Usnet is a service, a 2-way messaging network! Defintely not an "app" as 
we understand today!! Newsreaders, like Thunderbird, are surely "app"s.

Read the quoted paragraph again:

"Usenet, conceived by .... University, was the first open social media 
app, established in 1980."
