  The Vote: The jury voted by secret ballot and found him guilty, with a 
narrow majority of roughly 280 to 220.

  The Penalty: When asked to propose an alternative punishment to death, 
Socrates jokingly suggested he should be given free meals at the town 
hall for his service to Athens. This angered the jury, leading them to 
vote for the death penalty by drinking hemlock poison.
