DEUTERONOMY 33

Moses Blesses Israel

Ge 49:1-28

1 (Jos 14:6) Now this is the blessing with which Moses, the man of God, 
blessed the children of Israel before his death. 
2 (Hab 3:3; Ac 7:53) He said:
The Lord came from Sinai and rose up from Seir to them;
He shone forth from Mount Paran,
and He came with ten thousands of holy ones;
from His right hand went a fiery lawOr flashing lightning. for them.
3 (Lk 10:39; Hos 11:1) Surely, He loved the people;
all His holy ones are in Your hand,
and they sit down at Your feet;
everyone receives Your words.
4 (Ps 119:111; Jn 1:17) Moses decreed to us a law,
the inheritance of the assembly of Jacob.
5 (Dt 32:15) He was king over Jeshurun,
when the heads of the people and the tribes of Israel were gathered together.
6 (Ge 49:3-4) Let Reuben live, and not die,
and let not his men be few.
7 (Ge 49:8-12) This is the blessing to Judah. He said:
Listen, O Lord, to the voice of Judah,
and bring him to his people;
may his hands contend for them,
and may You help him against his enemies.
8 (Ex 17:7; 28:30) Of Levi he said:
Let Your Thummim and Your Urim be with Your godly one,
whom You tested at Massah,
and with whom You contended at the waters of Meribah,
9 who said to his father and to his mother,
"I have not seen him,"
and he did not acknowledge his brothers
or know his own children,
for they have kept Your word
and guarded Your covenant.
10 (Lev 10:11; Ps 51:19) They will teach Jacob Your judgments
and Israel Your law.
They will put incense before You
and the whole burnt offerings on your altar.
11 (2Sa 24:23; Eze 20:40-41) Bless, O Lord, his substance,
and accept the work of his hands;
run through the loins of them that rise against him
and of them that hate him,
so that they rise never again.
12 Of Benjamin he said:
The beloved of the Lord
will dwell in safety by Him,
and the Lord will protect him all day long;
he will dwell between His shoulders.
13 (Ge 49:22-26) Of Joseph he said:
May his land be blessed of the Lord,
from the harvest of the heavens,
by the dew,
and by the deep crouching beneath,
14 by the precious fruits brought forth by the sun,
and by the choice things put forth by the moon,
15 (Hab 3:6; Ge 49:26) by the finest things of the ancient mountains,
and by the choice things of the everlasting hills,
16 (Ex 3:2-4; Ps 24:1) by the best things of the earth and its fullness,
and by the goodwill of Him who dwelt in the bush.
May the blessing rest on the head of Joseph,
on top of the head of him who was separated from his brothers.
17 (Nu 23:22; 1Ki 22:11; Ps 44:5) His glory is like the firstborn of his bull,
and his horns are like the horns of a wild ox;
with them he will push the peoples together to the ends of the earth;
they are the ten thousands of Ephraim,
and they are the thousands of Manasseh.
18 (Ge 49:13-15) Of Zebulun he said:
Rejoice, Zebulun, in your going outside,
and Issachar in your tents.
19 (Ps 4:5; Isa 2:3) They will call the peoples to the mountain;
there they will offer sacrifices of righteousness,
for they will draw out the abundance of the seas
and the treasures hid in the sand.
20 (Ge 49:19) Of Gad he said:
Blessed be he who enlarges Gad;
he dwells as a lion
and tears an arm and the crown of a head.
21 (Jos 1:14) He provided the first part for himself,
because there, in a portion of the ruler, he was seated.
He came with the heads of the people.
He executed the justice of the Lord,
and His ordinances with Israel.
22 (Jos 19:47; Jdg 18:27) Of Dan he said:
Dan is a lion’s whelp;
he will leap forth from Bashan.
23 (Ge 49:21; Jos 19:32-39) Of Naphtali he said:
O Naphtali, satisfied with favor
and full with the blessing of the Lord,
possess the west and the south.
24 (Ge 49:20; Job 29:6) Of Asher he said:
May Asher be blessed with children;
may he be acceptable to his brothers,
and may he dip his foot in oil.A metaphor depicting prosperity.
25 Your sandals will be iron and brass;
according to your days, so shall be your strength.
26 (Ex 15:11; Ps 104:3) There is none like the God of Jeshurun,
who rides through the heavens to help you,
and in His majesty through the skies.
27 (Ge 49:24; Ps 90:1-2) The eternal God is your refuge,
and underneath you are the everlasting arms;
He will drive out the enemy before you,
and will say, "Destroy them."
28 (Nu 23:9; Ge 27:28) Israel dwells in safety;
the fountain of Jacob will be secluded
in a land of grain and new wine;
its heavens will rain down dew.
29 (2Sa 7:23; Ps 115:9-11) Blessed are you, O Israel!
Who is like you,
a people saved by the Lord,
the shield of your help,
who is the sword of your majesty!
Your enemies will cringe before you,
and you will tread upon their high places.

[2] And he said, The LORD came from Sinai, and rose up from Seir unto them;

from his right hand went a fiery law for them.
[3] Yea, he loved the people; all his saints are in thy hand: and they sat
down at thy feet; every one shall receive of thy words.
[4] Moses commanded us a law, even the inheritance of the congregation of
Jacob.
[5] And he was king in Jeshurun, when the heads of the people and the tribes
of Israel were gathered together.
[6] Let Reuben live, and not die; and let not his men be few.
[7] And this is the blessing of Judah: and he said, Hear, LORD, the voice of
Judah, and bring him unto his people: let his hands be sufficient for him;
and be thou an help to him from his enemies.
[8] And of Levi he said, Let thy Thummim and thy Urim be with thy holy one,
whom thou didst prove at Massah, and with whom thou didst strive at the
waters of Meribah;
[9] Who said unto his father and to his mother, I have not seen him; neither
did he acknowledge his brethren, nor knew his own children: for they have
observed thy word, and kept thy covenant.
[10] They shall teach Jacob thy judgments, and Israel thy law: they shall

[11] Bless, LORD, his substance, and accept the work of his hands: smite
through the loins of them that rise against him, and of them that hate him,

and he shall thrust out the enemy from before thee; and shall say, Destroy
them.
[28] Israel then shall dwell in safety alone: the fountain of Jacob shall be
upon a land of corn and wine; also his heavens shall drop down dew.
[29] Happy art thou, O Israel: who is like unto thee, O people saved by the
LORD, the shield of thy help, and who is the sword of thy excellency! and
thine enemies shall be found liars unto thee; and thou shalt tread upon
their high places.

PSALMS 91

1 He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High
shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
2 (Ps 63:1; 84:2) I will say of the Lord, "He is my refuge and my fortress,
my God in whom I trust."
3 (Ps 79:10; 80:5) Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the hunter
and from the deadly pestilence.
4 (Isa 30:29; Ps 62:8) He shall cover you with His feathers,
and under His wings you shall find protection;
His faithfulness shall be your shield and wall.
5 (Ps 42:11; 43:5) You shall not be afraid of the terror by night,
nor of the arrow that flies by day;
6 (2Sa 17:22; Dt 3:8-9) nor of the pestilence that pursues in darkness,
nor of the destruction that strikes at noonday.
7 (Ps 88:7; Jnh 2:3) A thousand may fall at your side
and ten thousand at your right hand,
but it shall not come near you.

and see the reward of the wicked.

14 Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him;
I will set him on high, because he has known My name.
15 He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble,
and I will deliver him and honor him.
16 With long life I will satisfy him
and show him My salvation.

Psalm 91

1 He that dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High
Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
2 I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress:
My God; in him will I trust.

And from the noisome pestilence.
4 He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust:
His truth shall be thy shield and buckler.

DEUTERONOMY 34

The Death of Moses

1 (Dt 32:49; Nu 27:12) Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, 
to the top of Pisgah, which is opposite Jericho. Then the Lord showed him all 
the land-from Gilead to Dan, 
2 (Dt 11:24) and all Naphtali and the land of Ephraim and Manasseh, 
and all the land of Judah, to the Mediterranean Sea, 
3 (Jdg 1:16; 3:13) and the Negev and the plain of the valley of Jericho,
the city of palm trees, as far as Zoar. 
4 (Ge 12:7; 28:13) The Lord said to him, "This is the land which I swore
to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, saying,
'I will give it to your descendants.' I have caused you to see it with 
your eyes, but you will not cross over there."
5 (Dt 32:50; Jos 1:1-2) So Moses, the servant of the Lord, died there 
in the land of Moab, according to the word of the Lord.
6 (Jude 1:9) He buried him in a valley in the land of Moab, 
opposite Beth Peor, but no man knows of his burial place to this day. 
7 (Ge 27:1; Dt 31:2) Moses was 120 years old when he died. 
His eye was not dim, nor was his vitality diminished. 
8 (Ge 50:3; 50:10) The children of Israel wept for Moses 
in the plains of Moab thirty days. Then the days of weeping 
and mourning for Moses were ended.
9 (Isa 11:2; Da 6:3) Now Joshua, the son of Nun, was full of the spirit 
of wisdom, for Moses had laid his hands on him. And the children 
of Israel - listened to him and did as the Lord commanded Moses.
10 (Ex 33:11) Since then there has not arisen a prophet in Israel 
like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face, 
11 (Dt 4:34; 7:19) in all the signs and wonders which the Lord sent him 
to do in the land of Egypt, to Pharaoh, to all his servants, 
and to all his land, 
12 and by all that mighty power and by all the great terror which Moses 
displayed in the sight of all Israel.

had laid his hands upon him: and the children of Israel hearkened unto him,
and did as the LORD commanded Moses.
[10] And there arose not a prophet since in Israel like unto Moses, whom the
LORD knew face to face,
[11] In all the signs and the wonders, which the LORD sent him to do in the
land of Egypt to Pharaoh, and to all his servants, and to all his land,
[12] And in all that mighty hand, and in all the great terror which Moses

Isaiah 43:1-7

The Redeemer of Israel

I have called you by your name; you are Mine.
2 (Ps 66:12; Da 3:25-27) When you pass through waters,
I will be with you.
And through the rivers,
they shall not overflow you.
When you walk through the fire,
you shall not be burned,
nor shall the flame kindle on you.
3 (Ex 20:2; Pr 21:18) For I am the Lord your God,
the Holy One of Israel, your Savior;
I gave Egypt for your ransom,
Ethiopia and Seba in your place.
4 (Ex 19:5-6) Since you were precious in My sight, you have been honorable,
and I have loved you;
therefore, I will give men for you,
and people for your life.

One day, while serving as my mom's live-in caregiver, we visited an art 
exhibit. We were emotionally and physically drained. I gazed at two wooden row
boats filled with colorful blown-glass shapes inspired by Japanese fishing 
lures and flower arrangements. The display Ikebana and Float Boats sat in 
front of a black wall on a reflective surface. Speckled, spotted, 
and striped glass orbs, like oversized gumballs, were piled into 
the smaller boat. From the hull of the second boat, long, twisted, 
and curved glass sculptures rose like vibrant flames. The artist had shaped 
each piece of molten glass through the refining fires 
of the glassblowing process.

Tears streaked my cheeks as I imagined God's caring hand holding me 
and my mom - His beloved children - through our hardest days. As God shapes 
the character of His people through refining fires in life, He affirms that 
our hope comes from being known and knowing we belong to Him (Isaiah 43:1). 
Though we can't escape hardship, God promises to protect us 
and be present (v. 2). His identity and His love for us make His promises 
secure (vv. 3-4).

When life's circumstances heat up, we may feel fragile. We may even be 
fragile. But God holds us firmly in love, no matter how blazing hot 
the furnace gets. We are known. We are loved. We are His!

Week 7 Promises of Grace - Day 6 Humility and Exaltation

1 Peter 5:6-7

6 (Jas 4:10; Mt 23:12) Humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God,
that He may exalt you in due time.
7 (Ps 55:22; 37:5) Cast all your care upon Him, because He cares for you.

6 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God,
that he may exalt you in due time:
7 casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

"I was so humble I was given an award for humility," the pastor quipped.
"They gave me a humility plaque - but they had to take it back when I hung it
on my office wall."
Humility is rare among 20th Century Christians. Our pride takes two
seemingly contradictory forms: Self-exaltation and self-denial. But both
focus on self, not on God.
Francois Fenelon, 17th century French archbishop, From his
"Letters of Spiritual Counsel" wrote:
"He who so completely forget himself that he never thinks of self ... is
truly humble. If we had the light to discern it, we should see clearly that
when we think we are humbling ourselves we are exalting ourselves;
when we think we are annihilating ourselves we are seeking out own life."
True humility, as Fenelon implies, means recognising who we are in the light
of who God is. Excess of self-importance and low self-esteem are both
self-centered perspectives; true humility is God-centered.
When we humble ourselves, we become intensely aware of God and less
aware of ourselves. We can focus on his face and get our eyes off our own
image. We can stop worrying about how others perceive us. Such humbling
is difficult - as one 70-year-old saint joked, "It ain't the heat that gets
you, it's the humility." But when we submit to him and fell the weight of the
"Mighty hand of God" upon us, we can forget ourselves, abandon
ourselves to his presence, and cast our cares upon him.

Application

a) What form does my pride usually take - self-exaltation or self-degradation?

True Wisdom

24 No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one,
and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other.
Ye cannot serve God and mammon.
25 Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat,
or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not
the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?
26 Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor
gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much
better than they?
27 Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?

for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.

34 Take therefore no thought for the morrow:
for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself.
Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

Saskatoon has seen quick growth in its Muslim population over the past
5 years, which maybe as high as 5000 today. Islamic leaders have 
focused specifically on this city , having twice already sent cohorts
of about 70 families to start mosques. There are now 7 Islamic centres
of worship and an Islamic madrassah (school) located right next to a 
Christian school.
Of particular concern recently is the number of young adults who grew up
in evangelical churches and converted to Islam. Most of these are young
women who were wooed by Muslim man and became emotionally bonded. 
Both prior to and after marrying, these women are known to convert to Islam.

Agree in prayer with us for:
- entire congregations and individual believers to catch God's heart
and passion for reaching Muslims in Saskatoon and the other growing
Muslim population centres of Saskatchewan.
- for the eyes and understanding of Canadian youth to be opened to the 
  spiritual reality of Islam, and not deceived nor manipulated into
  converting to a religion which cannot offer assurance of salvation. 
- for the few workers among Muslims now engaged there, and for many more
  to be raised up into effective witness.
- for prayer and training events that are starting in Saskatoon 
  to spread and grow to other cities.

Eve, one of the many thousands of Palestianians living in Jordan, 
came to our clinic with back pain. Amongst the many desperate 
and demanding people that arrive at the clinic every day, 
she had an especially kind and sincere heart.

Eve desires to please God and know the holy books. She attends Quranic classes
each week at her local mosque. We invited her to a woman's exercise class 
and quickly decided to train her to become the class coach. As we visited 
each week, she poured out her heart. The gossip and suspicion between extended
family members living in the same building was too much for her to handle. She
also struggled with pain from her husband's debt and rejection 
from her stepsons. She ached for peace.

We longed to read the Bible with Eve and she agreed! She drank in the prophet 
stories of the Old Testament, asking: "Do Christians still have to offer 
sacrifices, like Abraham and Moses did?"

"Wait and see", we replied.

Week by week, she asked her questions. Finally, we said, "We do have 
a sacrifice, but it is very expensive."

Curious, she mused, "Expensive? Maybe a camel?"

Eventually, we got to Isaiah 53. "This is about Jesus isn't it? 
He's the sacrifice", she observed, "But is he the sacrifice 
for ALL people?"

We replied excitedly, "Yes, his sacrifice is for ALL people who trust in Him!"

She looked flat. "I do believe Jesus is a prophet, but the Quran says he 
didn't die."

We weren't surprised, as this is a common misconception. But we were saddened.
Thankfully, the Word of God has captured Eve's heart.

"I'd still like to keep reading with you", she exclaimed.

How to Pray

Pray that God would stir courage and hunger in Muslim women to read God's 
Word. Pray that when they do encounter God's Word, that the Spirit opens 
their eyes to know who Jesus is and trust in him.

Pray for the many Palestinian refugees in Jordan and beyond to know Jesus 
as the Prince of Peace.

Ask God to enter and transform entire family networks through His Word.
