1) It might not be broken.

    Run a Linux LiveCD and test the touchpad in Linux.

    This might show that it is a driver issue in Windows blocking usage.
    Check Device Manager in Windows and see if the device is visible in 
Device Manager.
    Check to see if Device Manager shows an error code for the touchpad.

2) It might be broken because a cable inside the laptop has come loose.
    You would need to disassemble the unit, to visually inspect the cabling.

3) The integrated circuit on the touchpad subassembly could have
    failed, in which case the subassembly would need to be replaced.
    You would need to find an Acer parts site to find a replacement.

Thanks for the suggestions. I don't think that it is a problem of driver  as 
I have replaced the hard disk with one of backup dated to when the touchpad 
was still working and the device now continue not work.
I will try to check the connection of the flat cable.
