Luke 5:1-11

The Calling of the First Disciples

Mt 4:18-22; Mk 1:16-20

1 (Nu 34:11; Jos 12:3) As the people pressed upon Him to hear
the word of God, He stood by the Lake of Gennesaret
2 (Mk 1:19; Mt 4:21) and saw two boats beside the lake.
But the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets.
3 He entered one of the boats, which was Simon's, and asked him
to thrust it out a little from the land.
Then He sat down and taught the people from the boat.
4 (Jn 21:6) When He had finished speaking, He said to Simon,
"Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch."
5 (Jn 21:3) Simon answered Him, "Master, we have worked all night
and have caught nothing. But at Your word I will let down the net."
6 When they had done this, they caught a great number of fish,
and their net was tearing.
7 So they signaled to their partners in the other boat to come
and help them. And they came and filled both boats, so that
they began to sink.
8 (Isa 6:5) When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees,
saying, "Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord."
9 For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch
of fish which they had taken,
10 and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee,
who were partners with Simon.
Then Jesus said to Simon, "Do not fear. From now on you will catch men."
11 (Mt 4:20; 19:27) So when they had brought their boats to land,
they left everything and followed Him.

Mark 1:40-45

The Cleansing of a Leper

Mt 8:1-4; Lk 5:12-16

40 (Mk 10:17; Mt 8:2-4) A leper came to Him, pleading with Him
and kneeling before Him, saying, "If You are willing, You can make me clean."
41 Then Jesus, moved with compassion, extended His hand and touched him,
and said to him, "I will. Be clean."
42 As soon as He had spoken, the leprosy immediately departed from him,
and he was cleansed.
43 (Mt 9:30) He sternly warned him, and sent him away at once,
44 (Mt 8:4; Lk 17:14)saying, "See that you say nothing to anyone.
But go your way, show yourself to the priest, and offer for your cleansing
what Moses commanded, as a testimony to them."
45 (Mk 2:13; Mt 9:31) Instead he went out and began to proclaim it widely
and to spread the news around, so that Jesus could no more openly
enter the city, but was out in remote places.
And they came to Him from every quarter. 

[40] And there came a leper to him, beseeching him, and kneeling down to
him, and saying unto him, If thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.
[41] And Jesus, moved with compassion, put forth his hand, and touched him,
and saith unto him, I will; be thou clean.
[42] And as soon as he had spoken, immediately the leprosy departed from

[43] And he straitly charged him, and forthwith sent him away;
[44] And saith unto him, See thou say nothing to any man: but go thy way,

[45] But he went out, and began to publish it much, and to blaze abroad the
matter, insomuch that Jesus could no more openly enter into the city, but
was without in desert places: and they came to him from every quarter. 

Matthew 8:1-4

The Cleansing of a Leper

1 When He came down from the mountains, large crowds followed Him.
2 (Mt 18:26; 15:25) And then a leper came and worshipped Him, saying,
"Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean."
3 Jesus reached out His hand and touched him, saying, "I will. Be clean."
And immediately his leprosy was cleansed.
4 (Lev 14:2-32; Mt 9:30) Then Jesus said to him, "See that you tell no one.
But go your way, show yourself to the priest,
and offer the gift that Moses commanded as a testimony to them."

The Cleansing of a Leper

12 (Mt 8:2-4; 9:28) When He was in a certain city, a man full of leprosy,
upon seeing Jesus, fell on his face and begged Him,
"Lord, if You will, You can make me clean."
13 He reached out His hand and touched him, saying, "I will. Be clean."
And immediately the leprosy left him.
14 (Lev 14:2-32; Mt 8:4) Then He commanded him to tell no one,
"But go and show yourself to the priest and make an offering
for your cleansing, as Moses commanded, as a testimony to them."
15 (Mt 9:26) Yet even more so His fame went everywhere.
And great crowds came together to hear and to be healed by Him
of their infirmities.
16 (Mt 14:23; Lk 6:12) But He withdrew to the wilderness and prayed. 

[12] And it came to pass, when he was in a certain city, behold a man full
of leprosy: who seeing Jesus fell on his face, and besought him, saying,

Mark 2:1-12

The Healing of a Paralytic

Mt 9:1-8; Lk 5:17-26

1 (Mt 9:1) Again, He entered Capernaum after some days.
And it was reported that He was in the house.
2 (Mk 1:45; 2:13) Immediately many were gathered together,
so that there was no room to receive them, not even at the door.
And He preached the word to them.
3 (Lk 5:18-26) They came to Him bringing one sick with paralysis,
who was carried by four men.
4 (Lk 5:19) When they could not come near Him due to the crowding,
they uncovered the roof where He was. When they had broken it open,
they let down the bed on which the paralytic lay.
5 (Mt 9:2; 9:22) When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic,
"Son, your sins are forgiven you."
6 But some of the scribes were sitting there, reasoning in their hearts,
7 (Isa 43:25; Mk 14:64; Jn 10:36) "Why does this Man speak such blasphemies?
Who can forgive sins but God alone?"
8 Immediately, when Jesus perceived in His spirit that they so reasoned
within themselves, He said to them, "Why do you contemplate these things
in your hearts?
9 Which is easier to say to the paralytic: 'Your sins are forgiven you,'
or to say, 'Rise, take up your bed and walk'?
10 But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth
to forgive sins," He said to the paralytic,
11 "I say to you, rise, and take up your bed, and go your way to your house."
12 (Mt 9:8; 9:33) Immediately he rose, picked up the bed, and went out
in front of them all, so that they were all amazed and glorified God,
saying, "We never saw anything like this!"

[6] But there were certain of the scribes sitting there, and reasoning in
their hearts,
[7] Why doth this man thus speak blasphemies? who can forgive sins but God
only?
[8] And immediately when Jesus perceived in his spirit that they so reasoned
within themselves, he said unto them, Why reason ye these things in your
hearts?
[9] Whether is it easier to say to the sick of the palsy, Thy sins be
forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and take up thy bed, and walk?
[10] But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive
sins, (he saith to the sick of the palsy,)
[11] I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy bed, and go thy way into thine
house.
[12] And immediately he arose, took up the bed, and went forth before them
all; insomuch that they were all amazed, and glorified God, saying, We never
saw it on this fashion. 

Matthew 9:1-8

The Healing of a Paralytic

Mk 2:1-12; Lk 5:17-26

1 (Mt 4:13; Mk 5:21) He entered a boat, crossed over,
and came into His own city.
2 (Mt 9:22; 4:24; 8:10) They brought to Him a man sick with paralysis,
lying on a bed. And Jesus, seeing their faith, said to the paralytic,
"Son, be of good cheer. Your sins are forgiven you."
3 (Mt 26:65) Then certain scribes said within themselves,
"This Man blasphemes."
4 (Mt 12:25; Lk 6:8) Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, "Why do you
think evil in your hearts?
5 For which is easier, to say, 'Your sins are
forgiven you' or to say, 'Arise and walk'?
6 But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth
to forgive sins" then He said to the paralytic, "Arise, pick up your bed,
and go into your house."
7 And he rose and departed to his house.
8 (Mt 15:31; Lk 7:16; 17:15) But when the crowds saw it,
they were amazed and glorified God who had given such authority to men.

[1] And he entered into a ship, and passed over, and came into his own city.
[2] And, behold, they brought to him a man sick of the palsy, lying on a
bed: and Jesus seeing their faith said unto the sick of the palsy; Son, be
of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee.
[3] And, behold, certain of the scribes said within themselves, This man
blasphemeth.
[4] And Jesus knowing their thoughts said, Wherefore think ye evil in your
hearts?
[5] For whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say,
Arise, and walk?
[6] But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive
sins, (then saith he to the sick of the palsy,) Arise, take up thy bed, and
go unto thine house.

Luke 5:17-26

The Healing of a Paralytic

17 (Mt 15:1; Lk 6:19) On a certain day, as He was teaching,
Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting nearby,
who had come from every town of Galilee and Judea
and from Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was present
to heal the sick.
18 (Mt 9:2-8; Mk 2:3-12) Now some men brought in a bed
a man who was paralyzed. They searched for ways to bring him
in and lay him before Him.
19 (Mk 2:4; Dt 22:8) When they could not find a way to bring
him in, because of the crowd, they went up on the roof
and let him down through the tiles with his bed into their midst
before Jesus.
20 (Lk 7:48; Mt 9:2) When He saw their faith, He said to him,
"Man, your sins are forgiven you."
21 (Isa 43:25; Ps 32:5) The scribes and the Pharisees began
to question, "Who is He who speaks blasphemies?

The Calling of Levi

13 (Mk 1:45) He went out again by the seaside, and the whole crowd came
to Him, and He taught them.
14 (Mk 3:18) As He passed by, He saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting
at the tax collector's station, and He said to him, "Follow Me."
And he rose and followed Him.
15 As Jesus was at supper in his house, many tax collectors
and sinners also sat together with Jesus and His disciples.
For there were many, and they followed Him.
16 (Ac 23:9) When the scribes and Pharisees saw Him eating with tax collectors
and sinners, they said to His disciples, "How is it that He eats
and drinks with tax collectors and sinners?"
17 (Mt 9:12-13; Lk 5:31-32) When Jesus heard it, He said to them,
"Those who are well have no need of a physician,
but those who are sick. I came not to call the righteous,
but sinners to repentance."

at the tax collector's station. And He said to him, "Follow Me."
And he rose and followed Him.

11 (Mt 11:19; Lk 5:30) When the Pharisees saw it, they said to His disciples,
"Why does your Teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?"
12 (Mk 2:17; Lk 5:31) But when Jesus heard that, He said to them,
"Those who are well do not need a physician, but those who are sick.
13 (Hos 6:6; Mt 12:7) But go and learn what this means,
'I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.'Hos 6:6.
For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance." 

[9] And as Jesus passed forth from thence, he saw a man, named Matthew,
sitting at the receipt of custom: and he saith unto him, Follow me. And he
arose, and followed him.

The Calling of Levi

27 After these things He went out and saw a tax collector, named Levi,
sitting at the tax collector's station. He said to him, "Follow Me."
28 (Lk 5:11) And he left everything, rose up, and followed Him.
29 (Lk 15:1) Then Levi made Him a great feast in his house.
And there was a group of many tax collectors and others who sat down
with them.
30 (Ac 23:9) But their scribes and Pharisees murmured
against His disciples, saying,
"Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?"
31 (Mt 9:12-13; Mk 2:17) Jesus answered them,
"Those who are well do not need a physician, but those who are sick.
32 (Lk 15:7; 15:10) I have not come to call the righteous,
but sinners to repentance." 

[27] And after these things he went forth, and saw a publican, named Levi,
sitting at the receipt of custom: and he said unto him, Follow me.
[28] And he left all, rose up, and followed him.
[29] And Levi made him a great feast in his own house: and there was a great
company of publicans and of others that sat down with them.
[30] But their scribes and Pharisees murmured against his disciples, saying,
Why do ye eat and drink with publicans and sinners?
[31] And Jesus answering said unto them, They that are whole need not a
physician; but they that are sick.
[32] I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. 

Mark 2:18-22

The Question About Fasting

18 (Mt 6:16; 6:18) Now the disciples of John and of the Pharisees
were fasting. And people came and said to Him,
"Why do the disciples of John and of the Pharisees fast,
but Your disciples do not fast?"
19 Jesus said to them, "Can the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom
is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast.
20 (Lk 17:22) But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken
away from them, and then they will fast in those days.
21 "No one sews a piece of new cloth on an old garment, or else the new piece
that covered it tears away from the old, and the tear is made worse.
22 (Jos 9:4) And no one pours new wine into old wineskins,
or else the new wine bursts the wineskins, and the wine is spilled,
and the wineskins will be marred.
But new wine must be poured into new wineskins." 

[18] And the disciples of John and of the Pharisees used to fast: and they
come and say unto him, Why do the disciples of John and of the Pharisees
fast, but thy disciples fast not?
[19] And Jesus said unto them, Can the children of the bridechamber fast,
while the bridegroom is with them? as long as they have the bridegroom with
them, they cannot fast.
[20] But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from
them, and then shall they fast in those days.
[21] No man also seweth a piece of new cloth on an old garment: else the new
piece that filled it up taketh away from the old, and the rent is made
worse.
[22] And no man putteth new wine into old bottles: else the new wine doth
burst the bottles, and the wine is spilled, and the bottles will be marred:
but new wine must be put into new bottles.

mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? But the days will come
when the bridegroom will be taken from them, and then they will fast.
16 "No one sews a piece of new cloth into an old garment, for that
which is sewn in to fill it up pulls on the garment,
and the tear is made worse.
17 (Jos 9:4) Neither do men put new wine into old wineskins.
Or else the wineskins burst, the wine runs out, and the wineskins perish.
But they put new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved." 

[14] Then came to him the disciples of John, saying, Why do we and the
Pharisees fast oft, but thy disciples fast not?

will be taken away from them. Then in those days they will fast."

Galatians 5:13-26

Overcoming the World

Christian Freedom

13 (1Co 8:9; 9:19) You, brothers, have been called to liberty.
Only do not use liberty to give an opportunity to the flesh,
but by love serve one another.
14 (Lev 19:18; Mt 7:12; 19:18-19) For the entire law is fulfilled
in one word, even in this: "You shall love your neighbor as yourself."
(Lev 19:18.)
15 But if you bite and devour one another, take heed that
you are not consumed by one another.

[13] For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty
for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.
[14] For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love
thy neighbour as thyself.
[15] But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not
consumed one of another.

Spiritual Fruit and Fleshly Works

16 (Eph 2:3; Ro 8:4-5) I say then, walk in the Spirit,
and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.
17 (Ro 8:5-8; 8:13) For the flesh lusts against the Spirit,
and the Spirit against the flesh. These are in opposition
to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please.
18 (Ro 8:14) But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

which are these: adultery, sexual immorality, impurity, lewdness,
20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, strife, jealousy,
rage, selfishness, dissensions, heresies,

Following a challenging tour in Afghanistan, Scott, a sergeant in the British 
Army, fell apart. He remembered: "I was in a dark place." But when he 
"discovered Jesus and began following Him," his life changed radically. Now he
seeks to share the love of Christ with others, especially veterans with whom 
he competes in the Invictus Games, an international event for wounded 
and injured members and veterans of the armed forces.

For Scott, reading the Bible, praying, and listening to worship music grounds
him before going to the Games. God then helps him "to reflect the character of
Jesus and show kindness, gentleness, and grace" to the fellow veterans 
competing there.

Scott names here some of the fruit of the Spirit that the apostle Paul wrote 
about to the believers in Galatia. They struggled under the influence of false
teachers, so Paul sought to encourage them to stay true to God and His grace, 
being "led by the Spirit" (Galatians 5:18). By doing so, they would then 
produce the Spirit's fruit-"love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness,
faithfulness, gentleness and self-control" (vv. 22-23).

With God's Spirit living within us, we too will burst forth with the Spirit's
goodness and love. We too will show gentleness and kindness to those who 
surround us.

Week 7 Promises of Grace - Day 4 - Giving and Receiving

Luke 6:38

38 "Give, and it will be given to you: Good measure, pressed down,
shaken together, and running over will men give unto you.
For with the measure you use, it will be measured unto you."

38 give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down,
and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom.
For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured
to you again.

"Just give the Lord", the voice on the radio declared. "Give, and he will
give back to you, a hundredfold." The preacher went on to explain how
an old woman on social security had sent her last $10 to support his
ministry, and the next day she got an anonymous money order for
a $1000 . "The Lord will be faithful to his Word," the preacher
concluded. "You give, and you'll receive."
The Lord is, of course, faithful to his Word. But many well-meaning Christians
have interpreted Luke 6:38 as a "payment in kind" bargain with God:
if I give God my dollar, he's obliged to return it to me with interest.
This "seed-sowing" fallacy, where $20 supposedly becomes $2000 by
an act of divine, multiplication, has caused much
disappointment and frustration.
The "giving and receiving" principle is a valid one; the Lord does, indeed say
"Give, and it will be given to you," but he does not specify what the "return"
will be. The verse appears in the context of forgiveness, of not judging; the
principle is not investment, in any material sense, but generosity.
As we give, as few are compassionate with others, we take on the
character of the Lord himself. He is generous and giving, and he gives
to us as we give ourselves in love to others.

Application

a) Have I ever "given" to God to others as a bribe, to get something
in return?

b) What is God's concept of giving, as demonstrated
in the gift of Jesus Christ?

c) How can this verse help me to give more selflessly?

Charlottetown does not currently (fall 2014) have a local CNMM network.
Pray with us for God's people to come together in reaching Muslims
cooperatively across denominational and organisational lines.

More than 200 attended the Eid festival at the end of Ramadan, the Islamic
month of fasting during daylight hours and the reading of the Qur'an, at
the Dar as-Salam mosque in 2014. This second mosque established
in Charlottetown, the other being the Muslims Association of PEI.
As of mid-2014,there are between 250 to 300 families, mostly in Charlottetown.

The Muslims of Charlottetown see their community as symbolically important
for this nation since this is known as the "birthplace of Canada". Yet we were
established as the "Dominion of Canada" with an appeal not only to
monarchial authority, but even more to God's higher Biblical authority as
shown in Psalm 72:8, "May he have dominion from sea to sea,
and from the River to the ends of the earth."
Let us intercede together for:

- the growing Muslim population of Charlottetown and spreading
outward through PEI to encounter the Prince of Peace.
- believers to have faith and vision to reach out to the Muslim Community
in contextual ways to share the Gospel
- churches and ministries to rise up in wisdom, knowledge and understanding,
giving and training, coaching and encouragement to believers reaching
out to Muslims locally.
- a prayer movement to be established, feeding a growing move of Yahweh's
Spirit in His churches and people , and an awakening an openness
and spiritual hunger in Muslims for relationship with the Father
through the Son.

When the new moon is sighted it marks the beginning of t he new Islamic month
and Eid al-Fitr, the "Festival of Breaking the Fast", will start! After 30 days
of fasting, the Eid celebration at the end of Ramadan is a joyful time that
usually lasts about 3 days. Muslims will buy new clothes, exchange gifts and,
of course, enjoy special foods. In Muslim-majority nations, the streets may be
decorated and festivals will be held.
For many Muslims, Eid-al-Fitr begins with communal prayers at daybreak and the
distribution of money (zakat) to the poor, which is one of the 5 pillars of
Islam.
You can greet Muslim friends during this time by saying "Eid Mubarak",
which means Blessed Eid!"
Ramadan is over for this year, but you can continue to pray for Muslims you
know, and Muslims around the world:
- Despite the unsettling developments in our world today that involve actions
in the name of Islam, there is at the same time a largely untold story about
unprecedented movement to Christ among Muslims. There have been more such
movements of thousands or more new disciples among Muslims in the last three
decades or so than in all the previous history of Christian Muslim
relationships! Pray for this momentum to continue.

Acts 2:12-17 : 17 12 They were all amazed and perplexed, saying to each other,
"What does this mean?"
13 (1Co 14:23) Others mocking said, "These men are full of new wine."

Peter's Speech at Pentecost

14 (Ac 1:26) But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice
and said to them, "Men of Judea and all you who dwell in Jerusalem,
let this be known to you, and listen to my words.

- Pray for Christian workers an organisations focused on seeing effective
discipleship movements among Muslim people.

- Ask the Holy Spirit to continue to inspire you to have god's heart for
Muslims, to see them as He does, and to be the light that then to Jesus.

Matthew 5:14-15 : 14 "You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a
hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do men light a candle and put it under
a basket, but on a candlestick. And it gives light to all who are in the
house."

Ideas for prayer

- Pray for opportunities to show the love of Christ to Muslims around you
- Pray for, and offer generous hospitality to, those you know who are serving
Christ among Muslim people -

Romans 12:13 "contribute to the needs of the saints, practice hospitality."
- When you gather with fellow believers, remember to pray for Muslims
throughout the year and encourage them to also participate in 30 Days!

My paternal side is of Muslim heritage and will offer this section to further
call for Muslim converts to Christian and any other converts to Christianity
