Mark 12:28-34

The Great Commandment
Mt 22:34-40; Lk 10:25-28

28 (Mt 22:34-40; Lk 10:25-28) One of the scribes came and heard them
reasoning together. Perceiving that Jesus had answered them well,
he asked Him, "Which is the first commandment of all?"
29 (Dt 6:4; Lk 10:27) Jesus answered him, "The first of all the commandments
is, 'Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is one Lord.
30 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your
soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.' (Dt 6:4-5.)
This is the first commandment.
31 (Lev 19:18; Mt 7:12) The second is this: 'You shall love your neighbour
as yourself.'(Lev 19:18.) There is no other commandment greater than these."
32 (Dt 4:35; 4:39)The scribe said to Him, "Well said, Teacher. You have
spoken the truth, that there is one God and there is no other but Him.
33 (1Sa 15:22; Hos 6:6) To love Him with all the heart,
and with all the understanding, and with all the soul,
and with all the strength, and to love one's neighbor as oneself,
is more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices."
34 (Mt 22:46; Lk 20:40) When Jesus saw that he answered wisely,
He said to him, "You are not far from the kingdom of God."
After that, no one dared to ask Him any question. 

[28] And one of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning together,
and perceiving that he had answered them well, asked him, Which is the first
commandment of all?
[29] And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O
Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord:
[30] And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all
thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the

Matthew 22:34-40

The Great Commandment

34 When the Pharisees heard that He silenced the Sadducees,
they came together.
35 (Lk 7:30; 14:3) One of them, who was a lawyer, tested Him by asking Him,
36 "Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the law?"
37 (Dt 6:5; Lk 10:27) Jesus said to him, " 'You shall love the Lord your God
with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.'(Dt 6:5.)
38 This is the first and great commandment.
39 (Lev 19:18; Mt 19:19; Gal 5:14) And the second is like it:
'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' (Lev 19:18.)
40 (Mt 7:12) On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets." 

[34] But when the Pharisees had heard that he had put the Sadducees to

Mark 12:35-37

The Question About David's Son
Mt 22:41-46; Lk 20:41-44

35 (Lk 20:41-44; Mt 26:55) While Jesus taught in the temple, He said,
"How can the scribes say that Christ is the Son of David?
36 (Ps 110:1; 2Sa 23:2) David himself, speaking by the Holy Spirit, declared:
'The Lord said to my Lord,
"Sit at My right hand,
until I put Your enemies
under Your feet." ' (Ps 110:1.)
37 (Ro 1:3-4) David himself calls Him 'Lord.' How then is He his Son?"
And the large crowd heard him gladly. 

[35] And Jesus answered and said, while he taught in the temple, How say the
scribes that Christ is the Son of David?
[36] For David himself said by the Holy Ghost, The Lord said to my Lord, Sit
thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool.
[37] David therefore himself calleth him Lord; and whence is he then his
son? And the common people heard him gladly. 

Matthew 22:41-46

The Question About David's Son

41 (Mk 12:35-37; Lk 20:41-44) While the Pharisees were assembled,
­Jesus asked them,
42 (Mt 1:1) "What do you think of the Christ? Whose Son is He?"
They said to Him, "The Son of David."
43 (2Sa 23:2; Rev 4:2) He said to them, "How then does David in the Spirit
call Him 'Lord,' saying:
44 (Ps 110:1; 1Co 15:25; Heb 1:13) 'The Lord said to my Lord,
"Sit at My right hand,
until I make Your enemies
Your footstool"'? (Ps 110:1).
45 (Ro 1:3-4) If David then calls Him 'Lord,' how is He his Son?"
46 (Mk 12:34; Lk 20:40) No one was able to answer Him a word,
nor from that day on did anyone dare to ask Him any more questions.

Luke 20:41-44

The Question About David's Son

"Beware of the scribes, who love to go about in long robes
and love greetings in the marketplaces,
39 and the prominent seats in the synagogues, and the places of honor
at banquets,
40 (Lk 20:47; Mt 6:7) who devour widows' houses and for a pretense
make long prayers. They will receive greater condemnation." 

[38] And he said unto them in his doctrine, Beware of the scribes, which
love to go in long clothing, and love salutations in the marketplaces,
[39] And the chief seats in the synagogues, and the uppermost rooms at
feasts:
[40] Which devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayers:
these shall receive greater damnation. 

Matthew 23:1-12

The Denouncing of the Scribes and Pharisees
Mk 12:38-40; Lk 11:37-52; 20:45-47

1 Then Jesus said to the crowds and to His disciples,
2 (Ezr 7:6; 7:25) "The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat.
3 Therefore, whatever they tell you to observe, that observe and do,
but do not do their works. For they speak, but do nothing.
4 (Lk 11:46; Ac 15:10) They fasten heavy loads that are hard to carry
and lay them on men's shoulders, but they themselves will not move
them with their finger.
5 (Dt 6:8; Mt 9:20) "They do all their works to be seen by men.
They make their Scripture boxes broad and lengthen the tassels
on their prayer shawls.
6 They love the places of honour at feasts, and the prominent seats
in the synagogues,
7 (Jn 1:38; 1:49) and greetings in the marketplaces,
and being called 'Rabbi' by men.
8 (Jas 3:1; Mt 23:10) "But do not be called 'Rabbi,'
for you have one Teacher, the Christ, and you are all brothers.

Luke 20:45-47

[45] Then in the audience of all the people he said unto his disciples,
[46] Beware of the scribes, which desire to walk in long robes, and love
greetings in the markets, and the highest seats in the synagogues, and the
chief rooms at feasts;
[47] Which devour widows' houses, and for a shew make long prayers: the same
shall receive greater damnation. 

Matthew 23:13-39

13 (Lk 11:52; Mt 23:27) "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees,
hypocrites! You shut the kingdom of heaven against men.
For you neither enter yourselves,
nor allow those who are entering to go in.
14 (Mk 12:40; Lk 20:47) Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees,
hypocrites! You devour widows' houses and for pretense
make long prayers. Therefore you will receive the greater condemnation.
15 (Ac 13:43; 2:10) "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!
You travel sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he becomes one,
you make him twice as much a son of hell as yourselves.
16 (Mt 15:14; 23:24) "Woe to you, blind guides, who say,
'If anyone swears by the temple, it is nothing. But if anyone swears
by the gold of the temple, he is obligated.'
17 (Mt 23:19) You blind fools! Which is greater, the gold or the temple
that sanctifies the gold?
18 And you say, 'If anyone swears by the altar, it is nothing.
But if anyone swears by the gift on it, he is obligated.'
19 (Ex 29:37) You blind fools! Which is greater, the gift
or the altar that sanctifies the gift? 

[13] But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the
kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither
suffer ye them that are entering to go in.
[14] Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows'
houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the
greater damnation.
[15] Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and
land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more
the child of hell than yourselves.
[16] Woe unto you, ye blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the
temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple,
he is a debtor!
[17] Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple
that sanctifieth the gold?
[18] And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever
sweareth by the gift that is upon it, he is guilty.
[19] Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gift, or the altar that
sanctifieth the gift? 

Mark 12:41-44

The Widow's Offering
Lk 21:1-4

41 (2Ki 12:9; Jn 8:20) Jesus sat opposite the treasury
and saw how the people put money into the treasury.
Many who were rich put in much.
42 But a certain poor widow came and put in two mites, which make a farthing.
(Gk. 2 lepta. A lepton, meaning "small" or "thin," was a fraction of a penny
and the smallest coin circulated.)
43 (2Co 8:2; 8:12) He called His disciples to Him and said to them,
"Truly I say to you, this poor widow has put in more than all those
who are contributing to the treasury.
44 (Lk 8:43; 15:12) They all contributed out of their abundance.
But she, out of her poverty, put in all that she had, her entire livelihood."

[41] And Jesus sat over against the treasury, and beheld how the people cast
money into the treasury: and many that were rich cast in much.
[42] And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in two mites, which
make a farthing.
[43] And he called unto him his disciples, and saith unto them, Verily I say
unto you, That this poor widow hath cast more in, than all they which have
cast into the treasury:
[44] For all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did
cast in all that she had, even all her living. 

Luke 21:1-4

The Widow's Offering
Mk 12:41-44
1 (Mk 12:41-44; Jn 8:20) He looked up and saw the rich putting
their gifts in the treasury.
2 (Mk 12:42) He also saw a poor widow putting in two mites,
(Gk. 2 lepta. A lepton, meaning "small" or "thin," is a fraction
of a penny and about 1/128 of a denarius, which was a day's wage.
A Jewish bronze or copper coin, it was the smallest coin circulated.)
32 (Co 8:12) and He said, "Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put
in more than all of them.
4 (Lk 8:43) For all these out of their abundance have put in their gifts
for God. But she out of her poverty has put in all the living she had."

sir,' but did not go.
31 "Which of the two did the will of his father?"
They said, "The first."
Jesus said to them, "Truly I say to you, the tax collectors and prostitutes 
enter the kingdom of God before you. 
32 For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe
him. But the tax collectors and prostitutes believed him. And even when you 
saw it, you did not afterward repent and believe him.

[28] But what think ye? A certain man had two sons; and he came to the first,

Genesis 33:1-11

Jacob Meets Esau

1 Then Jacob looked up and saw Esau coming and four hundred men with him. 
So he divided the children among Leah, Rachel, and the two female servants. 
2 He put the female servants and their children in front, then Leah 
and her children next, and then Rachel and Joseph last. 
3 He went on before them,
 bowing himself to the ground seven times, until he came near to his brother.
4 But Esau ran to meet him and embraced him and fell on his neck 
and kissed him, and they wept. 5 When Esau looked up and saw 
the women and the children, he said, "Who are those with you?"
Jacob said, "The children whom God has graciously given your servant."
6 Then the female servants came near, they and their children, 
and they bowed down. 
7 Leah also with her children came near 
and bowed themselves. Afterward Joseph and Rachel came near, 
and they bowed themselves.
8 Esau said, "What do you mean by all this company that I met?"
Jacob answered, "These are to find favour in the sight of my lord."
9 Esau said, "I have enough, my brother. Keep what you have for yourself."
10 Jacob said, "No, I pray you, if I have now found favuor in your sight, 
then receive my gift from my hand. For I have seen your face, 
and it is as though I have seen the face of God, with you having received me 
favorably. 
11 Please take my blessing that has been brought to you, 
because God has dealt graciously with me and because I have plenty." 
So he urged him, and he took it.

[1] And Jacob lifted up his eyes, and looked, and, behold, Esau came, and

[2] And he put the handmaids and their children foremost, and Leah and her
children after, and Rachel and Joseph hindermost.
[3] And he passed over before them, and bowed himself to the ground seven

kissed him: and they wept.
[5] And he lifted up his eyes, and saw the women and the children; and said,

[6] Then the handmaidens came near, they and their children, and they bowed
themselves.
[7] And Leah also with her children came near, and bowed themselves: and
after came Joseph near and Rachel, and they bowed themselves.
[8] And he said, What meanest thou by all this drove which I met? And he
said, These are to find grace in the sight of my lord.
[9] And Esau said, I have enough, my brother; keep that thou hast unto
thyself.
[10] And Jacob said, Nay, I pray thee, if now I have found grace in thy
sight, then receive my present at my hand: for therefore I have seen thy
face, as though I had seen the face of God, and thou wast pleased with me.
[11] Take, I pray thee, my blessing that is brought to thee; because God
hath dealt graciously with me, and because I have enough. And he urged him,
and he took it. 

In college, I studied William Shakespeare's writing for a semester. The class 
required a giant textbook containing everything Shakespeare had ever written. 
The book weighed several pounds, and I had to carry it for hours at a time. 
Lugging that weight around caused my back to hurt, and it eventually broke a 
metal fastener on my bookbag!

Some things are just too heavy for us to carry. Emotional baggage from past 
hurt, for example, can weigh us down with bitterness and hatred. But God wants
us to have freedom through forgiving people and, when possible, reconciling 
with them (Colossians 3:13). The deeper the pain, the longer this may take. 
That's okay. It took many years for Esau to forgive Jacob for stealing his 
birthright and blessing (Genesis 27:36).

When the two finally reunited, Esau graciously forgave his brother and even 
"embraced him" (33:4). Not a word was exchanged before they both burst into 
tears. Over time, Esau had let go of the anger that made him consider murder 
(27:41). And all those years gave Jacob the chance to see the magnitude of how
he'd harmed his brother. He was humble and respectful throughout the 
reunion (33:8-11).

In the end, both brothers came to the place where neither required anything 
from the other (vv. 9, 15). It was enough to forgive and be forgiven and walk 
away free from the heavy baggage of the past.

to become sons of God, to those who believed in His name,

12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power
to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

"Dad, can I ask you something?" Jimmy leaned across the back of his
father's chair. His father lowered the newspaper and reached around,
settling Jimmy on his lap.
"Sure. Son," he answered. "You can ask me anything you want. The answer
might not be Yes, but you always have the right to ask."
For many who have grown up in homes where the father was absent, or when
present, abusive or silent, the scenario of Jimmy and his father may
seem unrealistic. Often we aren't given the right by our parents to ask
what we want, to communicate openly, to express our needs and desires.
But god clearly indicates that no matter what our human families have been
like, in his family there are no barriers to belonging,
to open communications. When we commit our lives to Christ and submit to his
lordship, we have the right to become the sons and daughters of God.
In Christ, we have the right to approach him, to pray, to seek wisdom,
to ask advice, to make requests, to verbalise our needs and desires. We don't
have to be afraid of sounding stupid or being rejected, because in Christ
we belong to him, and he loves us.
The KJV uses the word "power" in verse 12 - "to them gave he power to become
the sons of God." Power implies ability, that we are equipped by the Spirit
to be children of the King. We have the right and we have the power to become
who God has called us to be - his children.

Charlottetown does not currently (fall 2014) have a local CNMM network.
Pray with us for God's people to come together in reaching Muslims
cooperatively across denominational and organisational lines.

More than 200 attended the Eid festival at the end of Ramadan, the Islamic
month of fasting during daylight hours and the reading of the Qur'an, at
the Dar as-Salam mosque in 2014. This second mosque established
in Charlottetown, the other being the Muslims Association of PEI.
As of mid-2014,there are between 250 to 300 families, mostly in Charlottetown.

The Muslims of Charlottetown see their community as symbolically important
for this nation since this is known as the "birthplace of Canada". Yet we were
established as the "Dominion of Canada" with an appeal not only to
monarchial authority, but even more to God's higher Biblical authority as
shown in Psalm 72:8, "May he have dominion from sea to sea,
and from the River to the ends of the earth."
Let us intercede together for:

- the growing Muslim population of Charlottetown and spreading
outward through PEI to encounter the Prince of Peace.
- believers to have faith and vision to reach out to the Muslim Community
in contextual ways to share the Gospel
- churches and ministries to rise up in wisdom, knowledge and understanding,
giving and training, coaching and encouragement to believers reaching
out to Muslims locally.
- a prayer movement to be established, feeding a growing move of Yahweh's
Spirit in His churches and people , and an awakening an openness
and spiritual hunger in Muslims for relationship with the Father
through the Son.

When the new moon is sighted it marks the beginning of t he new Islamic month
and Eid al-Fitr, the "Festival of Breaking the Fast", will start! After 30 days
of fasting, the Eid celebration at the end of Ramadan is a joyful time that
usually lasts about 3 days. Muslims will buy new clothes, exchange gifts and,
of course, enjoy special foods. In Muslim-majority nations, the streets may be
decorated and festivals will be held.
For many Muslims, Eid-al-Fitr begins with communal prayers at daybreak and the
distribution of money (zakat) to the poor, which is one of the 5 pillars of
Islam.
You can greet Muslim friends during this time by saying "Eid Mubarak",
which means Blessed Eid!"
Ramadan is over for this year, but you can continue to pray for Muslims you
know, and Muslims around the world:
- Despite the unsettling developments in our world today that involve actions
in the name of Islam, there is at the same time a largely untold story about
unprecedented movement to Christ among Muslims. There have been more such
movements of thousands or more new disciples among Muslims in the last three
decades or so than in all the previous history of Christian Muslim
relationships! Pray for this momentum to continue.

Acts 2:12-17 : 17 12 They were all amazed and perplexed, saying to each other,
"What does this mean?"
13 (1Co 14:23) Others mocking said, "These men are full of new wine."

- Pray for Christian workers an organisations focused on seeing effective
discipleship movements among Muslim people.

- Ask the Holy Spirit to continue to inspire you to have god's heart for
Muslims, to see them as He does, and to be the light that then to Jesus.

Matthew 5:14-15 : 14 "You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a
hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do men light a candle and put it under
a basket, but on a candlestick. And it gives light to all who are in the
house."

Ideas for prayer

- Pray for opportunities to show the love of Christ to Muslims around you
- Pray for, and offer generous hospitality to, those you know who are serving
Christ among Muslim people -

Romans 12:13 "contribute to the needs of the saints, practice hospitality."
- When you gather with fellow believers, remember to pray for Muslims
throughout the year and encourage them to also participate in 30 Days!

My paternal side is of Muslim heritage and will offer this section to further
call for Muslim converts to Christian and any other converts to Christianity
