 ) The rich rules over the poor,
and the borrower is servant to the lender.
8 (Job 4:8; Ps 125:3 ) He who sows iniquity will reap vanity,
and the rod of his anger will fail.
9 (Pr 19:17; Heb 13:16 ) He who has a bountiful eye will be blessed,
for he gives of his bread to the poor.
10 (Ge 21:9-10) Cast out the scorner, and contention will go out;
yes, strife and reproach will cease.
11 (Pr 16:13; Mt 5:8) He who loves pureness of heart, for the grace of his lips
the king will be his friend.
12 The eyes of the Lord preserve knowledge,
and He overthrows the words of the transgressor.
13 The slothful man says, "There is a lion without!
I will be slain in the streets!"
14 (Pr 23:27; Ecc 7:26) The mouth of an immoral woman is a deep pit;
he who is detested by the Lord will fall therein.
15 (Pr 13:24; 19:18; 23:13-14) Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child,
but the rod of correction will drive it far from him.

Thirty Sayings of the Wise

Saying One

17 (Pr 23:12 ) Incline your ear and hear the words of the wise,
and apply your heart to my knowledge;
18 (Pr 2:10) for it is a pleasant thing if you keep them within you;
they will readily be fitted in your lips.
19 (Pr 3:5 ) That your trust may be in the Lord,
I have made known to you this day, even to you.
20 (Pr 8:6 ) Have I not written to you excellent things
in counsels and knowledge,
21 (Lk 1:3-4; 1Pe 3:15 ) that I might make you know the certainty
of the words of truth,
that you might answer the words of truth
to those who send to you?

Words of the Wise
17 Bow down thine ear, and hear the words of the wise,
And apply thine heart unto my knowledge.
18 For it is a pleasant thing if thou keep them within thee;
They shall withal be fitted in thy lips.
19 That thy trust may be in the LORD,
I have made known to thee this day, even to thee.
20 Have not I written to thee excellent things

Saying Two

22 (Ex 23:6; Zec 7:10) Do not rob the poor because he is poor,
neither oppress the afflicted in the gate;
23 (1Sa 25:39; Ps 12:5) for the Lord will plead their cause,
and spoil the soul of those who spoiled them.

Saying Three

24 (Pr 29:22) Make no friendship with an angry man,
and with a furious man you will not go,
25 (1Co 15:33) lest you learn his ways
and get a snare to your soul.

Saying Four

26 (Pr 11:15; 17:18) Do not be one of those who shakes hands in a pledge,

why should he take away your bed from under you?

Or of them that are sureties for debts.
27 If thou hast nothing to pay,
Why should he take away thy bed from under thee?

Saying Five

28 (Dt 19:14; Pr 23:10) Do not remove the ancient landmark
which your fathers have set.

29 (Ge 41:46; Pr 10:4) Do you see a man diligent in his business?
He will stand before kings;

Proverbs 23

Saying Seven

1 When you sit to eat with a ruler,
consider diligently what is before you;
2 and put a knife to your throat,
if you are a man given to appetite.
3 (Pr 23:6; Ps 141:4) Be not desirous of his delicacies,
for they are deceptive food.

Saying Nine

"Eat and drink!" he says to you,
but his heart is not with you.
8 The morsel you have eaten, you will vomit up,
and lose your sweet words.

13 (Pr 13:24; 19:18) Do not withhold correction from a child,
for if you beat him with the rod, he will not die.

Saying Fifteen

17 (Pr 28:14; 24:1) Do not let your heart envy sinners,
but continue in the fear of the Lord all day long;

and your expectation will not be cut off.

Saying Nineteen

Saying Twenty-Five

12 (Job 34:11; 1Sa 16:7) if you say, "Surely we did not know this,"
does not He who ponders the heart consider it?
And He who keeps your soul, does He not know it?
And will He not render to every man according to his works?

More Sayings of the Wise

23 (Pr 18:5; 28:21) These things also belong to the wise:

At the after-school Bible club where my wife Sue serves once a week, 
the kids were asked to donate money to help children in the war-torn
country of Ukraine. About a week after Sue told our eleven-year-old 
granddaughter Maggie about the project, we got an envelope in the mail 
from her. It contained $3.45, along with a note: 
"This is all I have for the kids in Ukraine. I'll send more later."

Sue hadn't suggested to Maggie that she should help, but perhaps 
the Spirit prompted her. And Maggie, who loves Jesus and seeks 
to live for Him, responded.

We can learn a lot as we think of this small gift from a big heart.
It mirrors some instructions about giving provided by Paul in 2 Corinthians 9.
 First, the apostle suggested that we should sow "generously" (v. 6). 
 A gift of "all I have" is certainly a generous one. Paul also wrote that our 
 gifts should be given cheerfully as God leads and as we're able, not because 
 we're "under compulsion" (v. 7). And he mentioned the value of 
 "gifts to the poor" (v. 9) by quoting Psalm 112:9.

When an opportunity to give presents itself, let's ask how God wants us 
to respond. When we’re generous and cheerful in directing our gifts to those 
in need as He leads us, we give in a way that 
"will result in thanksgiving to God" (2 Corinthians 9:11). That's big-hearted 
giving.

Week 7 Promises of Grace - Day 1 Hard Bargain

Mark 11:24

24 Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray,
believe that you will receive them, and you will have them.

24 Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray,
believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.

"I've been praying." Jennifer declared confidently. " I told God I'd give him
a tithe of that $5000000 when I win the sweepstakes."
Her friend Cindi laughed. "Well, then, you don't have a chance. I told him
I'd give him half!"
Can we, as in Mark 11:24 seems to imply , pray for anything, absolutely
anything, and expect that the Lord will come through? Can we pray with
assurance for new cars, mink coats, or trips to the Caribbean? The verse
seems to be a troublesome one, especially when we try it and our prayers
aren't answered in the way we expected.
But seen in context, Mark 11:24 gives us a much broader picture of the
kind of prayer Jesus meant. The verse appears in the framework of
Jesus' ministry - cleansing the temple, correcting the Pharisees,
commanding forgiveness, discussing his authority. The condition for
the fulfillment of Mark 11:24, if Jesus' actions are any indication,
is fulfilling the will and purpose of God.
Such a condition for powerful prayers involves much more than attaching
am "If it be Thy will" clause onto the end of our prayers. We need to know
God's will and walk in it, seeking his kingdom first, and drawing close to
him. Then , as our hearts are right with him, what we ask in prayer
is likely to be congruent with the mind and purposes of Christ. We are
less likely to pray selfishly, and more likely to share God's priorities,
as we get to know him. And as we deepen in our knowledge of him,
as his will becomes our will, his promise for answered prayer takes
on new dimensions.

There is a growing Muslim population in Quebec City and a smattering
of Muslims scattered around the rest of the province, yet the vast majority
of Muslims live in the greater Montreal area. n fact, 23% of Canada's Muslim
population live in Quebec. Why is that? It is largely because Francophone
African Muslims are attracted to La Belle Provence.
And here's an interesting, perhaps even shocking fact: There are more 
Muslims in Montreal than there are evangelical Christians. 
This is one demographic factor creates a challenging environment for churches
and believers here: The size of the available 'workforce' is small 
by comparison to begin with. Believers are already is a host culture that
is often either indifferent to religion  or resistant to it.  And now 
this 'new'  religious community of Muslims - many of whom do not visibly 
or socially conform to Quebec society - are a growing population. It might br
easy for Christians to feel overwhelm by this cultural double-whammy, 
yet God has always worked miracles through the small, the few.
Agree in prayer for :

- The people of Quebec, Muslim or otherwise, to be open to the Gospel
- for Muslims who are encountering believers and responding
-for a new group of Muslim background believers who are meeting 
together for worship!
- For pastors and believers to be full of passion, faith and vision for
  reaching Muslims in Quebec.

When the new moon is sighted it marks the beginning of t he new Islamic month
and Eid al-Fitr, the "Festival of Breaking the Fast", will start! After 30 days
of fasting, the Eid  celebration at the end of Ramadan is a joyful time that 
usually lasts about 3 days. Muslims will buy new clothes, exchange gifts and,
of course, enjoy special foods. In Muslim-majority nations, the streets may be
decorated and festivals will be held.

For many Muslims, Eid-al-Fitr begins with communal prayers at daybreak and the
distribution of money (zakat) to the poor, which is one of the 5 pillars of
Islam.

You can greet Muslim friends during this time by saying "Eid Mubarak",
which means Blessed Eid!"

Ramadan is over for this year, but you can continue to pray for Muslims you 
know, and Muslims around the world:

- Despite the unsettling developments in our world today that involve actions
in the name of Islam, there is at the same time a largely untold story about
unprecedented movement to Christ among Muslims. There have been more such
movements of thousands or more new disciples among Muslims in the last three
decades or so than in all the previous history of Christian Muslim
relationships! Pray for this momentum to continue.
Acts 2:12-17 :  17 "In the last days it shall be," says God,
"that I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh; 
your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, 
your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams.
18 Even on My menservants and maidservants 
I will pour out My Spirit in those days; and they shall prophesy. 
19 And I will show wonders in heaven above and signs on the earth below: 
blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke.  20 The sun shall be turned into darkness,
and the moon into blood, before that great and glorious day of the Lord comes.
21 And whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved."[a]
