1 Corinthians 15

The Resurrection of Christ

1 (Ro 5:2; 2Co 1:24) Now, brothers, I declare to you the gospel which I
preached to you, which you have received, and in which you stand.
2 (Gal 3:4; Ro 1:16) Through it you are saved, if you keep in memory
what I preached to you, unless you have believed in vain.
3 (1Pe 2:24; 1Co 11:23; Gal 1:4) For I delivered to you first of all
that which I also received: how Christ died for our sins according
to the Scriptures,
4 (Ps 16:10-11; Hos 6:2) was buried, rose again the third day
according to the Scriptures,
5 (Mk 16:14; Ac 10:41) and was seen by Cephas, and then by the twelve.
6 (Ac 7:60; 1Co 15:18) Then He was seen by over five hundred brothers
at once, of whom the greater part remain to this present time,
though some have passed away.
7 (Lk 24:50) Then He was seen by James and then by all the apostles.
8 (1Co 9:1; Ac 9:17) Last of all, He was seen by me also,
as by one born at the wrong time.
9 (Ac 8:3; 2Co 12:11) For I am the least of the apostles
and am not fit to be called an apostle,
because I persecuted the church of God.
10 (Php 2:13; 2Co 3:5) But by the grace of God I am what I am.
And His grace toward me was not in vain. I labored more abundantly
than all of them, yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me.
11 Therefore, whether it was I or they,
so we preach and so you believed.

[1] Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto
you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;
[2] By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto
you, unless ye have believed in vain.
[3] For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how
that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
[4] And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according
to the scriptures:
[5] And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve:
[6] After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom
the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep.
[7] After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles.
[8] And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time.
[9] For I am the least of the apostles, that am not meet to be called an
apostle, because I persecuted the church of God.
[10] But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was
bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they
all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me.
[11] Therefore whether it were I or they, so we preach, and so ye believed.

The Resurrection of the Dead

12 (Ac 23:8; 2Ti 2:18) Now if Christ is preached that He rose from the dead,
how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead?
13 (1Th 4:14) If there is no resurrection of the dead,
then Christ has not risen.
14 If Christ has not risen, then our preaching is vain,
and your faith is also vain.
15 (Ac 2:24) Yes, and we would then be found false witnesses of God,
because we have testified that God raised up Christ, whom He did not
raise up, if in fact the dead do not rise.
16 For if the dead do not rise, then Christ has not been raised.
17 (Ro 4:25) If Christ is not raised, your faith is vain;
you are still in your sins.
18 (Rev 14:13; 1Co 15:6) Then they also who have fallen asleep
in Christ have perished.
19 (2Ti 3:12) If in this life only we have hope in Christ,
we are of all men most miserable.
20 (Ac 26:23; 1Co 15:23) But now is Christ risen from the dead
and become the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep.
21 (Jn 11:25; Ro 6:23) For since death came by man, by man came
also the resurrection of the dead.
22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.
23 (1Co 15:20; 15:52) But every man in his own order: Christ the first fruits;
afterward, those who are Christ's at His coming.
24 (Da 7:27; 7:14; Isa 9:7) Then comes the end when He will deliver up
the kingdom to God the Father, when He puts an end to all rule
and all authority and power.
25 (Ps 110:1; Mt 22:44) For He will reign until He has put all enemies
under His feet.
26 (2Ti 1:10; Rev 20:14) The last enemy that will be destroyed is death.
27 (Ps 8:6; Mt 28:18) For He "has put all things under His feet."(Ps 8:6.)
But when He says, "all things are put under Him," it is revealed that He,
who has put all things under Him, is the exception.
28 (1Co 3:23; Php 3:21) When all things are subjected to Him,
then the Son Himself will also be subject to Him who put
all things under Him, that God may be all in all.
29 Otherwise, what will they do who are baptized for the dead,
if the dead do not rise at all? Why are they then baptized for the dead?
30 And why do we stand in danger every hour?
31 (Ro 8:36; 1Th 2:19) I affirm, by the boasting in you which
I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die daily.
32 (Isa 22:13; Lk 12:19) If, in the manner of men, I have fought with beasts
at Ephesus, what advantage is it to me if the dead do not rise?
"Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die."(Isa 22:13.)
33 (1Co 5:6; 6:9) Do not be deceived: "Bad company corrupts good morals."
34 (Ro 13:11; 1Co 6:5) Awake to righteousness and do not sin,
for some do not have the knowledge of God. I say this to your shame.

[12] Now if Christ be preached that he rose from the dead, how say some
among you that there is no resurrection of the dead?
[13] But if there be no resurrection of the dead, then is Christ not risen:
[14] And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith
is also vain.
[15] Yea, and we are found false witnesses of God; because we have testified
of God that he raised up Christ: whom he raised not up, if so be that the
dead rise not.
[16] For if the dead rise not, then is not Christ raised:
[17] And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your
sins.
[18] Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished.
[19] If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most
miserable.
[20] But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of
them that slept.
[21] For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the
dead.

[23] But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they
that are Christ's at his coming.
[24] Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to
God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule and all authority
and power.
[25] For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet.
[26] The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.
[27] For he hath put all things under his feet. But when he saith, all
things are put under him, it is manifest that he is excepted, which did put
all things under him.
[28] And when all things shall be subdued unto him, then shall the Son also
himself be subject unto him that put all things under him, that God may be
all in all.
[29] Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead, if the dead
rise not at all? why are they then baptized for the dead?
[30] And why stand we in jeopardy every hour?
[31] I protest by your rejoicing which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I
die daily.
[32] If after the manner of men I have fought with beasts at Ephesus, what
advantageth it me, if the dead rise not? let us eat and drink; for to morrow
we die.
[33] Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners.
[34] Awake to righteousness, and sin not; for some have not the knowledge of
God: I speak this to your shame.

The Resurrection Body

35 (Eze 37:3) But someone will say, "How are the dead raised up?
With what body do they come?”
36 (Jn 12:24) You fool! What you sow is not made alive unless it dies.
37 When you sow, you do not sow the body that shall be, but a bare kernel,
perhaps of wheat or of some other grain.
38 Then God gives it a body as He pleases, and to each seed its own body.
39 All flesh is not the same flesh. There is one kind of flesh of men,
another flesh of beasts, another of fish, and another of birds.
40 There are also celestial bodies and terrestrial bodies.
The glory of the celestial is one, and the glory of the terrestrial
is another.
41 There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon,
and another glory of the stars. One star differs from another star in glory.
42 (Da 12:3; Mt 13:43) So also is the resurrection of the dead.
The body is sown in corruption; it is raised in incorruption.
43 (Col 3:4) It is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory.
It is sown in weakness, it is raised in power.
44 It is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body.
There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body.
45 (Ge 2:7; Ro 8:2; Jn 5:21) So it is written,
"The first man Adam was made a living soul." (Ge 2:7.)
The last Adam was made a life-giving spirit.
46 However, that which is spiritual is not first, but the natural,
and then the spiritual.
47 (Jn 3:31; Ge 2:7; 3:19) The first man was of the earth, made of dust;
the second man was the Lord from heaven.
48 (Php 3:20-21) As was the man of dust, so are those who are of dust;
and as is the man of heaven, so are those who are of heaven.
49 (Ge 5:3; Ro 8:29) As we have borne the image of the man of dust,
we shall also bear the image of the man of heaven.
50 (Mt 16:17) Now this I say, brothers, that flesh and blood cannot
inherit the kingdom of God, nor does corruption inherit incorruption.
51 (1Co 13:2; Php 3:21) Listen, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep,
but we shall all be changed.
52 (Mt 24:31; Jn 5:25; Isa 27:13) In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye,
at the last trumpet, for the trumpet will sound,
the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
53 (2Co 5:2-4; 1Jn 3:2) For this corruptible will put on incorruption,
and this mortal will put on immortality.
54 (Isa 25:8; Rev 20:14) When this corruptible will have put on incorruption,
and this mortal will have put on immortality, then the saying that is written
shall come to pass: "Death is swallowed up in victory."(Isa 25:8.)
55 (Hos 13:14) "O death, where is your sting?
O grave, where is your victory?"(Hos 13:14.)
56 (Ro 4:15) The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law.
57 (Ro 8:37; 2Co 2:14) But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory
through our Lord Jesus Christ!
58 (1Co 16:10; 2Pe 3:14) Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast,
unmovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that
your labor in the Lord is not in vain. 

[35] But some man will say, How are the dead raised up? and with what body
do they come?
[36] Thou fool, that which thou sowest is not quickened, except it die:
[37] And that which thou sowest, thou sowest not that body that shall be,
but bare grain, it may chance of wheat, or of some other grain:
[38] But God giveth it a body as it hath pleased him, and to every seed his
own body.

[49] And as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the

[58] Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always
abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is
not in vain in the Lord.

1 Corinthians 16
The Contribution for the Saints

1 (Ac 24:17; 16:6) Now concerning the collection for the saints,
as I have given instruction to the churches of Galatia, so even you must do.
2 (Ac 20:7; Rev 1:10; Lk 24:1) On the first day of the week let every
one of you lay in store, as God has prospered him,
so that no collections be made when I come.
3 And when I come, I will send whomever you approve with your letters
to take your generous gifts to Jerusalem.
4 If it is fitting that I go also, they will go with me.

[1] Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given order to
the churches of Galatia, even so do ye.
[2] Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store,
as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come.
[3] And when I come, whomsoever ye shall approve by your letters, them will
I send to bring your liberality unto Jerusalem.
[4] And if it be meet that I go also, they shall go with me.
Paul's Plans for Travel

5 (Ac 19:21; 1Co 4:19) Now I will come to you after I pass through Macedonia.
For I will pass through Macedonia.
6 (Ac 15:3; Ro 15:24) It may be that I will remain, of course,
and spend the winter with you,
that you may send me on my journey wherever I go.
7 (Ac 18:21; 1Co 4:19) For I do not wish to see you now in passing.
Instead, I trust to remain a while with you, if the Lord permits.
8 (Ac 2:1) But I will remain at Ephesus until Pentecost.
9 (Ac 14:27) For a great and effective door has opened to me,
and there are many adversaries.
10 (1Co 15:58; 4:17) Now if Timothy comes, see that he may remain
with you without fear, for he does the work of the Lord, as I also do.

15 (Ro 16:5; 1Co 1:16) You know the house of Stephanas,
that it is the first fruits of Achaia, and that they have devoted
themselves to the ministry of the saints. So I ask you, brothers,
16 (Heb 13:17; 1Th 5:12) that you submit yourselves to such people,
and to everyone who helps and labors with us.
17 (2Co 11:9; Php 2:30) I am happy about the arrival of Stephanas,
Fortunatus, and Achaicus, for they supplied what was lacking on your part.
18 (2Co 7:13; 1Th 5:12) They have refreshed my spirit and yours.
Therefore acknowledge these men.

[5] Now I will come unto you, when I shall pass through Macedonia: for I do

Final Request and Greetings

19 (Ac 18:2) The churches of Asia greet you. Aquila and Priscilla
greet you heartily in the Lord, with the church that is in their house.
20 (Ro 16:16) All the brothers greet you. Greet one another with a holy kiss.
21 (Gal 6:11; Col 4:18) I, Paul, write this greeting with my own hand.
22 (Ro 9:3; Jn 14:21) If anyone does not love the Lord Jesus Christ,
let him be accursed. Come, O Lord!

PSALMS 100
A Psalm of thanksgiving.
1 Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all the earth!
2 (Ps 63:1; 84:2) Serve the Lord with gladness;
come before His presence with singing.
3 (Ps 79:10; 80:5) Know that the Lord, He is God;
it is He who has made us, and not we ourselves;
we are His people, and the sheep of His pasture.
4 (Isa 30:29; Ps 62:8) Enter into His gates with thanksgiving,
and into His courts with praise;
be thankful to Him, and bless His name.
5 (Ps 42:11; 43:5) For the Lord is good; His mercy endures forever,
and His faithfulness to all generations.

I've been following and praying for a fellow writer who's been posting online 
about her cancer journey. She alternates between sharing updates about her 
physical pain and challenges and sharing prayer requests with Scripture 
and praises to God. It's beautiful to see her courageous smile whether she's 
in the hospital awaiting treatments or at home wearing a bandana because her 
hair is falling out. With each challenge, she never fails to encourage 
others to trust God during trials.

When we’re going through difficulties, it may be challenging to find reasons 
to be grateful and to praise God. However, Psalm 100 gives us reasons to 
rejoice and give God praise despite our circumstances. The psalmist says: 
"Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we
ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture." (v. 3). He adds, 
"For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth
to all generations." (v. 5).

Whatever our trial, we can take comfort knowing that God is near to our broken
hearts (34:18). The more time we spend with God in prayer and reading the 
Bible, the more we'll be able to 
"Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise" 
and "be thankful unto him, and bless his name." (100:4). We can 
"Make a joyful noise unto the LORD" (v. 1) even and perhaps especially 
when we're in a difficult season because our God is faithful.

Week 7 Promises of Grace - Day 2 - Due Season

Gal 6:9

9 And let us not grow weary in doing good,
for in due season we shall reap, if we do not give up.

9 And let us not be weary in well doing:
for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.

Jackie's preschool class took on an exciting project: they were going to grow
flowers from seeds, Each child took the seed, planted it carefully in the
bedding soil, watered, and waited. But Jackie couldn't wait. Every day
for a week he ran to the window box, looked for his plants, poked, prodded,
unplanted the seeds and then planted them again. "It's no use,"
he pouted after the first week. "Nothing's gonna grow in there."
We live in an instant society - microwave dinners, quick fixes, easy answers.
We are conditioned by our environment to expect - even to demand -
immediate response, and when we have to wait,
we become impatient and irritable.
Paul's exhortation to the Galatians, "Let us not become weary in doing good,"
is as appropriate for twentieth-century believers as it was for the new church
at Galatia. We lose motivation when we don't see results,
and weariness sets in.
If our work does not seem to be producing as we hope, we want to abandon it
and move on to a new project.
But God says, "You will reap a harvest if you don't give up." We give up too
soon in our prayers for a loved one's salvation. We abandon hope too readily
when we don't see spiritual growth in our own lives, when our investment in
another's spiritual maturity seems to have no return. The Lord says,
"The harvest is coming; be patient; trust me."
In due season the harvest comes; when it's the right time. When the seed has
had time to germinate, when the roots are string enough, when the conditions
are right, the reaping time will come. But we must be willing to wait for
the due season, the moment of ripeness, when our labor brings its return.

Application

a) Have I ever felt that my spiritual labours have produced no harvest at all?

b) What does it mean to my own spiritual growth that there is a "due season"
for reaping the harvest?

Luke 16:10-12

10 (Mt 25:21; Lk 19:17) "He who is faithful in what is least is faithful
also in much. And he who is dishonest in the least is dishonest also
in much.
11 So if you have not been faithful in the unrighteous wealth,
who will commit to your trust the true riches?
12 And if you have not been faithful in that which is another man's,
who will give you that which is your own?"

As of Autumn 2014, St. John's does not have a local CNMM network. Pray with us
for God's people to come together in prayer
and cooperative efforts to reach Muslims with the Good News.

St. John's has one mosque and 2 more musallas , or prayer locations, which
may grow into mosques of their own. The mosque is called Masjid an Noor,
The Mosque of the Light, and mosque historical documents record a trip in 1986
to Saudi Arabia to raise funds for the land purchase and construction costs.
A small number of Muslim families had come prior to 1964, but moved on to
other places after a short time. After this date, a small community began
to remain and grow , reaching about 25 families in the 1980s. A number
of international students also join the community annually
ranging from 25 to 60.

In 2014 the mosque website reports the community is made up of some 200
families and many university students attending Memorial University. A
small number of native Newfoundlanders have also converted to the Islamic
faith, one saying of this religion in Newfoundland, "Islam is a growing face".
With the growth of the community, the current challenge is lack of space
in the mosque, which they are now looking at expanding.

Pray for

- The true Light of life, Jesus Christ, to be revealed to Muslims
in Newfoundland through the word, dreams, visions and answers to prayer.
- Christians to be as "wise as serpents and harmless as doves" regarding
Islam and reaching out in loving witness to Muslims in St. John's.
- for a dedicated, intentional witness to the growing number of Muslim
students on the university, college and trade school campuses.

When the new moon is sighted it marks the beginning of t he new Islamic month
and Eid al-Fitr, the "Festival of Breaking the Fast", will start! After 30 days
of fasting, the Eid celebration at the end of Ramadan is a joyful time that
usually lasts about 3 days. Muslims will buy new clothes, exchange gifts and,
of course, enjoy special foods. In Muslim-majority nations, the streets may be
decorated and festivals will be held.
For many Muslims, Eid-al-Fitr begins with communal prayers at daybreak and the
distribution of money (zakat) to the poor, which is one of the 5 pillars of
Islam.
You can greet Muslim friends during this time by saying "Eid Mubarak",
which means Blessed Eid!"
Ramadan is over for this year, but you can continue to pray for Muslims you
know, and Muslims around the world:
- Despite the unsettling developments in our world today that involve actions
in the name of Islam, there is at the same time a largely untold story about
unprecedented movement to Christ among Muslims. There have been more such
movements of thousands or more new disciples among Muslims in the last three
decades or so than in all the previous history of Christian Muslim
relationships! Pray for this momentum to continue.

Acts 2:12-17 : 17 12 They were all amazed and perplexed, saying to each other,
"What does this mean?"
13 (1Co 14:23) Others mocking said, "These men are full of new wine."

Peter's Speech at Pentecost

- Ask the Holy Spirit to continue to inspire you to have god's heart for
Muslims, to see them as He does, and to be the light that then to Jesus.

Matthew 5:14-15 : 14 "You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a
hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do men light a candle and put it under
a basket, but on a candlestick. And it gives light to all who are in the
house."

Ideas for prayer

- Pray for opportunities to show the love of Christ to Muslims around you
- Pray for, and offer generous hospitality to, those you know who are serving
Christ among Muslim people -

Romans 12:13 "contribute to the needs of the saints, practice hospitality."
- When you gather with fellow believers, remember to pray for Muslims
throughout the year and encourage them to also participate in 30 Days!

The Distance He traveled

My longest trip took me from the Midwestern USA to the Southeast Asian
city of Singapore, a distance of 9290 miles as the crow files.
Astronauts have traveled almost 250 000 miles , the distance from
Earth to the moon. Since 1977, Voyager 2 has traveled to 4 planets
and their moons, passing Neptune in 1989 and moving beyond the solar system.
Today it is more than 8 000 000 000 miles from the Sun.
God traveled even further than that, although we're not measuring
the distance in miles. The infinite Creator stepped inside an unborn baby,
the weakest of humans. Paul says it this way,
"who, being in the form of God,
did not consider equality with God something to be grasped.
But He emptied Himself," That's a long trip, from majesty to humility,
from deity to humanity, from God to God-man.
For God to make himself nothing is to travel from the infinite ot the finite.
Try as we might, we cannot fully comprehend that distance. The best
we can do is to make comparisons. Lewis compares the Incarnation of God
to the idea of becoming a slug or a crab. That brings a smile to our faces.
That would be a huge distance to travel, a humbling of oneself,
changing from human to animal. I can't really imagine it. Can you?
What Jesus did is all the more remarkable.

Jesus, Immanuel, Thank You for going the distance to
become one of us, God with us. Amen.

FIRST Monday OF ADVENT
Credentials

Luke 1:5-7

5 There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judea, a certain priest
named Zechariah, of the division of Abijah. And his wife was
of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth.
6 They were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments
and ordinances of the Lord blamelessly.
7 But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren,
and they both were now well advanced in years.

Luke, the historian, want to inform us that Zechariah was
a real man. He places him carefully in the datable reign
of King Herald of Judea and in the priestly order of Abijah.

To add to his credentials, Luke tells us that Zechariah's wife
Elizabath was also of the Aaronic priestly order. Not only were
they righteous, but they were blameless in following all the
Lord's precepts. We know that no one is perfect, for "All have sinned"
(Romans 3:23), but they had done their best to keep God's statutes
and had come as close to rectitude as possible for human beings.

So what went wrong? Why is Elizabeth barren and looked down on in
and by their culture for being so? Is their goodness not
sufficient to merit God's favour? No, and none of ours is.
Rather this text and its emphasis on her growing older is
setting us up for an extraordinary divine intervention.

Isn't it arresting that God blows the rules of nature to
accomplish his purposes?

Prayer

God , thank you for beginning this Advent with you astonishing
- and love-inducing- works! Amen.

FIRST MONDAY OF ADVENT

AH-HA! Ambassadors of Health, Hope and ANEW!

We may find it hard to wait for Christmas to come, especially since
we have been hearing Christmas carols in the shopping malls since
Labour Day and seeing smiling stuffed Santas on neighbourhood lawns
since Halloween! but in a way, that's all right, because it helps us to remind
ourselves that the Lord comes to us anew each day, 
to renew us anew in out Baptism!

Seeing advent anew occurs when we do more watching and waiting for
God's presence and promise in and around us and when we do less
waiting and worrying about peripheral things. Watch and wait to see how
the weighty issues of worries, woes and wars fall into new and refreshing
ways of looking at life in the Lord! Advent renews us to remember that
Christ came to us in the manger ... that Christ will come again ...
and that Christ comes to us each day - in water and Word, in words and
wonders, in wows and other winsome ways.

Prayer

Lord, thanks for calling us to be your AH-HA people. Thanks for refreshing
is anew with your love, your forgiveness and your precious presence among us.
It's a new day, Lord, in you.
