On June 30, 2008, Wal-Mart removed the hyphen from its logo and replaced the star with a Spark symbol. The store branding became "Walmart", with the corporate name remaining with the hyphen as "Wal-Mart". The new logo received mixed reviews from design critics who questioned whether the new logo was as bold as those of competitors, such as the Target bullseye, or as instantly recognizable as the previous company's logo, which was used for 18 years.[76] The new logo[77] made its debut on the company's website on July 1, 2008, and its U.S. locations updated store logos in the fall of 2008.[78] Walmart Canada started to adopt the logo for its stores in early 2009.[79]

The "Supercenter" name has since been phased out, with these stores now simply referred to as "Walmart", since the company introduced the new Walmart logo in 2008. However, the branding is still used in Walmart's Canadian stores (spelled as "Supercentre" in Canadian English).[148]

In June 2016, Walmart and Sam's Club announced that they would begin testing a last-mile grocery delivery that used services including Uber, Lyft, and Deliv, to bring customers' orders to their homes. Walmart customers would be able to shop using the company's online grocery service at grocery.walmart.com, then request delivery at checkout for a small fee. The first tests were planned to go live in Denver and Phoenix.[179] Walmart announced on March 14, 2018, that it would expand online delivery to 100 metropolitan regions in the United States, the equivalent of 40 percent of households, by the end of the year of 2018.[180]

Walmart's UK subsidiary Asda (which retained its name after being acquired by Walmart) is based in Leeds and accounted for 42.7 percent of 2006 sales of Walmart's international division. In contrast to the U.S. operations, Asda was originally and still remains primarily a grocery chain, but with a stronger focus on non-food items than most UK supermarket chains other than Tesco. In 2010 Asda acquired stores from Netto UK. In addition to small suburban Asda Supermarkets,[3] larger stores are branded Supercentres.[3] Other banners include Asda Superstores, Asda Living, and Asda Petrol Fueling Station.[2][3][287] In July 2015, Asda updated its logo featuring the Walmart Asterisks behind the first 'A' in the Logo. In May 2018, Walmart announced plans to sell Asda to rival Sainsbury's for $10.1 billion. Under the terms of the deal, Walmart would have received a 42% stake in the combined company and about 3 billion in cash.[288] However, in April 2019, the United Kingdom's Competition and Markets Authority blocked the proposed sale of Asda to Sainsburys.[289]

For many years, associates were identified in the store by their signature blue vest, but this practice was discontinued in June 2007 and replaced with khaki pants and polo shirts. The wardrobe change was part of a larger corporate overhaul to increase sales and rejuvenate the company's stock price.[326] In September 2014, the uniform was again updated to bring back a vest (paid for by the company) for store employees over the same polos and khaki or black pants paid for by the employee. The vest is navy blue for Walmart employees at Supercenters and discounts stores, lime green for Walmart Neighborhood Market employees, and yellow for self-check-out associates; door greeters, and customer service managers. All three state "Proud Walmart Associate" on the left breast and the "Spark" logo covering the back.[327] Reportedly one of the main reasons the vest was reintroduced was that some customers had trouble identifying employees.[328] In 2016, self-checkout associates, door greeters and customer service managers began wearing a yellow vest to be better seen by customers. By requiring employees to wear uniforms that are made up of standard "streetwear", Walmart is not required to purchase the uniforms or reimburse employees which are required in some states, as long as that clothing can be worn elsewhere. Businesses are only legally required to pay for branded shirts and pants or clothes that would be difficult to wear outside of work.[329]

Walmart introduced its Site-To-Store program in 2007, after testing the program since 2004 on a limited basis. The program allows walmart.com customers to buy goods online with a free shipping option, and have goods shipped to the nearest store for pickup.[333]

During a migration of the walmart.com retail platform to Facebook React and Node.js, the Electrode[420] project was created to power the e-commerce platform which serves 80 million visitors per month and 15 million items.

I've never seen these before anywhere, I've visited walmarts from new orleans up to chicago and only seen this one (and obviously wherever the photograph originates from). It's obviously the old walmart lettering, but I've always seen those as white, not red. Is there any significance behind this?

It just seems like walmart liked to used different color chemes in their store design around then as the walmart I usually go to opened in 04 or 05 and uses the same design but different color scheme.

Emmanuel Orenga, a lawyer for The Smiley Company, said they signed a settlement in 2011. "Terms are confidential but Walmart is authorized to use their logo for these new advertising campaigns," he said.

The name Walmart is known in every corner of society and can be found around the world. Yet, with humble beginnings as a simple variety store, what are the secrets that allowed it to grow into the massive corporation of today? And how did its logo evolution play a part in its eventual success?

The logo design was a symbol of professionalism for the company, adopting a blue color scheme and a sans-serif font. Despite its legibility, clarity, and cleanliness, this logo failed to convey Walmart's true nature at a time when the company was still developing its brand identity and name recognition.

In 1964, a new logo was introduced as the first step. The hyphenated name was incorporated into the rounded logo design. While it was a fairly unremarkable logo, it did a good job of conveying the brand's mission and the benefits customers could expect.

Over the course of those roughly twenty years, this logo was regularly featured on Walmart's printed materials and home decor. However, this Walmart logo was never installed on the side of a building.

The shapes became more square and had cleaner lines. Walmart was slowly removing the extra phrases surrounding the logo. It was intended that the newer-looking boxes would convey a more contemporary vibe, while the original distressed logo was meant to evoke a more traditional one.

Finally, they settled on this frontier-style logo. All through the 1970s, this logo for Walmart was used, sometimes in the bold black shown above and other times in a muted blue. This emblem was noticeably more country-style. Over the course of Walmart's branding experiments in those decades, it was a fan favorite.

The hyphen from earlier iterations was kept, and the design was completed in an all-caps style, albeit in a much cleaner sans-serif typeface, which was then given a bold emphasis. Brown made it possible for the brand to retain some of its earlier versions' rustic allure while also evolving into a much cleaner and more modern logo.

This new Walmart logo came at a time of transition for the company. They wanted to stop selling low-quality products and become a market leader through innovation and ethical business practices, so they switched to fair marketing.

Everything began with the typeface. A straightforward sans-serif typeface was used, as this is one of the most popular choices for logos. This typeface, with its straightforward, uncluttered lines, is not only universally adaptable but also exceptionally pleasant to the eye.

This new Walmart logo aimed to change the company's perception, moving away from budget goods and towards a more global audience. Walmart wanted to change its perception from being rough and rugged to being open and welcoming to everyone. With the company's incredible success, it is easy to say that they succeeded.

Changing your company's branding is essential if you want to give it a new image. Even if you rebrand, rebrand your marketing materials, and set new goals, keeping the same logo will make it difficult for people to perceive you in a new light.

The overall logo is versatile and workable on giant billboards to small product labels. The casual and friendly appearance will help customers to forget Walmart is a huge corporation while looking responsible and trustworthy.

The then-fledgling retailer decided to change things up two years later. The company created a new logo in black and added a hyphen. The logo was known as the "Font Frontier Logo" and was the first widely used logo for the brand, lasting from 1964 to 1981.

Finally, in 2008, Walmart dropped the hyphen and arrived at the blue logo it touts today. The logo includes a yellow "spark," which represents the spark of inspiration that led Sam Walton to create the first store, and each part of the spark is associated with one of the company's values and principles, according to the company.

Walmart unveiled a new logo for its membership platform, Walmart+, in April 2023. Per a company spokesperson, the new logo represents how "we never stop coming up with new ways to add more value and ways to save."

Walmart can surely justify a facelift and logo change for a number of standard business reasons as were outlined in the article. But have they honestly considered the timing of this large expenditure and the blatancy of this large expenditure during an economic downturn, and the message it sends? There is not a Walmart customer alive, I would venture to guess, who is not going to wonder why all that corporate dough could not have been allocated toward more price roll-backs rather than a cosmetic upgrade.

What matters for their value-driven consumer is what the Walmart logo stands for. The new logo creates a reference in time which requires Walmart to embrace an even heightened focus on their core values.
