Re: Souls Continue Consciously In Comfort or Torment After Physical Death

Satan's Witnesses promote lies about the soul to "comfort" men with the 
false, heretical delusion gospel that men can reject Christ's atonement 
for their sins, yet still avoid conscious eternal torment. It isn't 
about what the Bible says to them, it's about what they want it to mean. 
They want a gospel that does not require faith in Christ in order to 
escape just eternal condemnation. Thus they fabricate lies about the 
eternal nature of the soul.

To begin, Satan's witnesses quote "die", as if that word simply and 
automatically caries the meaning of "cessation of existence". Death does 
not mean cessation of existence. Context after context shows it means to 
be separated from your body, and/or from God, not to cease to exist.

The Biblical Meaning of Death

Chapter 1: Physical Death is Separation from the Body

(1) "For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so also faith apart 
from works is dead." (James 2:26 ESV)

"Apart from the spirit." God's Word explicitly defines physical death 
here as the body being "apart" or separated from the spirit. It is not 
defined as the cessation of the spirit's existence, but simply as a 
state of separation between the two.

(2) "And as her soul was departing (for she was dying), she called his 
name Ben-oni; but his father called him Benjamin." (Genesis 35:18 ESV)

"Her soul was departing." The Bible describes Rachel's physical death as 
her soul "departing" from her. Her soul did not cease to exist when she 
died; it simply left her physical body.

(3) "And the Lord listened to the voice of Elijah. And the life of the 
child came into him again, and he revived." (1 Kings 17:22 ESV)

"The life of the child came into him again." When this child died 
physically, his life (or soul) had departed. Physical resurrection did 
not require the creation of a new life from nothing, but rather the 
return of the existing life to the physical body.

(4) "And her spirit returned, and she got up at once. And he directed 
that something should be given her to eat." (Luke 8:55 ESV)

"Her spirit returned." When Jesus raised Jairus's daughter from physical 
death, her spirit returned to her body. The spirit had not ceased to 
exist during her physical death; it had merely been separated from her 
body and returned at Christ's command.

(5) "Yes, we are of good courage, and we would rather be away from the 
body and at home with the Lord." (2 Corinthians 5:8 ESV)

"Away from the body." The Apostle Paul defines physical death for the 
believer as being "away from the body" and "at home with the Lord." This 
is a change of location and fellowship, not a loss of conscious 
existence. To die physically is to leave the home of the body to enter 
the presence of God.

(6) "My desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better." 
(Philippians 1:23 ESV)

"To depart and be with Christ." Paul describes physical death as a 
departure. A person who departs from a place does not cease to exist; 
they simply leave their current location to go to another. For the 
believer, this departure leads directly to conscious presence with Christ.

(7) "And he said to him, 'Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me 
in paradise.'" (Luke 23:43 ESV)

"Today you will be with me." Both Jesus and the repentant thief were 
about to die physically on the cross. Jesus did not promise the thief 
that they would enter non-existence, but that they would be consciously 
together in paradise on that very day.

First Proposition: Physical death is not the cessation of existence, but 
the separation of the conscious soul or spirit from the physical body.

Chapter 2: Spiritual Death is Separation from the Life of God

(1) "And you were dead in the trespasses and sins" (Ephesians 2:1 ESV)

"You were dead." The believers in Ephesus were physically alive, 
walking, and acting, yet God's Word declares that they were "dead." This 
shows that biblical death does not mean non-existence, but rather a 
state of spiritual ruin while one is still fully conscious and alive 
physically.

(2) "They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life 
of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness 
of heart." (Ephesians 4:18 ESV)

"Alienated from the life of God." This is the Bible's definition of 
spiritual death. To be spiritually dead is to be "alienated" or 
separated from the life of God. The person still exists, thinks, and 
acts, but is cut off from their Creator.

(3) "but she who is self-indulgent is dead even while she lives." (1 
Timothy 5:6 ESV)

"Dead even while she lives." It is a biblical impossibility for death to 
mean the cessation of existence, because a person can be physically 
living and spiritually "dead" at the exact same time.

(4) "For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is 
found. And they began to celebrate." (Luke 15:24 ESV)

"My son was dead." While the prodigal son was in the far country, he 
never ceased to exist. Yet, because he was completely separated from his 
father, he was described as "dead." When he returned, the separation 
ended, and he was "alive again."

(5) "but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not 
eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die." (Genesis 
2:17 ESV)

"In the day that you eat of it you shall surely die." Adam ate of the 
fruit, and he did not physically die that day; he lived physically for 
hundreds of years. However, he did die spiritually that very day. He was 
instantly separated from God's holy presence and was driven out of the 
Garden.

Second Proposition: Spiritual death is not the cessation of existence, 
but the separation and alienation of the soul from the life, fellowship, 
and presence of God.

General Proposition: In both its physical and spiritual aspects, the 
Bible teaches that death is a state of separation—either of the spirit 
from the body, or of the soul from God—and never the annihilation or 
cessation of conscious existence.

Thessalonians 1:10). Salvation cannot be earned; it is a free gift for
