Jeremiah 35
The Rekabites' Obedience
1 (2Ki 23:35; Jer 1:3) The word which came to Jeremiah from the Lord
in the days of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, saying:
2 (1Ch 2:55; 9:26) Go to the house of the Rekabites and speak to them,
and bring them into the house of the Lord, into one of the chambers,
and give them wine to drink.
3 Then I took Jaazaniah the son of Jeremiah, the son of Habazziniah,
and his brothers and all his sons and the whole house of the Rekabites,
4 (Dt 33:1; 2Ki 12:9) and I brought them into the house of the Lord,
into the chamber of the sons of Hanan, the son of Igdaliah, a man of God,
which was by the chamber of the officials, which was above the chamber
of Maaseiah the son of Shallum, the keeper of the door.
5 (Am 2:12) Then I set before the sons of the house of the Rekabites
pots full of wine and cups, and I said to them, "Drink wine."
6 (2Ki 10:15; Lev 10:9) But they said, "We will drink no wine. For Jonadab
the son of Rekab our father commanded us, saying,
'You shall not drink wine, neither you nor your sons forever.
7 (Ge 25:27; Ex 20:12) You shall not build a house, sow seed,
plant a vineyard, nor own one; but all your days you shall dwell in tents
so that you may live many days in the land where you sojourn.'
8 (Col 3:20; Pr 1:8-9) Thus we have obeyed the voice of Jonadab the son
of Rekab, our father, in all that he has charged us, to drink no wine all
our days, we, our wives, our sons, nor our daughters,
9 (1Ti 6:6; Ps 37:16) nor to build houses for us to dwell in;
and we do not have vineyard, or field, or seed.
10 But we have lived in tents only and have obeyed and done according
to all that Jonadab our father commanded us.
11 (Jer 8:14; 2Ki 24:1-2) But when Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon
came up into the land, we said, 'Come, and let us go to Jerusalem
before the army of the Chaldeans and before the army of the Arameans.'
So we have dwelt in Jerusalem."
12 Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah, saying:
13 (Jer 5:3; 32:33) Thus says the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel:
Go and tell the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem,
Will you not receive instruction by listening to My words? says the Lord.
14 (Isa 30:9; Jer 7:13) The words of Jona­dab the son of Rekab, that
he commanded his sons not to drink wine, are performed.
For to this day they drink none, but they obey their father's commandment.
However, I have spoken to you, rising early and speaking,
but you did not obey Me.
15 (Jer 18:11; 25:5-6) I also have sent to you all My servants the prophets,
rising up early and sending them, saying, "Return now every man
from his evil way and amend your deeds, and do not go after other gods
to serve them, and you will dwell in the land that I have given to you
and to your fathers." But you have not inclined your ear nor obeyed Me.
16 (Mal 1:6; Jer 35:14) Indeed, the sons of Jonadab the son of Rekab
have performed the commandment of their father, which he commanded
them, but this people has not obeyed Me.
17 (Isa 65:12; 66:4) Therefore thus says the Lord God of Hosts, the God
of Israel: I will bring upon Judah and upon all the inhabitants of Jerusalem
all the disaster that I have pronounced against them; because I have spoken
to them but they have not listened, and I have called them
but they have not answered.
18 (Ex 20:12; Eph 6:1-3) Jeremiah said to the house of the Rek­abites:
Thus says the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel: Because you have obeyed
the commandment of Jonadab your father and kept all his precepts
and done according to all that he has commanded you,
19 (Jer 15:19; 1Ch 2:55) therefore thus says the Lord of Hosts, the God
of Israel, Jonadab the son of Rekab shall not lack a man to stand
before Me always.

Jeremiah 35
[1] The word which came unto Jeremiah from the LORD in the days of
Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah, saying,
[2] Go unto the house of the Rechabites, and speak unto them, and bring them
into the house of the LORD, into one of the chambers, and give them wine to
drink.
[3] Then I took Jaazaniah the son of Jeremiah, the son of Habaziniah, and
his brethren, and all his sons, and the whole house of the Rechabites;
[4] And I brought them into the house of the LORD, into the chamber of the
sons of Hanan, the son of Igdaliah, a man of God, which was by the chamber
of the princes, which was above the chamber of Maaseiah the son of Shallum,
the keeper of the door:
[5] And I set before the sons of the house of the Rechabites pots full of
wine, and cups, and I said unto them, Drink ye wine.
[6] But they said, We will drink no wine: for Jonadab the son of Rechab our
father commanded us, saying, Ye shall drink no wine, neither ye, nor your
sons for ever:
[7] Neither shall ye build house, nor sow seed, nor plant vineyard, nor have
any: but all your days ye shall dwell in tents; that ye may live many days
in the land where ye be strangers.
[8] Thus have we obeyed the voice of Jonadab the son of Rechab our father in
all that he hath charged us, to drink no wine all our days, we, our wives,
our sons, nor our daughters;
[9] Nor to build houses for us to dwell in: neither have we vineyard, nor
field, nor seed:
[10] But we have dwelt in tents, and have obeyed, and done according to all
that Jonadab our father commanded us.
[11] But it came to pass, when Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon came up into
the land, that we said, Come, and let us go to Jerusalem for fear of the
army of the Chaldeans, and for fear of the army of the Syrians: so we dwell
at Jerusalem.
[12] Then came the word of the LORD unto Jeremiah, saying,
[13] Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Go and tell the men of
Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, Will ye not receive instruction to
hearken to my words? saith the LORD.
[14] The words of Jonadab the son of Rechab, that he commanded his sons not
to drink wine, are performed; for unto this day they drink none, but obey
their father's commandment: notwithstanding I have spoken unto you, rising
early and speaking; but ye hearkened not unto me.
[15] I have sent also unto you all my servants the prophets, rising up early
and sending them, saying, Return ye now every man from his evil way, and
amend your doings, and go not after other gods to serve them, and ye shall
dwell in the land which I have given to you and to your fathers: but ye have
not inclined your ear, nor hearkened unto me.
[16] Because the sons of Jonadab the son of Rechab have performed the
commandment of their father, which he commanded them; but this people hath
not hearkened unto me:
[17] Therefore thus saith the LORD God of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold,
I will bring upon Judah and upon all the inhabitants of Jerusalem all the
evil that I have pronounced against them: because I have spoken unto them,
but they have not heard; and I have called unto them, but they have not
answered.
[18] And Jeremiah said unto the house of the Rechabites, Thus saith the LORD
of hosts, the God of Israel; Because ye have obeyed the commandment of
Jonadab your father, and kept all his precepts, and done according unto all
that he hath commanded you:
[19] Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Jonadab the
son of Rechab shall not want a man to stand before me for ever. 

Jeremiah 36

Jeremiah's Scroll Is Burned

1 (Jer 25:1) In the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah,
king of Judah, this word came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying:
2 (Jer 30:2; 25:3; Ex 17:14) Take a scroll of a book, and write in it
all the words that I have spoken to you against Israel
and against Judah and against all the nations, from the day I spoke to you,
from the days of Josiah, even to this day.
3 (Jer 18:8; 26:3; Eze 12:3) It may be that the house of Judah will hear
all the disaster which I intend to do to them, so that every man
may turn from his evil way; then I will forgive their iniquity and their sin.
4 (Jer 32:12; 36:32) Then Jeremiah called Baruch the son of Neriah.
And Baruch wrote on a scroll at the dictation of Jeremiah
all the words of the Lord which He had spoken to him.
5 (Jer 32:2; 33:1) Jeremiah commanded Baruch, saying,
"I am shut in. I cannot go into the house of the Lord.
6 (Jer 36:8-9) Therefore go and read from the scroll that you have written
at my dictation the words of the Lord in the hearing of the people
in the house of the Lord on a fast day. And also you shall read them
in the ears of all Judah who come out of their cities.
7 (Jer 36:3; 2Ki 22:13) Perhaps their supplication will come before the Lord,
and everyone will turn from his evil way, for great is the anger
and the fury that the Lord has pronounced against this people."
8 (Jer 1:17) Baruch the son of Neriah did according to all that Jeremiah
the prophet commanded him, reading in the book the words of the Lord
in the house of the Lord.
9 (2Ch 20:3; Est 4:16) In the fifth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah,
king of Judah, in the ninth month, they proclaimed a fast
before the Lord to all the people in Jerusalem and to all the people
who came from the cities of Judah to Jerusalem.
10 (Jer 36:11; 26:10) Then Baruch read from the book the words of Jeremiah
in the house of the Lord, in the chamber of Gemariah the son of Shaphan
the scribe, in the higher court, at the entry of the New Gate of the house
of the Lord, in the ears of all the people.
11 When Micaiah the son of Gemariah, the son of Shaphan, had heard
out of the book all the words of the Lord,
12 (Jer 26:22; 2Ki 22:12) then he went down to the king's house,
into the scribe's chamber. And all the officials sat there, even Elishama
the scribe, and Delaiah the son of Shemaiah, and Elnathan the son of Akbor,
and Gemariah the son of Shaphan, and Zed­ekiah the son of Hananiah,
and all the other officials.
13 (2Ki 22:10) Then Micaiah declared to them all the words that he had heard
when Bar­uch read the book in the ears of the people.
14 (Jer 36:2) Then all the officials sent Jehudi the son of Nethaniah,
the son of Shelemiah, the son of Cushi, to Baruch, saying,
"Take in your hand the scroll from which you have read in the ears
of the people and come." So Baruch the son of Neriah took the scroll
in his hand and came to them.
15 They said to him, "Sit down now, and read it in our ears."
So Baruch read it in their ears.
16 (Jer 13:18; 36:24) When they heard all the words, they turned to
one another in fear and said to Baruch, "We will surely tell the king
of all these words."
17 (Jn 9:15) They also asked Baruch, saying, "Tell us now, how did you write
all these words? Was it at his mouth?"
18 (Jer 36:4) Then Baruch answered them, "He pronounced all these words
to me with his mouth, and I wrote them with ink in the book."
19 (1Ki 17:3; 18:4) Then the officials said to Baruch, "Go hide, you
and Jeremiah, and let no man know where you are."
20 (Jer 36:12) Then they went to the king in the court, but they laid up
the scroll in the chamber of Elishama the scribe, and told all the words
in the ears of the king.
21 (2Ki 22:10; 2Ch 34:18) So the king sent Jehudi to fetch the scroll,
and he took it out of Elishama the scribe's chamber. And Jehudi read it
in the ears of the king and in the ears of all the officials who stood
beside the king.
22 (Am 3:15) Now the king sat in the winter house in the ninth month,
and there was a fire burning on the hearth before him.
23 (1Ki 22:8; 22:27) As Jehudi read three or four columns, the king cut it
with a scribe's knife and cast it into the fire that was on the hearth,
until all the scroll was consumed in the fire that was on the hearth.
24 (Ps 36:1; Jer 36:16) Yet they were not afraid, nor did they tear their
garments, neither the king nor any of his servants who heard all these words.
25 (Ge 37:22; Jer 36:12) Although Elnathan and Delaiah and Gemariah
entreated the king not to burn the scroll, yet he would not listen to them.
26 (1Ki 19:1-3; 19:10) But the king commanded Jerahmeel
the son of Hammelech, and Seraiah the son of Azriel, and Shelemiah
the son of Abdeel to seize Baruch the scribe and Jeremiah the prophet.
But the Lord hid them.

Jeremiah 36
[1] And it came to pass in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah
king of Judah, that this word came unto Jeremiah from the LORD, saying,
[2] Take thee a roll of a book, and write therein all the words that I have
spoken unto thee against Israel, and against Judah, and against all the
nations, from the day I spake unto thee, from the days of Josiah, even unto
this day.
[3] It may be that the house of Judah will hear all the evil which I purpose
to do unto them; that they may return every man from his evil way; that I
may forgive their iniquity and their sin.
[4] Then Jeremiah called Baruch the son of Neriah: and Baruch wrote from the
mouth of Jeremiah all the words of the LORD, which he had spoken unto him,
upon a roll of a book.
[5] And Jeremiah commanded Baruch, saying, I am shut up; I cannot go into
the house of the LORD:
[6] Therefore go thou, and read in the roll, which thou hast written from my
mouth, the words of the LORD in the ears of the people in the LORD's house
upon the fasting day: and also thou shalt read them in the ears of all Judah
that come out of their cities.
[7] It may be they will present their supplication before the LORD, and will
return every one from his evil way: for great is the anger and the fury that
the LORD hath pronounced against this people.
[8] And Baruch the son of Neriah did according to all that Jeremiah the
prophet commanded him, reading in the book the words of the LORD in the
LORD's house.

Baruch read it in their ears.
[16] Now it came to pass, when they had heard all the words, they were
afraid both one and other, and said unto Baruch, We will surely tell the
king of all these words.
[17] And they asked Baruch, saying, Tell us now, How didst thou write all
these words at his mouth?
[18] Then Baruch answered them, He pronounced all these words unto me with
his mouth, and I wrote them with ink in the book.
[19] Then said the princes unto Baruch, Go, hide thee, thou and Jeremiah;
and let no man know where ye be.
[20] And they went in to the king into the court, but they laid up the roll
in the chamber of Elishama the scribe, and told all the words in the ears of
the king.
[21] So the king sent Jehudi to fetch the roll: and he took it out of
Elishama the scribe's chamber. And Jehudi read it in the ears of the king,
and in the ears of all the princes which stood beside the king.
[22] Now the king sat in the winterhouse in the ninth month: and there was a
fire on the hearth burning before him.
[23] And it came to pass, that when Jehudi had read three or four leaves, he
cut it with the penknife, and cast it into the fire that was on the hearth,
until all the roll was consumed in the fire that was on the hearth.
[24] Yet they were not afraid, nor rent their garments, neither the king,
nor any of his servants that heard all these words.
[25] Nevertheless Elnathan and Delaiah and Gemariah had made intercession to
the king that he would not burn the roll: but he would not hear them.
[26] But the king commanded Jerahmeel the son of Hammelech, and Seraiah the
son of Azriel, and Shelemiah the son of Abdeel, to take Baruch the scribe
and Jeremiah the prophet: but the LORD hid them.

Jeremiah and Baruch Rewrite the Scroll

27 Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah after the king had burned
the book and the words which Baruch had written at the mouth of Jeremiah,
saying:
28 (Zec 1:5-6) Take again another scroll and write in it all the former words
that were in the first book, which Jehoiakim the king of Judah has burned.
29 (Isa 30:10; Jer 26:9) You shall say to Jehoiakim king of Judah:
Thus says the Lord: You have burned this book, saying,
Why have you written in it that the king of Babylon will certainly come
and destroy this land, and will cause man and beast to cease from here?
30 (Jer 22:30; 2Ki 24:12-15) Therefore thus says the Lord concerning
Jehoiakim king of Judah: He shall have no one to sit on the throne of David.
And his dead body shall be cast out to the heat of the day
and the frost of the night.
31 (Pr 29:1; Jer 19:15) I will also punish him and his seed
and his servants for their iniquity. And I will bring upon them
and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem and upon the men of Judah
all the disaster that I have pronounced against them; but they did not listen.
32 (Jer 36:4; 36:18) Then Jeremiah took another scroll and gave it
to Baruch the scribe, the son of Neriah who wrote in it from the mouth
of Jeremiah all the words of the book which Jehoiakim king of Judah
had burned in the fire. And there were added to them many like words.

[27] Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah, after that the king had
burned the roll, and the words which Baruch wrote at the mouth of Jeremiah,
saying,
[28] Take thee again another roll, and write in it all the former words that
were in the first roll, which Jehoiakim the king of Judah hath burned.
[29] And thou shalt say to Jehoiakim the king of Judah, Thus saith the LORD;
Thou hast burned this roll, saying, Why hast thou written therein, saying,
The king of Babylon shall certainly come and destroy this land, and shall
cause to cease from thence man and beast?
[30] Therefore thus saith the LORD of Jehoiakim king of Judah; He shall have
none to sit upon the throne of David: and his dead body shall be cast out in
the day to the heat, and in the night to the frost.
[31] And I will punish him and his seed and his servants for their iniquity;
and I will bring upon them, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and upon
the men of Judah, all the evil that I have pronounced against them; but they
hearkened not.
[32] Then took Jeremiah another roll, and gave it to Baruch the scribe, the
son of Neriah; who wrote therein from the mouth of Jeremiah all the words of
the book which Jehoiakim king of Judah had burned in the fire: and there
were added besides unto them many like words. 

Jeremiah 37
Jeremiah Warns Zedekiah

1 (2Ki 24:17; Jer 22:24) And King Zedekiah the son of Josiah reigned
instead of Koniah the son of Jehoiakim, whom Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon
made king in the land of Judah.
2 (Ki 24:19-20; 2Ch 36:12-16) But neither he nor his servants nor the people
of the land listened to the words of the Lord, which He spoke through
the prophet Jeremiah.
3 (Jer 21:1-2; 1Ki 13:6; Jer 29:25) But Zedekiah the king sent Jehukal
the son of Shelemiah and Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah,
the priest, to the prophet Jeremiah, saying,
"Please pray to the Lord our God for us."
4 (Jer 37:15; 32:2-3) Now Jeremiah was still coming in and going
out among the people, for they had not yet put him into prison.
5 (Eze 17:15; 2Ki 24:7) At that time Pharaoh's army had come out of Egypt,
and when the Chaldeans who were besieging Jerusalem heard the report
of them, they departed from Jerusalem.
6 Then the word of the Lord came to the prophet Jeremiah, saying:
7 (La 4:17; 2Ki 22:18) Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: Thus you shall
say to the king of Judah who sent you to Me to inquire of Me:
Pharaoh's army which has come out to help you shall return to Egypt,
to its own land.
8 (Jer 38:23; 39:2-8) The Chaldeans will come again and fight against
this city, and take it, and burn it with fire.
9 (Ob 1:3; Mt 24:4-5) Thus says the Lord: Do not deceive yourselves,
saying, "The Chaldeans will surely depart from us," for they will not depart.
10 (Lev 26:36-38; Isa 30:17) For though you had struck the whole army
of the Chaldeans who fight against you and there remained
but wounded men among them, yet every man would rise up in his tent
and burn this city with fire.

[1] And king Zedekiah the son of Josiah reigned instead of Coniah the son of
Jehoiakim, whom Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon made king in the land of
Judah.
[2] But neither he, nor his servants, nor the people of the land, did
hearken unto the words of the LORD, which he spake by the prophet Jeremiah.
[3] And Zedekiah the king sent Jehucal the son of Shelemiah and Zephaniah
the son of Maaseiah the priest to the prophet Jeremiah, saying, Pray now
unto the LORD our God for us.
[4] Now Jeremiah came in and went out among the people: for they had not
put him into prison.
[5] Then Pharoah's army was come forth out of Egypt: and when the Chaldeans
that besieged Jerusalem heard tidings of them, they departed from Jerusalem.
[6] Then came the word of the LORD unto the prophet Jeremiah, saying,
[7] Thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel; Thus shall ye say to the king of
Judah, that sent you unto me to inquire of me; Behold, Pharaoh's army, which
is come forth to help you, shall return to Egypt into their own land.
[8] And the Chaldeans shall come again, and fight against this city, and
take it, and burn it with fire.
[9] Thus saith the LORD; Deceive not yourselves, saying, The Chaldeans shall
surely depart from us: for they shall not depart.
[10] For though ye had smitten the whole army of the Chaldeans that fight
against you, and there remained but wounded men among them, yet should they
rise up every man in his tent, and burn this city with fire. 

Jeremiah Imprisoned

11 Now when the army of the Chaldeans had withdrawn from Jerusalem
at the approach of Pharaoh's army,
12 (Jer 1:1) Jeremiah set out from Jerusalem to go into the land of Benjamin
to take possession of his property there among the people.
13 (Jer 38:7; Zec 14:10) When he was in the Gate of Benjamin,
a captain of the guard was there whose name was Irijah
the son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah.
And he seized Jeremiah the prophet, saying,
"You are falling away to the Chaldeans!"
14 (Ps 27:12; 52:1-2) But Jeremiah said, "It is false! I am not falling away
to the Chaldeans," but he did not listen to him. So Irijah seized Jeremiah
and brought him to the officials.
15 (Jer 38:26; Ge 39:20) Therefore the officials were wrathful with Jeremiah,
and struck him, and put him in prison in the house of Jonathan the scribe;
for they had made that the prison.
16 (Jer 38:6; 38:10-13) For Jeremiah had entered the dungeon, that is,
the vaulted cell, and Jeremiah had remained there many days.
17 (Jer 21:7; 1Ki 14:1-4) Then Zedekiah the king sent and took him out;
and the king asked him secretly in his house,
and said, "Is there any word from the Lord?"
And Jeremiah said, "There is!" Then he said,
"You shall be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon."
18 (Jn 10:32; Ac 25:8) Moreover Jeremiah said to King Zed­ekiah,
"How have I sinned against you or against your servants
or against this people that you have put me in prison?
19 (2Ki 3:13; Jer 2:28) Where now are your prophets who prophesied
to you, saying, 'The king of Babylon will not come against you,
nor against this land'?
20 (Jer 36:7) Therefore now please listen, O my lord the king.
Please let my supplication be accepted before you, that you not cause me
to return to the house of Jonathan the scribe, lest I die there."
21 (Jer 38:13; 38:28; 32:2) Then Zedekiah the king commanded that they
should commit Jeremiah into the court of the prison and give him daily
a piece of bread out of the bakers' street, until all the bread
in the city was finished. Thus Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison.

[11] And it came to pass, that when the army of the Chaldeans was broken up
from Jerusalem for fear of Pharaoh's army,
[12] Then Jeremiah went forth out of Jerusalem to go into the land of
Benjamin, to separate himself thence in the midst of the people.
[13] And when he was in the gate of Benjamin, a captain of the ward was
there, whose name was Irijah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah; and
he took Jeremiah the prophet, saying, Thou fallest away to the Chaldeans.
[14] Then said Jeremiah, It is false; I fall not away to the Chaldeans. But
he hearkened not to him: so Irijah took Jeremiah, and brought him to the
princes.
[15] Wherefore the princes were wroth with Jeremiah, and smote him, and put
him in prison in the house of Jonathan the scribe: for they had made that
the prison.
[16] When Jeremiah was entered into the dungeon, and into the cabins, and
Jeremiah had remained there many days;
[17] Then Zedekiah the king sent, and took him out: and the king asked him
secretly in his house, and said, Is there any word from the LORD? And
Jeremiah said, There is: for, said he, thou shalt be delivered into the hand
of the king of Babylon.

"What a cruel act to be untruthful," Daniel Ladinsky once wrote in a poem that
contrasts relationships built on trust with those damaged by lies. Inspired by
German theologian and monk Meister Eckhart, he described truthful, loving 
words as "wonderful spices mixed into the days." But lies are like earthquakes
in the mind and poison to the soul: "Havoc is created in the mind that can no 
longer trust someone once loved . . . . a plague is spread by one who cannot 
tell the truth."

The imagery of a plague spread by falsehoods might seem stark. But to take 
speech seriously resonates with how our words and their impact are described 
throughout Scripture. When Paul explains to new believers the difference 
between life before and after their union with Jesus, words take center stage.
"Do not lie to each other," the apostle emphasises, "since you have taken off 
your old self with its practices and have put on the new self"
(Colossians 3:9-10).

There are many reasons to be tempted to lie or distort the truth. Sometimes 
we might think it's the best way to protect ourselves or others. But through 
Christ's love, through His Spirit at work in our hearts, we learn a different 
way - one transformed by "compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness 
and patience" (3:12). And we learn how forgiveness and love can create the 
kind of trust and peace that brings rest to our souls (v. 15).

2 Tim 3:16-17

"I can't wait till I get big!" Marc, age 5, declared. "Then I do
what I want!" Most of us, as children, shared Marc's statement.
We looked forward to that "magic age" - 16, 18, 21 - when we
would be adults: mature, able to make our own decisions.
We find, of course, that adulthood has its own share of
difficulties and conflicts. But even in our spiritual lives
we often long for a "magic moment" of maturity. As one woman
confessed, "Ever since I became a Christian, I've hoped I'd wake up
one morning to find myself mature."
But growth in the spiritual life comes gradually, like growth in
the physical world. In 2 Tim 2:16-17, Paul gives the young pastor
Timothy an important key to spiritual growing up - the Word of God.
The Word is "profitable" or "useful," Paul says, for "teaching" - that is,
for developing a right concept of God. Scripture offers "rebuke" when
we go wrong, "correction" to set us on the right path, and "training
in righteousness" so that we can grow in the image of Christ.
The purpose of Scripture's work in our lives, Paul emphasises,
is that we may be "perfect" - mature, equipped for the good things
God has for us to do. Such maturity does not come easily
or instantaneously, but it does come - sometimes imperceptibly -
as we submit our lives to the transforming power of God's Word.

Application

Moncton, followed by Fredericton and Saint John, each have a growing Muslim
population in New Brunswick, In 2007, the building that was formerly a Baptist
church was converted into Moncton's 1st mosque. The University of Moncton
also has a Muslim student association hosting prayer services, fellowship
getherings, and outreaches on campus.
Fredericton also has one mosque and a Muslim student association serving the
campuses of the University of New Brunswick and St. Thomas University.
Fredericton's Muslim population consists in 2014 of about 50 families,
and between 300 to 400 university students.
Saint John is home to the 1st Muslim Association for the province,
which also helped foster the Islamic associations of Fredericton and Moncton.
a 'musalla', or prayer location that is not officially structured as a mosque,
has been established in the Uptown area with the intention of seeing it grow
into a 2nd official place of Muslim worship. Demand for this new location has
been primarily for university students moving into the area.

Pray for Muslims and New Brunswick
- that the eyes of pastors, believers and entire congregations will be opened
to see this growing body of Muslims, and their hearts will be opened
to sharing God's love in Jesus Christ with them

- that intentional ministries to Muslims will grow and flourish in these
areas of concentration

- that cooperative CNNMM Networks will form to really, encourage,

When the new moon is sighted it marks the beginning of t he new Islamic month
and Eid al-Fitr, the "Festival of Breaking the Fast", will start! After 30 days
of fasting, the Eid celebration at the end of Ramadan is a joyful time that
usually lasts about 3 days. Muslims will buy new clothes, exchange gifts and,
of course, enjoy special foods. In Muslim-majority nations, the streets may be
decorated and festivals will be held.
For many Muslims, Eid-al-Fitr begins with communal prayers at daybreak and the
distribution of money (zakat) to the poor, which is one of the 5 pillars of
Islam.
You can greet Muslim friends during this time by saying "Eid Mubarak",
which means Blessed Eid!"
Ramadan is over for this year, but you can continue to pray for Muslims you
know, and Muslims around the world:
- Despite the unsettling developments in our world today that involve actions
in the name of Islam, there is at the same time a largely untold story about
unprecedented movement to Christ among Muslims. There have been more such
movements of thousands or more new disciples among Muslims in the last three
decades or so than in all the previous history of Christian Muslim
relationships! Pray for this momentum to continue.

Acts 2:12-17 : 17 12 They were all amazed and perplexed, saying to each other,
"What does this mean?"
13 (1Co 14:23) Others mocking said, "These men are full of new wine."

Peter's Speech at Pentecost

discipleship movements among Muslim people.

- Ask the Holy Spirit to continue to inspire you to have god's heart for
Muslims, to see them as He does, and to be the light that then to Jesus.

Matthew 5:14-15 : 14 "You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a
hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do men light a candle and put it under
a basket, but on a candlestick. And it gives light to all who are in the
house."

Ideas for prayer

- Pray for opportunities to show the love of Christ to Muslims around you
- Pray for, and offer generous hospitality to, those you know who are serving
Christ among Muslim people -

Romans 12:13 "contribute to the needs of the saints, practice hospitality."
- When you gather with fellow believers, remember to pray for Muslims
throughout the year and encourage them to also participate in 30 Days!

I struggled with depression, brokenness, and addiction to

I) Pray for the leaders of Ontario,
that God's Spirit would influence

prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings for everyone,
2 (Ezr 6:10) for kings and for all who are in authority,

and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior,
