Day 353, 18 December 2024 - 26th Day of Advent

2 John 1

John

The second general epistle of John was probably written in Ephesus
in the AD90s by John the beloved disciple. It is a very personal
and wise exhortation that encourages believers to walk in the light
and warns them about deceivers and how they conduct their lives.
It is not only an encouragement to exhibit agape
(a Greek word for committed or volitional love),
but it is also a sound exhortation to separate from worldliness
and unholiness.

Salutation

The elder,

1 To the elect lady and her children, whom I love in the truth,
and not I only, but also all those who know the truth,
2 for the sake of the truth, which remains in us, and will be with us forever:
3 Grace, mercy, and peace will be with you from God the Father and from the
Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love.

[1] The elder unto the elect lady and her children, whom I love in the
truth; and not I only, but also all they that have known the truth;
[2] For the truth's sake, which dwelleth in us, and shall be with us for
ever.

Truth and Love

4 I greatly rejoiced that I found some of your children walking in truth
as we were commanded by the Father.
5 And now I ask you, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment to you,
but that which we have had from the beginning, that we love one another.
6 And this is love: that we walk according to His commandments.
This is the commandment, that as you have heard from the beginning,
you should walk in it.
7 For many deceivers, who do not confess that Jesus Christ has come
in the flesh, have gone out into the world. Each one is a deceiver
and an antichrist.
8 Watch yourselves, so that we do not lose those things for which
we have worked, but that we receive a full reward.
9 Whoever transgresses and does not remain in the teaching of Christ
does not have God. Whoever remains in the teaching of Christ has both
the Father and the Son.
10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching,
do not receive him into your house, nor greet him.
11 For whoever greets him takes part in his evil deeds.

[3] Grace be with you, mercy, and peace, from God the Father, and from the
Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love.
[4] I rejoiced greatly that I found of thy children walking in truth, as we
have received a commandment from the Father.
[5] And now I beseech thee, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment
unto thee, but that which we had from the beginning, that we love one
another.
[6] And this is love, that we walk after his commandments. This is the
commandment, That, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in
it.
[7] For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that
Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist.
[8] Look to yourselves, that we lose not those things which we have wrought,
but that we receive a full reward.
[9] Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath
not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father
and the Son.
[10] If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him
not into your house, neither bid him God speed:
[11] For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds.

Final Greetings

12 I have many things to write to you, but I prefer not to write
with paper and ink. Instead, I hope to come to you and speak face
to face that our joy may be complete.
13 The children of your elect sister greet you. Amen.

3 John 1

John

John the Beloved probably wrote the third general epistle
of John in Ephesus in the AD90s. It addresses the reality
of true and false ministers. Addressed to Gaius, a local
church leader, it commends a disciple named Demetrius
while also warning against the tactics of Diotrephes.
The Holy Spirit provides sound instruction
and sober exhortations for all believers in this epistle.

Salutation

To the beloved Gaius, whom I love in the truth:
2 Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you
and that you may be in good health, even as your soul is well.
3 For I greatly rejoiced when brothers came and testified
of the truth that is in you, just as you walk in the truth.

[2] Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in
health, even as thy soul prospereth.

Working Together

5 Beloved, you are faithful in all you do for the brothers and for strangers,
6 who have testified of your love before the church. You will do well to send
them along on their journey in a manner worthy of God.
7 For His name's sake they went out, receiving no help from the Gentiles.
8 Therefore we ought to receive such men, that we might be fellow workers
for the truth.
9 I wrote to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to put himself first
among them, did not accept us.
10 Because of this, if I come, I will bring up what kinds of works he does:
ranting against us with malicious words. Not content with that, he does not
accept the brothers, and stops those who want to, and throws them
out of the church.
11 Beloved, do not imitate that which is evil, but that which is good.
Whoever does good is from God, but whoever does evil has not seen God.
12 Demetrius receives good reports from everyone and from the truth itself.
Yes, and we also testify, and you know that our testimony is true.

[5] Beloved, thou doest faithfully whatsoever thou doest to the brethren,
and to strangers;
[6] Which have borne witness of thy charity before the church: whom if thou
bring forward on their journey after a godly sort, thou shalt do well:
[7] Because that for his name's sake they went forth, taking nothing of the
Gentiles.
[8] We therefore ought to receive such, that we might be fellowhelpers to
the truth.
[9] I wrote unto the church: but Diotrephes, who loveth to have the
preeminence among them, receiveth us not.
[10] Wherefore, if I come, I will remember his deeds which he doeth, prating
against us with malicious words: and not content therewith, neither doth he
himself receive the brethren, and forbiddeth them that would, and casteth
them out of the church.
[11] Beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good. He that
doeth good is of God: but he that doeth evil hath not seen God.
[12] Demetrius hath good report of all men, and of the truth itself: yea,
and we also bear record; and ye know that our record is true.

13 I had many things to write, but I would rather not write to you
with pen and ink.
14 Instead, I hope to see you soon, and we shall speak face to face.

The Creation

It was 1968, and America was mired in a war with Vietnam, racial violence was 
exploding in cities, and two public figures had been assassinated. A year 
before, fire had taken the lives of three astronauts on the launchpad, and the
idea of going to the moon seemed like a pipe dream. Nonetheless, Apollo 8 
managed to launch a few days before Christmas.

It became the first manned mission to orbit the moon. The flight crew, Borman,
Anders, and Lovell-all men of faith-broadcast a Christmas Eve message: 
"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth" (Genesis 1:1). At the
time, it was the most watched TV event in the world, and millions shared the 
God's-eye view of Earth in a now iconic photo. Frank Borman finished the 
reading: "And God saw that it was good" (v. 10).

Sometimes it's hard to look at ourselves, all the hardships we're mired in, 
and see anything that's good. But we might return to the story of creation and
see God's view of us: "In the image of God he created them" (v. 27). Let's 
pair that with another divine-eye view: "For God so loved the world" 
(John 3:16). Today, remember that God created you, sees the good despite 
the sin, and loves the you He created.

Week 2 - Saved by Grace - Day 5 - Starting Over

2 Cor 5:17

17 (Jn 3:3; Ro 16:7) Therefore, if any man is in Christ,
he is a new creature. Old things have passed away.
Look, all things have become new.

17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature:
old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

"The trouble with turning over a new leaf," Gordon sighed,
"is that once you've done it twice, you're right back where
you started." Gordon, in his mid-fifties, had his job
"canceled" by a company wanting to cut back on retirement payments.
Out of work, with few prospects, he said wistfully,
"I wish I had the chance to start over again."
Many of us would echo Gordon's sentiments. Whether we have lost a job,
gone through a divorce, moved to another part of the country, or
experienced some lesser crisis, we often long for the chance to
begin again, fresh, without the shadow of past mistakes following us.
God's word offers just such an opportunity. Anyone who is in Christ,
Paul says in 2 Cor 5:17, is a "new creation". For the Christian, the past
is truly past - "all things are become new". In the forgiveness
and restoration of God's grace we can leave the past behind,
with all its mistakes, and enter into new life.
And the promise is not just for the newly saved. Those of us who
have been Christians for years need to hear the truth of 2 Cor 5:17 again,
for we accumulated some "new mistakes" since we came to Christ. Anyone who
is in Christ is a new creation; the freedom of forgiveness, of
"starting over" is available to all who call upon the name of the Lord.
We cannot every really "start over" simply by establishing New Year's
resolutions or turning over a new leaf. Only God gives us that opportunity;
his grace allows us to clear away the rubble of the past and begin again.
Everything becomes new in God's loving forgiveness.

Application

In Whitehorse the Muslim population grew from 2 families
in 2001 to more than 60 people in 2014. Originally meeting in a church,
they now meet for prayer service in a former office space.

Pray for Muslims and believers in Whitehorse to come together,
and for Muslims to find faith in Jesus Christ.

Northwest Territories (NWT)

NWT population (2015) 43600 Muslim (est) 473

The Muslim community of Yellowknife has grown from 275 to 330 un the past year.
To replace their inadequate facility, they are planning a C$2 to C$2.5 million
Islamic Centre.

Pray that the Muslims in Yellowknife and all of the NWT will awaken to
spiritual hunger and be open to saving faith in Jesus Christ.

Nunavut (NU)

NU total population (2015) 36600 Muslim (est) 86

The Islamic Centre of Iqaluit now claim about 100 Muslims and have surpassed
80 % of their funding goal to building the first mosque in this territory.
Their stated goal is "To spread the message of Islam
in the far northern reaches of Canada."

Pray that believers in Iqaluit take up Jesus' command to love and reach
their Muslim neighbours with the Gospel.

When the new moon is sighted it marks the beginning of t he new Islamic month
and Eid al-Fitr, the "Festival of Breaking the Fast", will start! After 30 days
of fasting, the Eid celebration at the end of Ramadan is a joyful time that
usually lasts about 3 days. Muslims will buy new clothes, exchange gifts and,
of course, enjoy special foods. In Muslim-majority nations, the streets may be
decorated and festivals will be held.
For many Muslims, Eid-al-Fitr begins with communal prayers at daybreak and the
distribution of money (zakat) to the poor, which is one of the 5 pillars of
Islam.
You can greet Muslim friends during this time by saying "Eid Mubarak",
which means Blessed Eid!"
Ramadan is over for this year, but you can continue to pray for Muslims you
know, and Muslims around the world:
- Despite the unsettling developments in our world today that involve actions
in the name of Islam, there is at the same time a largely untold story about
unprecedented movement to Christ among Muslims. There have been more such
movements of thousands or more new disciples among Muslims in the last three
decades or so than in all the previous history of Christian Muslim
relationships! Pray for this momentum to continue.

Acts 2:12-17 : 17 12 They were all amazed and perplexed, saying to each other,
"What does this mean?"
13 (1Co 14:23) Others mocking said, "These men are full of new wine."

Peter's Speech at Pentecost

14 (Ac 1:26) But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice
and said to them, "Men of Judea and all you who dwell in Jerusalem,
let this be known to you, and listen to my words.
15 For these are not drunk, as you suppose,
since it is the third hour of the day.
16 But this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:
17 (Isa 44:3; Ac 10:45) 'In the last days it shall be,' says God,
'that I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh;

- Pray for Christian workers an organisations focused on seeing effective
discipleship movements among Muslim people.

- Ask the Holy Spirit to continue to inspire you to have god's heart for
Muslims, to see them as He does, and to be the light that then to Jesus.

Matthew 5:14-15 : 14 "You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a
hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do men light a candle and put it under
a basket, but on a candlestick. And it gives light to all who are in the
house."

Ideas for prayer

- Pray for opportunities to show the love of Christ to Muslims around you
- Pray for, and offer generous hospitality to, those you know who are serving
Christ among Muslim people -

Romans 12:13 "contribute to the needs of the saints, practice hospitality."
- When you gather with fellow believers, remember to pray for Muslims
throughout the year and encourage them to also participate in 30 Days!

My paternal side is of Muslim heritage and will offer this section to further
call for Muslim converts to Christian and any other converts to Christianity

that God's Spirit would influence

Advent Day 27

FRIDAY, FOURTH WEEK OF ADVENT

Early Offering

to be taxed with Mary, his betrothed wife, who was with child.

Luke mentions that Mary was "great with child" (KJV) so candidly 
that we don't pause to ponder how difficult it

must have been for her to travel all the way (about 70 miles!) from Nazareth 
in Galilee to Bethlehem in Judea. Even more significant, the Christ Child 
she carried must have been jostled and jarred by the movement, Loo.


Those of us who use statements of faith in our worship services declare

in the Apostles' Creed that Jesus "suffered under Pontius Pilate, was 
crucified ... " I believe instead we should say, "suffered, under Pontius 
Pilate was crucified" to be more accurate to the original. Jesus suffered 
all his life, not just under Pilate. When we reflect on the appalling journey 
that he endured in the womb, we might imagine that his sufferings on our 
behalf began even before he was born. What amazing love that Christ sustained 
such adversity for us!

Jesus Christ, your afflictions for us were more than we can
conceive. How can we ever thank you appropriately? Amen.

There are many travelers who make their way to Yellowknife
throughout the course of the year. Gaggles of tourists come from far
off to bask in the amazing aurora borealis - the northern lights that
seem to dance and play in the night sky. People come to check out
this unique mining town turned city in the middle of nowhere. Others
come to the capital from various outlying communities for a variety
of reasons. Some come for work, or to see family. Some come and
cannot go back.
In Yellowknife, I've seen many people who have come only to find
there is no place for them at the inn. Nowhere to stay that is
welcoming, warm, private and safe. Many sleep in doorways or
stairwells to escape the cold, while some seek comfort in addiction,
or warmth in an unwelcome bed.
I wonder how Mary and Joseph felt traveling to Bethlehem, only to
find no place to stay. Tired and extremely pregnant, Mary gives birth
not in a hospital or hotel, but in a stable. The Saviour of the world is
born into the world in a place of last resort - of inadequate welcome.
Yet the space in which he is born does matter. It reminds us that
there is no space, or place where God does not seek to be present in
our world. Rather, God breaks in and dwells with us - all of us. This
is part of God's radical welcome in Jesus. There is always room in
his love for all people, no matter where they come from.
Gracious God, we give you thanks that you are a God who is
revealed in unexpected places and people. During this season of
Advent, make room in our hearts for you and our neighbour. In
Jesus' name we pray, Amen.

Pray for Muslims and believers in Whitehorse and the Yukon to come together,
and for Muslims to find faith in Jesus Christ.

Pray for Muslims and believers in Yellowknife to come together,
and for Muslims to find faith in Jesus Christ. 

Pray that believers in Iqaluit take up Jesus' command to love and reach
their Muslim neighbours with the Gospel. 

- Pray for opportunities to show the love of Christ to Muslims around you
- Pray for, and offer generous hospitality to, those you know who are serving
Christ among Muslim people - 
Romans 12:13 "contribute to the needs of the saints, practice hospitality."
- When you gather with fellow believers, remember to pray for Muslims 
throughout the year and encourage them to also participate in 30 Days! 

Pray the the Holy Spirit will influence our governmental leaders
as they make vital decisions that shape Canadian Society 

Jesus Christ, your afflictions for us were more than we can
conceive. How can we ever thank you appropriately? Amen.
