(I'd bought a couple extra when I ordered those converters) When the plug is IN on the phone side the phone gives a little buzz and the process starts. I added a phone case before I started carrying the thing, so maybe it's more difficult to seat in there and the newer cable didn't quite fit. Sorry for the false alarm.
