Acts 13:1-3

Barnabas and Saul Commissioned

1 (Ac 11:22-27; 4:36) In the church that was in Antioch there were prophets
and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene,
Manaen who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.
2 (Ac 9:15; 2Ti 1:11) As they worshipped the Lord and fasted,
the Holy Spirit said, "Set apart for Me Barnabas and Saul for the work
to which I have called them."
3 (Ac 6:6; 14:26) Then after fasting and praying, they laid their hands
on them and sent them off.

[1] Now there were in the church that was at Antioch certain prophets and
teachers; as Barnabas, and Simeon that was called Niger, and Lucius of
Cyrene, and Manaen, which had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and
Saul.
[2] As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said,
Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them.
[3] And when they had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them, they
sent them away.

We can prepare ourselves to be ON MISSION  by ...

A) Walking in our spiritual gifts

Romans 12:4-8

4 (1Co 12:12-14) For just as we have many parts in one body,
and not all parts have the same function,
5 (1Co 10:17; 12:20) so we, being many, are one body in Christ,
and all are parts of one another.
6 (Ac 13:1; 1Co 13:2) We have diverse gifts according to the grace
that is given to us: if prophecy, according to the proportion of faith;
7 (Ac 13:1; Eph 4:11) if service, in serving; he who teaches, in teaching;
8 (2Co 9:7; 1Co 12:28) he who exhorts, in exhortation; he who gives,
with generosity; he who rules, with diligence; he who shows mercy,
with cheerfulness.

[4] For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the
same office:
[5] So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of
another.
[6] Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us,
whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith;
[7] Or ministry, let us wait on our ministering: or he that teacheth, on
teaching;
[8] Or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, let him do it with
simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that sheweth mercy, with
cheerfulness. 

1 Corinthians 12:4-11,27-31

Spiritual Gifts

4 (Heb 2:4; Ro 12:4-6) There are various gifts, but the same Spirit.
5 There are differences of administrations, but the same Lord.
6 (1Co 15:28) There are various operations, but it is the same God
who operates all of them in all people.
7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given
to everyone for the common good.
8 (2Co 8:7; 1Co 1:5) To one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom,
to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit,
9 (2Co 4:13; 1Co 13:2) to another faith by the same Spirit,
to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit,
10 (Mk 16:17; 1Jn 4:1; 1Co 12:28-30) to another the working of miracles,
to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits,
to another various kinds of tongues,
and to another the interpretation of tongues.
11 (1Co 12:4; 2Co 10:13) But that one and very same Spirit works all these,
dividing to each one individually as He will.
27 (Ro 12:5; Eph 1:23) Now you are the body of Christ
and members individually.
28 (Heb 13:17; 13:24) God has put these in the church:
first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, after that miracles,
then gifts of healings, helps, governments, and various tongues.
29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers?
Are all workers of miracles?
30 Do all have the gifts of healings? Do all speak with tongues?
Do all interpret?
31 (1Co 14:39)But earnestly covet the greater gifts

1 Corinthians 12

[4] Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.

[27] Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.
[28] And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily
prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings,
helps, governments, diversities of tongues.
[29] Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all workers
of miracles?
[30] Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all
interpret?
[31] But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more
excellent way. 

Ephesians 4:11-13

11 (Ac 21:8; 13:1) He gave some to be apostles, prophets, evangelists,
pastors, and teachers,
12 (1Co 12:27; Eph 1:23) for the equipping of the saints, for the work
of service, and for the building up of the body of Christ,
13 (Eph 4:5; 1:23) until we all come into the unity of the faith
and of the knowledge of the Son of God, into a complete man,
to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, 

[11] And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists;
and some, pastors and teachers;
[12] For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the
edifying of the body of Christ:
[13] Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the
Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the
fulness of Christ: 

1 Peter 4:9-11

9 (Php 2:14; 1Ti 3:2) Show hospitality to one another without complaining.
10 (1Co 4:1-2; Lk 12:42) As everyone has received a gift, even so serve one
another with it, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.
11 (Ac 7:38; 1Co 10:31) If anyone speaks, let him speak as the oracles of God.
If anyone serves, let him serve with the strength that God supplies, so that
God in all things may be glorified through ­Jesus Christ,
to whom be praise and dominion forever and ever. Amen. 

[9] Use hospitality one to another without grudging.
[10] As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to
another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.
[11] If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man
minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all
things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion
for ever and ever. Amen. 

B) Worshiping and fasting

Nehemiah 1:4

4 (Ne 2:4; Ezr 10:1) When I heard these words, I sat down and wept
and mourned for days. Then I fasted, and prayed before the God of heaven,

[4] And it came to pass, when I heard these words, that I sat down and
wept, and mourned certain days, and fasted, and prayed before the God of
heaven, 

Daniel 9:3

3 I set my face toward the Lord God to seek by prayer and supplications
with fasting and sackcloth and ashes. 

[3] And I set my face unto the Lord God, to seek by prayer and supplication,
with fasting, and sackcloth, and ashes: 

Mark 9:29

29 He said to them, "This kind cannot come out except by prayer and fasting." 

[29] And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by
prayer and fasting. 

Acts 14:23

23 (Titus 1:5; Ac 11:30; 20:32) When they had appointed elders for them
in every church, with prayer and fasting, they commended them to the Lord
in whom they believed. 

[23] And when they had ordained them elders in every church, and had prayed
with fasting, they commended them to the Lord, on whom they believed. 

Matthew 6:16-18

Teaching About Fasting

16 (Mt 6:2; Ps 35:13) "Moreover, when you fast, do not be like
the hypocrites with a sad countenance. For they disfigure their faces
so they may appear to men to be fasting. Truly I say to you,
they have their reward.
17 (Ru 3:3) But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face,
18 (Mt 6:4; 6:6) so that you will not appear to men to be fasting,
but to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret
will reward you openly. 

[16] Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance:
for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast.
Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
[17] But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face;
[18] That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in
secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly. 

C)  Keeping in step with the Holy Spirit

Galatians 5:25

25 (Gal 5:16) If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. 

[25] If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. 

Acts 1:8

8 (Mt 28:19; Mk 16:15) But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit
comes upon you. And you shall be My witnesses in Jerusalem,
and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." 

[8] But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon
you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all
Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. 

Luke 16:10

10 (Mt 25:21; Lk 19:17) "He who is faithful in what is least is faithful
also in much. And he who is dishonest in the least is dishonest also in much. "

[10] He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much:
and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much. 

1) Obadiah , Psalms 82, 83

Obadiah 1
Obadiah
The book of Obadiah was likely written in the sixth century BC.
Its author is the prophet Obadiah, and it is the shortest book
in the Old Testament. Nothing is known about the prophet Obadiah
except the meaning of his name, "servant or worshipper of God."
This book has one theme-the condemnation of Edom.
Obadiah prophesied that Edom would be repaid for mistreating
God's people as this people (who were descendants from Esau)
took part in the sacking of Jerusalem with the Babylonians.
Obadiah emphasized that God is sovereign over all nations a
nd that the house of Jacob would someday be restored
because of God's covenant love for His people.
Judgment on Edom

Jer 49:9-16
The vision of Obadiah.
1 Thus says the Lord God concerning Edom
(We have heard a report from the Lord
and a messenger has been sent among the nations, saying:
"Rise up! Let us rise up against it for battle!"):
2 See, I will make you small among the nations;
you will be greatly despised.
3 The pride of your heart has deceived you,
you who live in the clefts of the rock,
whose dwelling is high;
you say in your heart,
"Who will bring me down to the ground?"
4 Though you ascend high like the eagle,
and though you set your nest among the stars,
I will bring you down from there,
says the Lord.
5 If thieves came to you,
if robbers by night-
how you have been destroyed!-
would they not steal only what they want?
If grape gatherers come to you,
would they not leave gleanings?
6 How the things of Esau have been ransacked!
How his hidden treasures hunted out!
7 All your confederates have driven you to the border;
your allies have deceived and prevailed against you.
Those who eat your bread have set a trap for you.
You will not detect it.
8 On that day, says the Lord,
I will destroy the wise out of Edom,
and understanding out of Mount Esau.
9 Your mighty men shall be shattered, OTeman,
so that everyone from Mount Esau will be cut off.

[1] The vision of Obadiah. Thus saith the Lord GOD concerning Edom; We have
heard a rumour from the LORD, and an ambassador is sent among the heathen,
Arise ye, and let us rise up against her in battle.
[2] Behold, I have made thee small among the heathen: thou art greatly
despised.
[3] The pride of thine heart hath deceived thee, thou that dwellest in the
clefts of the rock, whose habitation is high; that saith in his heart, Who
shall bring me down to the ground?
[4] Though thou exalt thyself as the eagle, and though thou set thy nest
among the stars, thence will I bring thee down, saith the LORD.
[5] If thieves came to thee, if robbers by night, (how art thou cut off!)
would they not have stolen till they had enough? if the grapegatherers came
to thee, would they not leave some grapes?
[6] How are the things of Esau searched out! how are his hidden things
sought up!
[7] All the men of thy confederacy have brought thee even to the border: the
men that were at peace with thee have deceived thee, and prevailed against
thee; they that eat thy bread have laid a wound under thee: there is none
understanding in him.
[8] Shall I not in that day, saith the LORD, even destroy the wise men out
of Edom, and understanding out of the mount of Esau?
[9] And thy mighty men, O Teman, shall be dismayed, to the end that every
one of the mount of Esau may be cut off by slaughter.
Edom's Violence Against Jacob

10 For the slaughter and the violence done to your brother Jacob,
shame shall cover you,
and you shall be cut off forever.
11 On the day that you stood aside,
on the day that strangers carried off his wealth,
and foreigners entered his gates
and cast lots on Jerusalem,
you also were like one of them.
12 But you should not have gloated
on the day of your brother,
on the day of his misfortune;
you should not have rejoiced over the children of Judah
on the day of their destruction;
you should not have boasted
on the day of distress.
13 You should not have entered the gate of My people
on the day of their calamity.
You should not have gloated over the disaster of Judah [Heb. his.]
on the day of his calamity;
you should not have seized his wealth
on the day of his calamity.
14 You should not have stood at the crossroads
to cut off his fugitives;
you should not have handed over his survivors,
on the day of distress.

[10] For thy violence against thy brother Jacob shame shall cover thee, and
thou shalt be cut off for ever.
[11] In the day that thou stoodest on the other side, in the day that the
strangers carried away captive his forces, and foreigners entered into his
gates, and cast lots upon Jerusalem, even thou wast as one of them.
[12] But thou shouldest not have looked on the day of thy brother in the day
that he became a stranger; neither shouldest thou have rejoiced over the
children of Judah in the day of their destruction; neither shouldest thou
have spoken proudly in the day of distress.
[13] Thou shouldest not have entered into the gate of my people in the day
of their calamity; yea, thou shouldest not have looked on their affliction
in the day of their calamity, nor have laid hands on their substance in the
day of their calamity;
[14] Neither shouldest thou have stood in the crossway, to cut off those of
his that did escape; neither shouldest thou have delivered up those of his
that did remain in the day of distress.

The Day of the Lord Is Near

15 For the day of the Lord is near
upon all the nations;
as you have done, it shall be done to you;
your deeds shall return on your own head.
16 For as you have drunk on My holy mountain,
all the nations shall drink continually;
they shall drink and swallow
and shall be as though they had never been.
17 But on Mount Zion there shall be deliverance,
and it shall be holy;
and the house of Jacob shall possess
those who dispossessed them.Gk.; Heb. their possessions.
18 The house of Jacob shall be a fire,
the house of Joseph a flame,
but the house of Esau stubble;
they shall burn them and consume them,
and there shall be no survivors
from the house of Esau,
for the Lord has spoken.

[15] For the day of the LORD is near upon all the heathen: as thou hast
done, it shall be done unto thee: thy reward shall return upon thine own
head.
[16] For as ye have drunk upon my holy mountain, so shall all the heathen
drink continually, yea, they shall drink, and they shall swallow down, and
they shall be as though they had not been.
[17] But upon mount Zion shall be deliverance, and there shall be holiness;
and the house of Jacob shall possess their possessions.
[18] And the house of Jacob shall be a fire, and the house of Joseph a
flame, and the house of Esau for stubble, and they shall kindle in them, and
devour them; and there shall not be any remaining of the house of Esau; for
the LORD hath spoken it.

The Restoration of Israel

19 Those of the Negev shall possess
Mount Esau,
and those of the Shephelah the land
of the Philistines.
They shall possess the fields of Ephraim and the fields of Samaria,
and Benjamin shall possess Gilead.
20 The exiles of this army of the sons of Israel,
shall inherit the land of the Canaanites as far as Zarephath,
and the exiles of Jerusalem who are in Sepharad
shall inherit the cities of the Negev.
21 Saviours shall go up to Mount Zion
to rule Mount Esau,
and the kingdom shall be the Lord's.

[19] And they of the south shall possess the mount of Esau; and they of the
plain the Philistines: and they shall possess the fields of Ephraim, and the
fields of Samaria: and Benjamin shall possess Gilead.
[20] And the captivity of this host of the children of Israel shall possess
that of the Canaanites, even unto Zarephath; and the captivity of Jerusalem,
which is in Sepharad, shall possess the cities of the south.
[21] And saviours shall come up on mount Zion to judge the mount of Esau;
and the kingdom shall be the LORD's.

Psalms 82
A Psalm of Asaph.
1 God stands among the divine council;
He renders judgment among the gods.
2 (Ps 63:1; 84:2 ) "How long will you all judge unjustly
and accept partiality of the wicked? Selah
3 (Ps 79:10; 80:5) Defend the poor and fatherless;
vindicate the afflicted and needy.
4 (Isa 30:29; Ps 62:8) Grant escape to the abused and the destitute,
pluck them out of the hand of the false.
5 (Ps 42:11; 43:5) "They have neither knowledge nor understanding;
they walk in darkness:
all the foundations of the earth are shaken."

sons of the Most High, all of you,

18 that they may know that You, whose name alone is the Lord,
are the Most High over all the earth.

John 21:15-22

Jesus and Peter

15 (Mt 26:33; Mk 14:29) So when they had eaten breakfast, Jesus said
to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of John, do you love Me more than these?"
He said to Him, "Yes, Lord. You know that I love You."
He said to him, "Feed My lambs."
16 (Ac 20:28; 1Pe 5:2) He said to him again a second time,
"Simon, son of John, do you love Me?"
He said to Him, "Yes, Lord. You know that I love You."
He said to him, "Tend My sheep."
17 (Jn 13:38; 16:30) He said to him the third time,
"Simon, son of John, do you love Me?"
Peter was grieved because He asked him the third time, "Do you love Me?"
He said to Him, "Lord, You know everything. You know that I love You."
Jesus said to him, "Feed My sheep.
18 (Jn 13:36) Truly, truly I say to you, when you were young,
you dressed yourself and walked where you desired.
But when you are old, you will stretch out your hands,
and another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go."
19 (2Pe 1:14; Jn 21:22) He said this, signifying by what kind of death
he would glorify God. When He had said this, He said to him, "Follow Me."

[15] So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of
Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou
knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs.
[16] He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou
me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith
unto him, Feed my sheep.
[17] He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me?
Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me?
And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I
love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.
[18] Verily, verily, I say unto thee, When thou wast young, thou girdedst
thyself, and walkedst whither thou wouldest: but when thou shalt be old,
thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall gird thee, and carry
thee whither thou wouldest not.
[19] This spake he, signifying by what death he should glorify God. And when
he had spoken this, he saith unto him, Follow me.

Jesus and the Beloved Disciple

20 (Jn 21:7; 20:2) Peter turned and saw following them the disciple
whom Jesus loved, who also leaned against His bosom at the supper
and had said, "Lord, who is it that is going to betray You?"
21 (Ac 1:6-7) When Peter saw him, he said to ­Jesus,
"Lord, what about this man?"
22 (1Co 4:5; Rev 2:25) Jesus said to him, "If it is My will that
he remain until I come, what is that to you? Follow Me!" 

[20] Then Peter, turning about, seeth the disciple whom Jesus loved
following; which also leaned on his breast at supper, and said, Lord, which
is he that betrayeth thee?
[21] Peter seeing him saith to Jesus, Lord, and what shall this man do?
[22] Jesus saith unto him, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that
to thee? follow thou me. 

"Why do I get a strawberry lollipop when she has grape?" my six-year-old 
niece asked. My nieces and nephew taught me early on that children often 
compare what they're given with what others receive. This means that as 
the doting aunt, I'd better exercise good judgment!

I too sometimes compare the things God gives me with those He's given others.
"Why do I have this, and she has that?" I ask God. My question reminds me of 
what Simon Peter asked Jesus by the Sea of Galilee. Jesus had just given 
restoration and forgiveness to Peter for his previous denial of Him and 
was now telling him that he'd glorify God by dying a martyr's death 
(John 21:15-19). Instead of answering yes to Jesus' invitation to follow Him, 
however, Peter asked, "Lord, what about [John]?" (v. 21).

Jesus answered, "What is that to you?" and added, "You must follow me" 
(v. 22). I believe Jesus would say the same to us. When He's already 
given us direction in an area in our life, He desires our trust. 
We're not to compare our path with that of others, but we're to simply 
follow Him.

For more than thirty years, the apostle Peter followed God as 
a courageous leader of the early church. Historical records also 
show that he fearlessly embraced death under the evil Emperor Nero. 
May we too be steadfast and unquestioning in following God, 
trusting His love and direction.

Week 2 - Saved by Grace - Day 1 - Sin Universal

Romans 3:23-24

A distinguished middle-aged man stood trembling before his church
to give his testimony. Years before, in the grip of a mental illness
that nearly destroyed his life, he had taken the life of his own daughter
and tried to kill himself. But he did not die; tried and convicted, he
spent years in prison, and even longer in the prison of his own guilt.
After the service, a young woman walked up to him and simply said,
"Thank you for sharing. I've sinned, too."
We've all sinned, too - lest we forget or rationalise, the Bible reminds
us in no uncertain terms. And the writer of these verses was no stranger
to sin: he was the Pharisee, the holier-than-thou religious leader
who officiated at the stoning death of Stephen. He was the Jew who had
scattered and killed the followers of this heretic called Christ. He
thought he was righteous while he murdered God's people.
Christians tends to establish a "hierarchy" of sin - sexual sin is "worse"
than pride: murder is "more horrible" than slander. Yet the Bible gives
no indication that god acknowledges our hierarchy. Sin is sin; all have
sinned, and if we are guilty at one point, we are guilty of all.
Rather than rationalise our individual sins as being "less bad"
than someone else's, we need to openly confess our dilemma as sinners
and turn to God for his remedy. We cannot and do not need to earn or
deserve that grace - it is a gift from God.

Application

a) Have I ever compared my sin with someone else's in order
to make myself fell like a better person? Why is such
comparison not a valid remedy for sin?

b) Why do I need to acknowledge my sin honestly before I can
receive justification?

There is a growing Muslim population in Quebec City and a smattering
of Muslims scattered around the rest of the province, yet the vast majority
of Muslims live in the greater Montreal area. n fact, 23% of Canada's Muslim
population live in Quebec. Why is that? It is largely because Francophone
African Muslims are attracted to La Belle Provence.
And here's an interesting, perhaps even shocking fact: There are more 
Muslims in Montreal than there are evangelical Christians. 
This is one demographic factor creates a challenging environment for churches
and believers here: The size of the available 'workforce' is small 
by comparison to begin with. Believers are already is a host culture that
is often either indifferent to religion  or resistant to it.  And now 
this 'new'  religious community of Muslims - many of whom do not visibly 
or socially conform to Quebec society - are a growing population. It might br
easy for Christians to feel overwhelm by this cultural double-whammy, 
yet God has always worked miracles through the small, the few.
Agree in prayer for :

- The people of Quebec, Muslim or otherwise, to be open to the Gospel
- for Muslims who are encountering believers and responding
-for a new group of Muslim background believers who are meeting 
together for worship!
- For pastors and believers to be full of passion, faith and vision for
  reaching Muslims in Quebec.

When the new moon is sighted it marks the beginning of t he new Islamic month
and Eid al-Fitr, the "Festival of Breaking the Fast", will start! After 30 days
of fasting, the Eid  celebration at the end of Ramadan is a joyful time that 
usually lasts about 3 days. Muslims will buy new clothes, exchange gifts and,
of course, enjoy special foods. In Muslim-majority nations, the streets may be
decorated and festivals will be held.

For many Muslims, Eid-al-Fitr begins with communal prayers at daybreak and the
distribution of money (zakat) to the poor, which is one of the 5 pillars of
Islam.

You can greet Muslim friends during this time by saying "Eid Mubarak",
which means Blessed Eid!"

Ramadan is over for this year, but you can continue to pray for Muslims you 
know, and Muslims around the world:

- Despite the unsettling developments in our world today that involve actions
in the name of Islam, there is at the same time a largely untold story about
unprecedented movement to Christ among Muslims. There have been more such
movements of thousands or more new disciples among Muslims in the last three
decades or so than in all the previous history of Christian Muslim
relationships! Pray for this momentum to continue.
Acts 2:12-17 :  17 "In the last days it shall be," says God,
"that I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh; 
your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, 
your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams.
18 Even on My menservants and maidservants 
I will pour out My Spirit in those days; and they shall prophesy. 
19 And I will show wonders in heaven above and signs on the earth below: 
blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke.  20 The sun shall be turned into darkness,
and the moon into blood, before that great and glorious day of the Lord comes.

"My name is Kam. I'm 29 years of age, and I grew up Sikh. As a teenager, 
I struggled with depression, brokenness, and addiction to
cannabis. I didn't know how to stop or how to get help.

by Jesus Christ.

Pray to the Lord and pray to not to lay treasure for yourself.

Pray to the Lord and pray as the Lord for patience when you are impatient.
